General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Re: New Album- Euphoria?!

Mastering is the final step in making an album.  You really do need a running order to do it properly.  The goal is to make the songs hang together sonically in a uniform way, that no songs are too loud or too soft.  You add the last bits of EQ and/or compression, determine the length of the gaps in between songs, etc.  All Stevie would need to do the running order is copies of the final mixes.

It's not that you cannot mess with a running order after mastering, but there may need to be some minor tweaks if you switch songs around.

However, upon waking up the next morning in the hospital, and as my doctor was explaining to me what happened the night before, my fiancé showed up.

...well then....
congrats on the engagement!

So she is going to be a bride?   :)

I have met my share of people, and generally, I find that if you speak to them in a down-to-earth manner, that's your best bet.  But, there is simply no way to predict what kind of mood someone will be in when they get offstage.  Maybe they felt like the show sucked. Maybe their monitor mix was crappy.  Maybe they just got in a fight with a girlfriend/boyfriend. Maybe they just don't want to talk.  None of this should matter, but it does.

I talked to Ari about his guitars and amps, and he seemed to warm up to that.  I don't think I asked him a single VC question.

Skye is always approachable and pleasant.  I was able to suggest a good place to get some records pressed, and he ended up using them.

It doesn't matter where the players rank in the bigger scheme of things, either.  Last year, I had dinner with a renowned session guitar player who is on millions of records and worked with, among others, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, Aretha Frankin and Billy Joel.  What broke the ice?  When I asked him if he liked the movie "Pulp Fiction".  Go figure.

I work with musicians (mostly guys) all the time for various reasons, and it's like having a bunch of girlfriends......but no sex.  They can be weird, high maintenance, uncompromising, remote, dismissive, self-obsessed.....urghhhh.

It's hard not to take a diss personally, but it really could have been a misunderstanding.

sorry to ask, but what do you work with? just curious, cause it sounded fun! haha

My day job is in TV; the rest of the time, I play music for fun, and to make some extra bucks.  When I am playing for people, it's fun.  Dealing with band members, club owners, studio engineers, and other musicians?  Not always! :)

Is it just me or is Ari like a huge asshole?………………I met him and he was kind of a huge asshole.

Met him after a Joe's Pub show once.  Seemed fine to me.

Good review!

House of Seven Swords is my favorite.

Every time I hear a great new VC song, my brain goes "AH! THAT is why I listen to this girl."

I liked seeing Ari, but:
A) He seemed bored, swaying to and fro with his Strat;
B) I think he changed the F to an Fmaj7, possibly because of "A"
C) I wasn't crazy about the twangy sound he did have.

I feel like he just stopped by for that song and then left.  Maybe he left his car running outside, ha ha.

What a great show!  I had a great time seeing everyone, a real soul recharge.  A few new songs, quick word or two with VC, who was in great mood and voice, couldn't ask for anything more!

Thanks!  Just ordered my ticket!

How do you register to get tickets?  It's been ages since I went to VC.com.

Looks like the Highline Ballroom is already sold out.

STILL no full band.

It's the usual VC ticket clusterfuk.

Hope she adds a Joe's Pub or a Terminal 5, and gives me more than a nanosecond to buy tickets.

Is that asking too much?

Do we know if the album is being recorded to tape yet? I would much prefer it not to be :-\

No idea as of yet.  Why do you ask?

My guess is no.

ATM was absolutely a blessing.  It came on the tail end of when you could even have a hit with a simple pop song.  To me, pop is nearly unlistenable now, and what's more I think that ATM might not be a hit today.  ATM is probably not her best overall song, but I still think it's her best pop song.

ATM/BNN got her foot in the door.  It made these other things possible.  Some demos are magic, but lack the polish of a well-produced album that would sell well.

Listened to BNN the other day and really enjoyed it.  Some tracks aged better than others, but I'm proud to be an old school Nessaholic.
