General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Spring Street as Third Single
« on: March 31, 2008, 12:23:26 pm »
Spring Street is now being played at RiteAid, on various promo sites, and to top it all off, it's the default song that plays on Vanessa's website. It's looking like it's gonna be the third single.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Oh, Vanessa
« on: March 26, 2008, 05:27:02 pm »
Okay. I've been with Vanessa from the beginning; I heard "A Thousand Miles" when I was in the 5th grade, and immediately went out to buy the CD. That was the first CD I'd ever bought, and I still listen to it. It was a huge hit - all three singles did well on TV and radio, and I expected the same from Vanessa's next album. Then Harmonium came out, and it was unsuccessful for the standards of a major label. One could pass this off as a sophomore slump, or something of the sort. Unfortunately, it's become a foreshadowing to the success of "Heroes and Thieves". Vanessa's newest and third album has sold the least out of all three of her albums, despite a better record label, better promotion, and two singles. (Although, I feel like Nolita Fairytale was a reasonable success, but that's another matter altogether).

What I'm trying to get at is this: not to be a pessimist, but I do not see Vanessa ever breaking into the mainstream again. I don't see her ever having the sales she once did again. And I think, in the back of our minds, we've all known this, but didn't want to accept it. What I really think we should do is just that - accept that Vanessa will never be commercially successful again, and instead focus on the more important things.

Vanessa has managed to remain in full creative control so far throughout her career. For an artist with several top 10 hits under her belt, this is astounding, indeed. Why don't we all just stop worrying about sales and mainstream acceptance? Why don't we focus on the important things? We need to look at this positively. With less sales, Vanessa can maintain creative control throughout the entire extent of her career. She can have a successful career on an independent record label, which would, in turn, free her to be even more experimental and (dare I say) avant garde with her music. She could do what she wants, and what her fans want, instead of succumbing to the control that most major labels wish to enforce - I guarantee that if she can't make a hit doing something she wants on a major label, then she'll be forced to pull a Nelly Furtado or something like that to stay relevant.

Why should we try to save Vanessa's mainstream career when it is obviously not going to ever return to what it once was, when she could have a successful and prosperous career as an independent artist?

Discuss.

Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / Dancer in the Dark
« on: February 26, 2008, 06:52:43 pm »
I just saw this movie the other day. It's simultaneously one of the most depressing and one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Bjork's performance is beyond perfection.

Other Musicians / Grammy Nominations are out...
« on: December 06, 2007, 07:31:56 pm »
I think it's extremely likely that Amy Winehouse will sweep the awards - she's nominated in all of the major categories, for 6 grammys, and I think it's likely she'll win all of them, if at least not 4 of them.

As much as I'd like her to do well, Feist probably won't win any. She does have a chance for short-form video though.

Gwen Stefani will win for Best Vocal Collaboration. Any predictions?

What is wrong with America? We are obsessed with celebrities and the entertainment industry, and when Oprah "collapses" while trying out a new diet (which with the tabloids and all, I doubt actually ever happened) the news medium has a fucking FIELD DAY, but as for, oh, ten or so school shootings in less than a month, we don't hear anybody asking why that's happening. Any comments?

This post was mostly to see how many people will actually respond, because this forum needs to be brought back from the dead. If that happens, it'll be the second time...pathetic, really.

Other Musicians / Now It's Overhead
« on: August 18, 2006, 04:27:03 pm »
Andy LeMaster, Maria Taylor, Clay Leverett, Orenda Fink.

They're great. They have a new album coming out, it's called "Dark Light Daybreak".

"Now It’s Overhead has more than once evoked the term “dreamy.” Dark Light Daybreakis not exactly an exception – it’s awash in the band’s sig- nature moody layers and wall of guitar. But if the previous two records were dream-like, Dark Light Daybreak is more akin to waking up. The range of Clay Leverett’s drumming and the variations of Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink’s vocals shine through, adding to each song the expertise of musicians who stand back, listen, then bring exactly what needs to be there. Dark Light Daybreak runs the songwriting gamut, leaving not a moment to be missed."

Here's some downloads from the new album:
 - Walls
 - Let Up

The album comes out the 12th of September, but if you pre-order it, it should arrive by the 29th of August.

