Unbelievably amazing show tonight by Mrs. Carlton. This is my 7th time seeing her live, and I believe this was her best performance yet. She really performed tonight and got into the music in a way I hadn't seen from her before. Her singing has not sounded better. I was surprised when she said that this was the last tour they would be doing in this kind of intimate setting, and that next time she would he back with a full band. Of course I was also elated to hear that. I believe she said that right after or before she played her new song, "love is an art", and it made me wonder if she might already be anticipating bigger commercial success for her next album. She certainly seems to be at the top of her game and, given the great critical reception of Liberman, it might be safe to assume her star is on the rise again. Regardless, it's good to know there's more to come from this amazing talent.

I don't remember every song she played but a rough setlist:

Thousand miles
Carousel
Who's to Say
White Houses
Fairweather Friend
Take It Easy
Operator
Blue Pool
Nothing Where Something Used to Be
Love is an Art
The Marching Line
I don't want to be a bride
Duet with the opener and I'm kicking myself for not remembering her name because she was super talented.... they sang some song about mustangs and Porsches that sounded like a song I should have heard before (but haven't)...

Anyway it was a great show, great energy, great experience

She put on a great show with Skye at a classic venue just south of Denver... I got a few recordings of the new stuff that I'll post later. She did a rendition of "Get Good" with a new instrument she called a "dream machine", which was a gift from Ari Ingber. I got a recording of that, too. She sang two songs with her new fiance (although I think she said she's already legally married? I dunno.. I'll have to listen to the recording again). One of those songs, "In Our Time," is off his band's new album, "Negativity," and also features Vanessa! Is this news to ya'll? I had no idea! (I guess I need to check the boards more often...).

Setlist:
Carousel
Tall Tales for Spring
House of Seven Swords
Take it Easy
Willows
White Houses
A Matter of Time (with John McCauley)
In Our Time (with John McCauley)
Get Good
Unlock the Lock
I Don't Want To Be A Bride
Marching Line
--encore--
A Thousand Miles

This was the opening act for V's June 20th show at the Housing Works Bookstore.

According to V, they are personal friends and she said their music was very, quote, "musical."

I definitely agree.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Nolita
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:50:25 pm »
I stumbled upon this...

Little Italy/Nolita

Quote
Visitors will find family-style trattorias, specialty food stores, and pastry shops touting scrumptious cannolis that transport you back to Italy. Though you won’t find many Italian-Americans living here, special events such as the Feast of San Genarro, held every September, bring them back to the neighborhood. While its name implies otherwise, Nolita lies within Little Italy. Fashion boutiques, independent labels, and chic bars and restaurants dot Mott and Mulberry Streets, making the area a popular destination, and a less crowded alternative to SoHo.

Introduce Yourself / I guess I'm old and new?
« on: March 31, 2009, 12:57:15 pm »
Sup, bitches!

It's your boy, Tim.. back from the d3ad.

I go through my phases where I'm on this site all the time, and then I'm off, then I'm on.. (ala Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold").

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi. I've immersed myself in the depths of Harmonium AGAIN. It's my favorite addiction. I thought I'd be sick of it by now. But no. My favorite song off that album was initially White Houses, and then Papa, and then The Wreckage, and then Private Radio, and now it's Who's to Say.

I mean.... wtf. "Who's to Say" is just incredible. Why was it not a single? Ugh. Stupid, nonmusical bastards.

Creative Endeavors / The Next One
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:27:52 am »
Finally... a new song. Went thru a bit of a dry spell there, but I'm really loving this tune. This song came to be after I had a conversation with a coworker about relationships and how easy it is to "settle." There are those guys and girls in our lives who give us butterflies the instant we see them or start talking to them. Why settle for anything less than butterflies?

The Next One

You say
Over coffee
That I'm too damn
Idealistic
I say
It's too early
Would you please be
Sympathetic

Then you tell me
This is another way
That I'm running from my problems
Oh but honey, don't you see?
I'm just running to the next one.

The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one

You call
Me a quitter
And you call me
Condescending
I'm calling
You bitter
And i'm calling
Out the ending

Then you tell me
This is another way
That I'm running from my problems
Oh but honey, don't you see?
I'm just running to the next one.

The next one.
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one

I want butterflies
Where are butterflies?
I want butterflies
And I want candlelight
And I want peace of mind tomorrow
Is that too much to ask?
Baby, I'm free
Baby, I'm free
Baby, I'm free
To believe in..

The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one
The next one....

No I wont
I wont let
Wont let my
My dreams get
Me down no
I wont' let
Wont let my
My dreams get
Me down.

Creative Endeavors / Star Spangled Banner
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:36:40 pm »
Damn I really like this song, but I was singing it to a friend and he just started laughing! I think he was just being an asshole... but it got me wondering :/ It's not really finished yet

Star Spangled Banner

I will capture the stars tonight
They're mine.
Rocketing up in the dark, alright
I'm fine.

The Star Spangled Banner waves goodbye to me
Goodbye to me
I'm floating away from all the irony
Where nothing means a thing

Do you see the magic?
Even if the moment's tragic
Shed a tear for real love
Yea let it live and lift it up

The Star Spangled Banner waves goodbye to you
Goodbye to you
Rising up above with the love you knew
And nothing else is true

THE END lol

Actually, I still need to add a bridge. But I'm just curious as to any thoughts. Be honest!

