Live Shows / 10/22/2004: Park West - Chicago, IL

[review]

Park West is a smaller, intimate venue. You really wouldn't even know it was a music hall unless you were looking for it. Be prepared to pay AT LEAST $20 for parking though, since there isn't much street parking around, you'll have to hit one of the lots behind the building.

The good thing is that the artists just kind of have to park their busses and stuff on the side street, so if you can get out there quick right after the show you've got a better shot at meeting the artists.

I still remember me asking Danny "Do you think that is the bus?" and he was like "Nah" then like 2 minutes later Jesse and Mike rolled up in a cab and went on the bus, LOL.

Park West's Website, not much content here. LOL.

...oh, and discuss  :D

Other Musicians / Brooke Fraser
« on: September 07, 2004, 01:36:46 am »
Brooke Fraser has been mentioned in the Australian Singer/songwriters thread, but I felt she deserved her own thread, too  :D.

Brooke is a 20 year old singer/songwriter from New Zealand who's debut album What To Do With Daylight released in New Zealand on January 12, 2004. She wrote all 11 songs on the album and played either guitar (which she self-taught at 16) or piano (which she started at age 7) on each song.

I found out about her music through a friend on LJ who sent me "Indelible" and I loved it. My favorite songs are "Indelible" (slower acoustic guitar/some piano), "Lifeline" (acoustic guitar/drums mostly), "Arithmetic" (piano) and "Scarlet" (piano).

The music is totally awesome. I definitely recommend checking it out!  :D

Another Atlanta crunk-rap group. I've always found them entertaining if nothing else. Not the best rappers in the world, but they are funny, and usually have good beats.

Current single out is "What's Happnin'" with Trick Daddy, older songs: "Salt Shaker", "Naggin'", "Say I Yi Yi", and what they are probably most known for, they were on "Get Low" with Lil' Jon.

That is all  :D.

You've got to be kidding me. One of the best rappers ever does not have a thread in here? Come on now. I should have noticed this by now and rectified it, but since I didn't, here we go.

I was watching that 22 Greatest MC's thing MTV2 did last year since they were showing it this weekend, and B.I.G. was #2. I still think he is better than Tupac, but that is just my own opinion. Anyway, Biggie was awesome. R.I.P. Christopher Wallace, we miss you.

Other Musicians / Three 6 Mafia
« on: July 26, 2004, 11:54:35 am »
I've liked Three 6 Mafia for about 5 years now. T6M is a rap group from Memphis, Tennessee comprised of Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca, Juicy "J," and DJ Paul. Their style of rap can be summed up as violent club rap, kind of. MTV describes their topics as "vividly rapping about drug use, violent aggression, pornographic sex, and anything else remotely evil.".

Basically, to me it is music you can listen to if you are mad or just want to be kind of silly. They had a hit song in "Ridin' Spinners" featuring Lil' Flip last year. They also had a song, "Sippin' On Some Syrup," which was pretty popular back in like 1997. I find them to be pretty entertaining. I'm sure some people would be offended, but you can't take everything they say seriously, you really can't.

Other Musicians / Blue Background
« on: July 13, 2004, 10:30:23 pm »

Blue Background is a female-fronted semi-local group (they were from Indiana, but they moved up here and pretty much operate all of their shows, etc. in this region) I heard of because I used to work in the same mall with their bass guitarist, and he saw me at the Michelle Branch show last year, and decided to pimp his band to me the next time he saw me.

Their music can be classified as pop, but I think it is pretty good. Pretty much every track from the 2004 EP, Are You Listening, is really good. I think overall they are better live than on CD (which is impressive), and I think you should check them out!

Other Musicians / Big Tymers

Big Tymers is a state of mind... If you gonna do something, do it big time. - Mannie Fresh

I am actually suprised that I never made a thread about the Big Tymers at one point or another, lol. In the heyday of Cash Money records they, along with fellow New Orleans rapper Juvenile, were the main staples of Cash Money.

I always liked the Big Tymers, and while they may not be the best rappers and are pretty repetitive in their topic choice I always felt they had entertaining beats (thanks to Mannie Fresh) and were just generally entertaining. Their best album IMO was I Got That Work (2000), damn near every track on that CD was tight. Their recent CDs haven't been as impressive, but they've pumped out a few radio hits such as "Still Fly" from Hood Rich, "This Is How We Do," and "Gangsta Girl" from Big Money Heavyweight.

I really don't know when their next album will be coming out, but Baby just had his new shoe from Lugz come out in May. You can see Baby and Mannie in a lot of rap videos these days, too. They are notorious for making cameo appearances.