Completely Off-Topic / Celebrities Who Should be Models
« on: August 03, 2006, 01:08:33 pm »
I've been thinking about this for awhile. There are a lot of celebs who'd be really great models. Nelly Furtado; she's beautiful in 'Promiscous'. Christina Aguliera. Shannon Thomas. :D. Anyone else you can think of?

Other Musicians / Peaches
« on: August 01, 2006, 06:15:56 pm »
Possibly the most disturbing but good artist I've ever heard. She's...very interesting. Read this:

"Peaches (Merrill Nisker) burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of c**k-sure rapping and spurting groovebox beats. Indeed, this vulgar Canadian temptress may have come from an underground womb of acoustic folk (Mermaid Café), avant jazz (Fancypants Hoodlum), and deconstructed noise swarms (the Shit), but it wasn't until 2000's new guise that her fearless, apolitical gender-play truly raised heads. European trawls unearthed new admirers, and collaborations with the equally lewd Chilly Gonzales certainly fueled the fire for her first solo effort. By the time she signed onto Berlin's Kitty-Yo label and unleashed The Teaches of Peaches, her niche had already been carved out. Peaches simultaneously sounded like a Penthouse Forum and Grandmaster Flash, Shirley Manson, and Charles Manson -- or just Justine Frischmann hitting her sexual peak. Peaches moved to XL, which reissued The Teaches of Peaches in 2002, and released Fatherf**ker in 2003 and Impeach My Bush in 2006. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide"

She's a very interesting persona...here's some of the names of her songs...
 - F**k the Pain Away
 - Sex (I'm A)
 - Sucker
 - Tent in Your Pants

Yeah...

Completely Off-Topic / Samplers and Mixing Programs and such...
« on: July 07, 2006, 11:12:24 am »
OK.

For my recording/mixing programm-y thingy I use Audacity. I used to use WavePad but then it decided all new users have to pay for it and I switched computers and such.

I need a good quality (free!!!! unless you're willing to email me an illegal copy of something) recording program with a sampler (or tone generator as Audacity calls it). I'd like the sampler to have a lot of different tones; the one on mine only had two and they were both irritating buzzy noises.

Creative Endeavors / And More of Them:
« on: July 03, 2006, 07:28:26 am »
Here's some more of my writing from the second book. I finished it two days ago. That made me happy. Anyway:

This one is very out-of-style for me, I usually don't write like this. I wanted to sound like Conor Oberst, I guess. It's called "Willing to Die Happy"

Willing to Die Happy
This is the last year until sorrow
Hits the window like water
And it floods over everything
And anything it can swallow
It’s a mask you have made
But there is no air hole
And you thought you melted the ice
But now you’re choking on snow
And it melts in your mouth
But is it any good? Because
It’s already found the reason it could
Become solid again,
Unlike your relationship,
You twist and you bend,
And you will never condemn
All the things that you did
To the past where they belong
Not reality, but a memory
And it writes, writes so long
Not an essay, but a story
That goes on and on
And you can’t find the ending
Cause the story is of your life
And it makes it worth living
Just to make the mistakes
That you’ve already made
Over and over again
Just to make it all real
You find you haven’t healed
You are still confined to the bed
Where you have lain for years
And you think you’re diseased
That you cannot get up
But you can do anything
If you want it enough
So you get out of that bed
You push the sheets to the side
And you stand and you walk
Your eyes swelling with pride
And you cry, and you cry
Because this is all real
And you have made this work out
Now you consider yourself real
Cause you are worth something
To someone other than me
Cause you are worth something
To everybody
And you love, and you love
Because this is what happens
When you want something so much
That you are willing to die
But die happy

Here's another...It's called "Leave it Behind" and to me it's sort of "New Resolution" by Azure Ray - esque. That was a mouthful. Here it is:

Leave it Behind
You write and you write
Now the plot is thickening
It grows and it grows
And you can’t help listening
To the song that it sings
That you love to hear played
The loveliness that you thought of
Is fading

Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind
Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind

You live and you love
And you make your friendships
They grow and they grow
And they might get you through this
Pain that you feel
That is making its mark
On your body and your soul
It’s fading

Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind
Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind

You are falling
You can’t get up
I reach down to help you
You refused my hand

Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind
Can’t you see all of the things
That you can’t leave behind

You write and you write
And you near the ending
You sing and you sing
And you stop breathing but you
Go on and on
And finish your task
You go on and on and on

That's it for now. I'll be sure to mention the Nessaholics forum in the dedication page =D
