FAQ / Board Issues / Re: The official maintenance thread =)

Power supply death this morning.  Took a bit to find a replacement, and wound up jury-rigging a standard power supply into the 2U case.  It ain't pretty, but it'll work.

All should be good from here on.

I'm sure there's a modification for SMF to do things like "I'm listening to..." but we're holding off on major mods as SMF2's getting closer to release.

Ok, we've gone to SMF.  The mass of spam signups has necessitated doing something beyond phpBB2.  A bunch of modifications aren't in place, and we're considering going to SMF2 from here, but haven't finalized that as of yet.  Until then, it'll be a bit lean on the mods, but will work for now.

FAQ / Board Issues / The official maintenance thread =)

The server will be down from about 3-5am PDT 8/16/08.

I'm doing what is effectively a clean install of FreeBSD 7.0 on new mirrored 1TB drives.  I've built it on another box I have, and will be copying over user data only to the new drives and then installing those.  Makes for a good excuse to clear out the old crud.  The existing 300GB mirrors have been in continuous service for more than 3 years, so it's time to swap 'em out.

Just install a CAPTCHA image verification plugin, and boom, spam is gone :D

Not really.  Spammers have been breaking the more common ones.  GMail and Yahoo's have been broken, for example.

FAQ / Board Issues / Forum emails, and you!
« on: August 30, 2007, 07:23:00 am »
This post was spawned by me getting a bunch of scomp@aol.com "TOS Violation" notices from someone reporting watch notices as spam on AOL.  Enough of those, and noone on AOL will get messages from here.  :(

FAQ / Board Issues / Forum emails, and you!
« on: August 28, 2007, 05:24:29 pm »
Periodically, the forum will send you email, under certain specific conditions.  These are not spams.

    New Private Messages
New replys to a topic you've got watched
Very rare administrative email alerts sent to everyone

Please do not report messages from the forum as spam.  Reporting them as such makes my life difficult as now I have to deal with your ISP to get the board unblocked, so the other people on your ISP who are on the board and would like to get them, can.

Each message from the forum will contain a link to disable that topic watch, or a link to the PM causing it.

If you with to not receive these messages, just click up at Profile (above) and choose 'No' to the following two choices: "Always notify me of replies:" and "Notify on new Private Message:".  You can still get topic notifications on a per-topic basis by checking a box when replying with this option off.

Thank you.

FAQ / Board Issues / Switch to SMF from phpBB
« on: July 21, 2007, 02:11:13 pm »
The default SMF theme is something akin to subSilver (this one) is to phpBB.  With SMF we can generally put in additional themes easily, and not have to worry about also ensuring board modifications work with them, just due to the way things are with SMF.  I expect Katia and the rest will grab a bunch of the liked ones and make them available to those who want to use 'em.

See above.

Doing the first significant upgrades to the server in a year and a half.  The user-visible issues should be done.
