General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / disappointed?
« on: October 24, 2007, 07:07:46 pm »
I just typed a really long reply but I got logged out   It saves you guys having to read my drivel I suppose  :) .
Shorter Version:

I was dissapointed at first but now that I've given certain songs a chance, I love H&T, it's easily as good as her first two albums.
A couple of the intros make the songs dificult to get into- for Come Undone the intro isn't badly suited it's just bad.

I diasgree with people saying the album is overproduced, every song is artfully crafted, there's a lot going on sometimes but every instrument/sound compliments every other.
My favourite song (of the album and of Nessa's) is Hands on Me, the live version is good but the album version is amazing, serious it gave me shivers. I was really suprised that others were not so keen it, I think it's perfect.

Other album highlights for me are: Fools Like Me, it's just so easy to listen to, the piano part at the end of Home (there aren't even words to describe it), the intro (first 5-10 seconds) to The One is really cool and Spring Street, not the best sounding song on the album, but the lyrics are very real (applies to the whole album really) and I think everyone can relate to them at least in part.

It's understandable that Vanessa is so pleased with H&T, it's practically flawless, easilly as good as Harmonium and BNN.
I can get why some are disappointed with it though, I don't think not liking an album disqualifies them as fans and if they've at least listened to the album they have as much right to criticise it as we have to praise it.
The best thing about Vanessa is that's she changing her style (same as she did with Harmonium) and writing what she feels, look at Tori Amos and Sarah Mclachlan, both great singer/ song writers; every album is different and unique b/c as they mature and experience different things their music reflects that. She's doing the same as them, a lot of people need to stop focusing so much on what she's done with the music in the past and appreciate what she's doing now, we already have one BNN we don't need a second.

edit: only real disapponitment for me was that All is Well wasn't on the album, it was my most anticipated track (almost cried when I saw the track list  ). Hopefully there's a studio version of it somewhere that we'll get to hear at some point  :D .

I didn't say it was the only way for a female artist to succeed but looking at singers like Nelly Furtado, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Christina Milian and countless others, I don't think it can be denied that in lieu of talent many 'muscians' rather succesfully use sexuality to get ahead. Amy Lee is obviously an exception to this, but I think even she was made to compromise during Fallen's production, which may be why Evanescence achieved such phenomenal success, don't get me wrong I am a huge Evanescence fan and think they deserve to do extremely well (due to the sheer amount of talent the band and especially Lee have) but I don't think they are necessarily so mainstream.

cool thanks for the tip, went back a few pages and found it :)
Any live versions of Annie, the wreckage or she floats? They're the only songs from harmonium of which I haven't heard live versions.

I was wondering, are there any audio files of the Private Radio piano-vocal version (I think it's the Australian show when she talks about late night bomb making :)), I love the alternate bridge.

She could include the bomb making thing :D

I think she'll stay as is. Even though she has continued to make songs to her established high standard, she's not in the right type of music to be as popular as she was, currently all that seems to be popular is mediocre  samey Indie, R&B, rap, Krunk (whatever the hell that is) and pretty much any 'artist' who's willing to strip down to their underwear, dispense with artistic integrity/individuality, dance suggestively and only sing songs with blunt sexual overtones. Unfortunately talented people like Vanessa just aren't being given the chance, but I'd rather her stay on track and continue to produce good songs rather than to be extremely popular at the expense of quality.  I think Aimee Mann is similarly less successful than she should be, but is still going strong in terms of her musical output (if anyone hasn't listened to her I seriously reccommend doing so).
Still, the music scene can, and hopefully will, change really quickly so who knows. Fingers crossed for the third album, and even if nobody else is listening to her I always will :D

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Harmonium and the winter

Yeah I totally agree though I think it has an autumn feel to it too or maybe like a progressive thing moving from the end of Summer  or beginning of Autumn with White Houses to a beginning of Spring/April showers feel with She Floats. lol reading back that doesn't really make much sense, but I know what I mean...that's something...right? :?

I didn't actually know until recently that Harmonium hadn't really sold well, and I was totally suprised tbh. I pre-ordered it on Amazon.com so I could get it when it first came out (the UK release date was quite a while later I think), and it was well worth the extra money (well ,my sister's extra money, it was released just before my Birthday so it didn't cost me lol). I thought the album was phenomonal, and equally as good if not better than BNN, which is pretty rare as many artists often produce pretty disappointing follow albums if their first was particularly good.
I can't believe it didn't sell more copies as it is so good, I think a lot of people probably don't know about it, especially outside of the US. Fortunately I checked her website a little before Harmonium's release, otherwise I don't think I would have even known about it.
Count yourselves lucky to have got one single, I don't even think White Houses was released in the UK lol

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Vanessa's Covers
« on: September 15, 2006, 06:23:43 pm »
Couldn't really think of any myself (maybe My Immortal?) but some of the suggestions on here are brilliant, I'd love to hear covers of Mad World and How Soon Is Now? (I can actually hear her singing this one, I know that sounds stupid but It would really suit her style). For a Tori Amos cover, I think a VC version of Bells For Her would be excellent :D

Are there any aol sessions for songs from BNN?
If there are, does anyone have them? I love piano-vocal versions of songs, often more than the originals. The song I'd really like is Rinse, I've been rediscovering BNN recently (hadn't listened to it for ages) and I still think this song is amazing, so would really love another version of it.
Thnx :D

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / nobody's mentioned....

I know the last post on this was months ago but I just found it lol. Hardest Vanessa song to play is probably, imo, Annie.
The second verse of Wanted took me ages to get, and I still screw it up most of the time :|
Papa is difficult too (lol maybe I'm just really bad), I'm okay it at now but I still usually play the ascending part after the verse twice for some reason and can't move up and down octaves quick enough
White Houses (not the song book version, I think the version she plays live is better) is quite easy to play and a lot of fun but hurts my wrists if I play it more than once  .

Other Musicians / Think we've both lost respect...
« on: September 06, 2006, 07:29:40 am »
Well when I heard Promiscouis and Maneater I think I lost all respect I ever had for her. Wasn't keen on Whoa Nelly, but even then I respected her for the fact that she had artistic integrity and wasn't going out of her way to be too commercial. Folklore is probably one of my favourite albums, the songs have soul and meaning, and again Nelly seemed to be being true to herself etc. And now we have Loose with lyrics like "I wanna see you on your knees, knees, you either want to be with me or be me" :?
What the hell happened Nelly!?  :?:  She's gone from making unique meaningful songs to dealing out run of the mill (mediocre even) pop/krunk drivel, which is weak both lyrically and musically. I downloaded a few songs (payed for them, now I want my money back lol)  to see what the album was like (say it right is okay but still pretty poor), Te Busque sounds like a bad eurovision entry (trust me, that's an extremely bad thing).
Seems to me Nelly has sold out, and I'm really pretty disappointed because of how good she was. I wonder if sacrificing her musical integrity/individuality will really be worth the extra air time and few extra dollars (as far as I can tell Loose isn't doing that well, maybe not even as well as Folklore, at least in the UK).