Other Musicians / Jadakiss

Jadakiss has a new single out--"Time's Up" featuring Nate Dogg--and his new album, Kiss of Death, is coming out on June 22nd. I have always thought Jadakiss was tight, no matter what track he is on, but have never bought one of his CDs. I definitely will pick this one up and see if he is the real deal. I like the single.

Other Musicians / Big Punisher

Some of you may know him by his two singles, "Still Not A Player" or "It's So Hard", and some of you may know him as the rapper who died of a heart attack at only 28 years old back in 2000.

I've been meaning to make this thread for a while, but I finally have gotten around to it. Back when Pun died I was really just coming back to rap, so I really did not listen to him or know much about his stuff. However, in the past year I worked with a guy who really loved Pun and his stuff, so I went and got a couple of the albums and his music and raps are really good. He has a really smooth flow and a nice delivery. His style was very versatile too.

The more I think about the whole situation with Pun, it is sad really. He was the first Latin solo rapper to go platinum in America at 26 and he died at 28 because he couldn't keep his weight in check. And it is also sad that there really isn't that much out there on the internet about him any more. I was trying to find more info to post, but there really isn't much. I did find one site though Big Pun Forever, a pretty decent tribute site.

Anyone else like/remember Pun?

Katie hit it up with the thread last year on the O-Board, now it is my turn. You know I don't forget anything ... usually, LOL.

Happy Birthday playa. Are you old enough yet so they will not go "that is an extra 247 dollas per day" to rent a car? LOL.

I hope you have a good day though. Hopefully they are not making you pull a HS on the B-Day.

:happybirthday:

Other Musicians / Kanye West
« on: January 26, 2004, 04:55:03 pm »
Kanye West is the newest member of Roc-A-Fella, he is a producer/rap artist. His song "Through The Wire" kept growing on me, and today he was on the local hip hop/R&B station for about an hour because he was in town this weekend for Twista's release party. He is actually a really interesting dude.

He says he wants to bring "the love back to hip hop" and wants to be associated with the likes of Andre 3000, Talib Kweli, etc. who are trying to be innovative and that in the game. I didn't know that he helped out with production of such songs as Jay-Z "H to the Izzo", Ludacris "Stand Up" and Alicia Keys "You Don't Know My Name". And of course he is also out there on the song with Twista and Jamie Foxx, "Slow Jamz", which will be on his CD College Dropout which comes out on Feb. 10th.

He seems like a pretty cool guy, just trying to do his thing and that. Not trying to be all ghetto and whatever, but just doing his thing. He has pretty good beats and samples too. I was thinking about buying his CD, but the odds of me buying it have increased tenfold by hearing him flow and talk about his stuff on the radio today, so I figured I'd make a thread for him here.

(WC, Ice Cube, Mack 10)

The super group of Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC finally have reunited after a seven-year hiatus with their new album, Terrorist Threats, which was released December 9th, 2003.

I always liked Ice Cube, just kind of shruged at Dub C and thought Mack 10 was ok, but together the three of them just kill it.

They say the reason they made this album was to bring the attitude that was missing back to hard-core hip-hop, as so many rappers today are just singing to get women and popularity (IE: turning rap into hip pop/R&B). Terrorist Threats has tight beats, crunk rapping, and a lot of fun being poked at the so-called soft rappers.

The first single from the CD is "Gangsta Nation", a song I absolutely love and bump as loud as I can every time I hear it on the radio or play the CD. As their bio on MTV.com describes it: "a thumping, Fred Wreck-produced song that pays tribute to the West Coast's standing as the premier gangster rap region. In between Nate Dogg's poignant chorus, Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC call out fake gangsters and explain that being “gangster” is more than it appears."

It seems to be getting some airplay on rap/top 40 stations, and they are actually playing it here on Kiss, which makes me giantly happy, even though I have the CD, LOL. Like they say, it ain't a hit 'til Nate Dogg spit, LOL.

Anyway, I just felt like making a thread because there wasn't one, lol.

Other Musicians / Twista
« on: January 20, 2004, 10:08:04 pm »
A friend of mine at work has been talking up and down about Twista for 2 years now, and while I knew who he was and some of the songs he was on, I really have not payed too much attention to him.

However, I really like the "Slow Jamz" song (*waits for Danny to show up and slap me for liking this song, lol*) he has out now with Jamie Foxx and Kanye West, which is going to be on his new CD, Kamikaze. which comes out next Tuesday (1/27).

For those who like rap, you might want to check out Twista. He raps fast, kind of like E-40, but he usually has a pretty good flow.
