One of my favorites... lead singer's voice similar to the lead singer of Switchfoot... but I think they are better. The single kicks ass...

Carlton strongly displays her broad musical palette
Wall-to-wall crowd packs small venue

SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER

"This is going to be one of those real sweaty evenings," Vanessa Carlton apologized to the wall-to-wall audience shoe-horned onto the Crocodile Cafe for Saturday night's concert.

        MUSIC REVIEW

VANESSA CARLTON

WHEN: Saturday night

WHERE: Crocodile Cafe

Among the disadvantages of such a popular artist playing an intimate venue was that the air inside was as scarce as tickets on the street. The second-to-last show of her current tour was taped by Rollingstone.com for an Internet broadcast for its "Original Concert" series.

Looking like a prom queen in her strapless gown, Carlton played all but two selections from her newly released "Harmonium" as well as five songs from her 2002 debut "Be Not Nobody."

Performing solo on a baby grand piano, the new songs came across much stronger than the overproduced recorded versions.

She opened with "Plastic Love" and "San Francisco," commenting on how much she loved the crowd's quiet attentiveness. Although frequently compared to young female rockers such as Michelle Branch, Carlton displays a broader musical palette and is reverenced more like a Tori Amos.

Her voice, blending baby-doll innocence with a mature self-assurance, was deftly supported by a classically powered piano style. After a masterful retooling of the early hit "Ordinary Day," she dedicated "Who's to Say," one of the best tunes from her new album, to "everyone who is in a relationship that may not be approved by their family or government."

"I am second only to Marilyn Manson in terms of ruffling feathers," she said in introduction to "White Houses," the first single from "Harmonium," which has been banned by MTV for its racy lyrics.

Although the overall impression of the song was somewhat decadent, there was nothing remotely offensive in the lyrics.

In addition to the songs from "Be Not Nobody" and "Harmonium," she performed the B-side "Swindler" and a track that didn't make the new album, "Morning Sting."

Toward the end of the show, Carlton had a bit of an accident with "Wreckage," the secret track on "Harmonium," which she stopped midsong because, having forgotten the words, she realized she was singing in a made-up language.

She recovered with the megahit "A Thousand Miles" and encored with a haunting "Twilight."

Sorry if it has been posted already

Crashed on the floor when I moved in
This little bunk alone with some strange new friends
Stay up too late, and I'm too thin
We promise each other it's til the end
Now we're spinning empty bottles
It's the five of us
With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust
I can't resist the day
No, I can't resist the day

Jenny screams out and it's no pose
'Cause when she dances she goes and goes
Beer through the nose on an inside joke
I'm so excited, I haven't spoken
And she's so pretty, and she's so sure
Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her
The summer's all in bloom
The summer is ending soon

It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses

Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at the things he said
And he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love and we all got hurt
I sneak into his car's black leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat
Boy, we're going way too fast
It's all too sweet to last

It's alright
And I put myself in his hands
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses
Love, or something ignites in my veins
And I pray it never fades in white houses

My first time, hard to explain
Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain
On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think
He's my first mistake

Maybe you were all faster than me
We gave eachother up so easily
These silly little wounds will never mend
I feel so far from where I've been
So I go, and I will not be back here again
I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses
I lie, put my injuries all in the dust
In my heart is the five of us
In white houses

And you, maybe you'll remember me
What I gave is yours to keep
In white houses
In white houses
In white houses

Sorry if this was posted already

From the new US Weekly in a box that is titled "O.C. Stars moving in" at the bottom it says:

"Meanwhile Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins, 40, is leaving San Francisco - where he has lived for several years (even when he dated Charlize Theron) - for Los Angeles.  He and his current girlfriend Vanessa Carlton, 23, recently toured a $2.2 million Hollywood Hills home that is up for sale by owner Rosie O'Donnell's business partner Dan MacDonald."

The article implies they are moving in together, as a photo of them as a caption "Also moving: Jenkins and girlfriend Carlton" but who knows. If they are, that's so cute :)

Check out 18-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist Katie Trotta.  Katie and I grew up in the same town and only recently discovered each other.  I'm going to be helping her out and I think she has a TON of potential.  Her music could be compared to Carlton/Apple/Jones.  Check out "The Good Girl."

If you want her album let me know and I'll send you details on getting one and I think it should be available online soon (speaking w/ her about this tomorrow)

Vanessa was interviewed briefly on Entertainment Tonight last night (6/17) about the new issue of InStyle which has a feature on younger singer/songwriters with their older idols (Michelle Branch w/ Stevie Nicks, etc).  Vanessa's photo is with Carole King.  They were both at the piano together and Vanessa said they might possibly collaborate in the future.

Check her out on MTV tonight -- on the show Advanced Warning

www.darcieminerband.com

She and I recorded our albums in the same studio w/ the same musicians. She is amazing and I love her songs. Unfortunately her full-length hasn't been released yet (and I used to have a copy but lost it, damnit) due to label issues, but she'll probably be signed to a new label soon.

I have been told I sound like this chick, so I've been listening to more and more of their songs and they are so good. I've liked "Stranded" for a long time, but right now I have listened to their song "Damaged" like 50 times.

Go to: www.plumbinfo.com

:)

Download from Kazaa or whatever: Damaged, Stranded, Here With Me, Real, and any others you can find.

Enjoy!

Shameless? Yes. This is a post promoting my own music...

The reason is because I recently took a huge step and quit my day job and moved to a new city and began a tour of the US.  I stopped listening to my head and listened to my heart, all in the name of music.  However, my bills are slowly mounting and I could really use some support.

I have put my album onsale at CD Baby for April.  It's $10 + shipping if you buy it through them.

Or you can look at www.jessicaweiser.com in the store and either send $11 via pay pal (to jessica@jessicaweiser.com) for After Silence or $25 for all 3 of my albums.  And I'll include some stickers and postcards and if you whine enough I'll send you a poster too.

I would REALLY appreciate it. The album is a mix of piano/guitar/etc songs backed by an extremely good band... I am really proud of this album and it is a bit heavier/deeper than what you hear on the radio, but the tunes grow on you and are pretty to listen to :)

Thanks so much for your support!!! :)