Creative Endeavors / When in War
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:40:05 am »

EDIT: Thanks for the positive feedback! But I got bored again at work yesterday and changed the lyrics up a bit. I'm actually really pleased with them now! ...  but watch, now you'll all think they suck! haha ... Oh and I actually recorded my voice to these lyrics last night (I had to be quiet so I wouldn't wake anybody up). Thought it'd be cool if you had an idea what the melody sounded like, and how that might affect your opinion of the song. Thanks for the input, everybody!

When in war
It's hard to be myself
When red is bled
Bombs white the night
But blue is all I've felt
The city
Is sleeping
Then the rain disrupts our spell

Where do our dreams go?
You're crying from my window
See me running down that street
One more mile, I'll be free,
Or so I keep telling me
Why do we leave our dreams behind?
We're all out of our minds.

Yea, so I was just bored at work again, writing a melody. Was in a pretty good mood, but a really morose song came to me. All I have is the first verse and chorus, cuz I don't think it's worth developing into a whole song. But tell me what you think!

When in war
It's hard to be myself
It's hard to be
Just who I am
When everybody else
Is cryin
And dyin
We're tipping off the shelf

Where'd the beauty go?
You're crying from my window.
Watch me run this street.
One more corner, I'll be free,
Or so I keep telling me.
Why do we leave our worlds behind?
We're all out of our minds.

Creative Endeavors / Recipe for Love
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:42:28 pm »
Hey, here's a song I started. I just write songs at my job cuz it's really boring and there's nothing else to do.

It's not nice,
That way you love me baby
Scratch that spice
And spoon some sugar, maybe

You'll see
The recipe for love is easy
Cuz sugar is all you need

Whisper sweet nothings,
"I want you"
Then make me think
I don't deserve you

You'll see
The recipe for love is easy
Cuz sugar is all you need

[Chorus]
Cup 'o chocolate
For the Cupid sedation
And a coconut
For that silly sensation
But the sugar's enough
To give you all of my stuff
You see, it's really so easy to make love

It's not nice,
That way you leave me, boo
But it's enticing
Not believing you

You wish
That I could just dish it out
Delicious something to smile about

Whisper sweet something,
"I want you"
Would it be wrong
If I deserved you?

I wish
That I could just dish it out
Delicious something to smile about

Chocolate for the cupid sedation
Coconut for the silly sensation
But the sugar's enough
To give you all of my stuff
You see it's really so easy to make love

Creative Endeavors / My First TATOO Idea!

Creative Endeavors / Some lyrics I started...
« on: December 25, 2007, 09:27:17 pm »
He so I was wondering if this is any good... no title yet. The first segment is a rap. The second verse starts the singing...

This.Hurts.So.Much
I can't control myself
I need to scream
I want to yell
And if I fall before I fly,
So be it, cuz I'd rather die
Than live a life I've never learned
I need to sting
I want to burn
But I'm sick of all this street-smart shit
I need a text book right here quick
So from the top now,
Chapter One,
I'll see if I can't learn my love

Maybe the answer's in the pages
Passed down to me through all the ages
I need to skip to Chapter Twenty-two
It's time that I learn something new and

All I want's the love, I'll learn
And all I need's a light to burn
And I'm free --
To turn it off
And I'm free to turn it back on

So I'll close this book I've opened and
Chalk it up to my emotions and
Play the part of me that only reason sees
Now show myself some decency

All I want's the love, I'll learn
And all I need's a light to burn
And I'm free --
To turn it off
And I'm free to turn it back on

Completely Off-Topic / SO I had this dream about vanessa....
« on: July 28, 2007, 12:55:39 pm »
okay so I just had this dream before I woke up this morning. I can't really remember the details, but I must have been at a Vanessa Carlton show or something. So after the show she was signing autographs and it was now my turn... so she signs and then I ask her for a hug and tell her how amazing she is (lol) but while I'm giving her a hug I notice she smells disgusting. I instantly realize vanessa could never smell so bad. I push her off me and shout, YOU'RE NOT THE REAL VANESSA! And then I grab her and take off her mask and guess who it is??? Michelle Branch!!!!

I thought it was pretty funny. This is how I woke up today

Creative Endeavors / Romance as a Creative Endeavor??
« on: June 22, 2007, 06:16:15 am »
I have a pretty good guard up whenever I meet someone new. I rarely date because I feel like I can read people too well, even tho I'm really just jumping to safe conclusions. But I've been seeing this guy now for like 3 weeks and each time I see him I like him even more, which is rare. I loved our date so much last night.. I was strangely inspired to write a poem.

I'm not quite sure why I'm sharing this...Just curious what random thoughts you all might have on dating or what not.

Sometimes,
When I think of you,
It seems I don't know how.
No melody to follow
As the jazz fills my heart,
Leading my yearning soul
To the wonder of the next beat.

Creative Endeavors / Double Iced Cappuccino
« on: May 25, 2007, 04:08:29 pm »
Yea so I went to the local coffee shop and was supposed to be studying for finals, but got a weird burst of inspiration haha I don't really write poetry anymore and this is kinda emo I guess but whatever here it is... if you're bored, try it out and let me know what you think   :)

Double Iced Cappuccino I

The white cloud floats down to my lips
As I drink it all away
I wonder what it means
Why it's taken me this long
To finally drain a glass half-full
I wonder if I already know
And wont admit it
But wait, there are no answers
So why do I keep asking --
Why do I keep insisting
On a moment of truth?
There must be some sort of definition.
I erase my thoughts
And open a dictionary
This is what I do when I'm afraid.

Double Iced Cappuccino II

This is a moment I am missing
The cloud floats down
-- I am there --
It feels funny, like cold cotton balls, or something
The coffee slips through like rain
And I am dancing
This glass will never drain
Coffee: verb: to enjoy; Also: to forget.
