Creative Endeavors / Five Are Few
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:42:36 am »
Five are few
My skies are blue
The days I spent with you
Five are few
The streets are new
The places I walked through

Home at night to where you are
Suddenly, I see
That perfect, sunny, rosy skies
Are always cloudy in your eyes

There's always a change
From what you say
To what your fingers do
And touch me in a simple way
That sends your words askew
If I could arrange
For you to say
The words that are your truth
And come to light
And carry through
We'd finally make this right

Five are few
Your words renew
The troubles we talked through
Five are few
And I re-captured you
Your scabs torn up anew

Home at night, alone with you
Suddenly, I see
That fear, in all its mystery
Has stolen you from me

There's always a change
From what you say
To what your fingers do
And touch me in a simple way
That sends your words askew
If I could arrange
For you to say
The words that are your truth
And come to light
And carry through
We'd finally make this right

I know there's a change
When you're holding me
And when your bed is empty
The droplets we cried in pure tragedy
Show us what is missing
And you're so alone
You know when I'm gone
You're back to misery
Stop your burning mind
The answer you're to find
Only lies in me

Creative Endeavors / Winter Solstice, Spring and Fall
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:02:34 am »
I wrote a song with this title four years ago, but I completely reworked it last night. It is no longer fiction and is really, really important to me. It felt very good to write :D

Winter solstice, spring and fall
A better life, a greater call
I can feel the summer's fading
And crickets chirp outside here
I stand poised, always waiting
For your attention to divide
'Cause now, alone and on my own
It's easy to think what haunts me
Could dessimate the dreams of home
That I may never see

Trapped inside a snow globe world
We twist and turn, we spin and swirl
I watch you as you flutter past
Your visions moving much too fast
And lives apart as we may be
You never flew too far from me

Winter solstice, spring and fall
Seasons pass without your call
Crystals form around my window
Then wash away into the spring
And time has made me tamer
And old feelings start to fade
My stubborn heart removes the blame
From choices you once made
And suddenly I smile again
Picturing what might have been

Trapped inside a snow globe world
We twist and turn, we spin and swirl
I watch you as you flutter past
Your visions moving much too fast
And lives apart as we may be
You never flew too far from me

But as choices come and chances go
And melt into the fallen snow
Love becomes timeless
And memories shine
And our faded colors show
True, though years will pass
We'll hold onto our best
My tears will never show
And I'll never let you go

"You'll have to come visit."
You spoke over coffee
Eyes bright and eager for me to agree
My smile was alive
So my doubt wouldn't show
"You must promise you won't forget me when you go."

But you said it'd never happen
You couldn't know how much I've prayed
That you'll try to keep your promise
The only one you ever made

"Oh, will you miss me?"
You spoke from your pillow
The laugh in your voice said you didn't think so
Glad for the dark
So my tears wouldn't show
I cry for you more than you'd possibly know

But you said we have the summer
The sunshine and the shade
And you're going to keep your promise
The only one you ever made

How can I tell you I'm home in your house
In your bed with the soft childrens' sheets?
How can I tell you that I'll be lost
Without you there to lead?
How can you expect me to stop loving you
Just because you're not here to see?
It cuts me down to pieces now
There's a piece of you in each of me

Creative Endeavors / 3000 Out From Paradise
« on: April 06, 2007, 06:15:15 am »
My soul's torn open
My tears on the page
My lips are swollen
My heart's enraged

And in this moment I should tell you
I should scream and raise some hell
But I just bite my lip and pray to God
You'll never know my smile's a thin facade

'Cause I couldn't break your spirit
Or rain on your parade
So I'll smile with you
And forever lay
In this shallow grave
And forever feel the side-effects
Of the mess you've made
3000 out from paradise
I feel your heartbeat fade

Your soul is light
Your tears don't show
Your lips speak goodbye
Your heart's aglow

And in this moment I should tell you
I should scream and raise some hell
But I just bite my lip and pray to God
You'll never know my smile's a thin facade

'Cause I couldn't break your spirit
Or rain on your parade
So I'll smile with you
And forever lay
In this shallow grave
And forever feel the side-effects
Of the mess you've made
3000 out from paradise
I feel your heartbeat fade

These thoughts will never cross the surface
And when you sit alone
In a city lined with dirt
Without the life you could've known
You wouldn't say you miss me
Your pride just won't allow
For painful trivialities
And what I'm doing now

Creative Endeavors / My Mother, She Was Wrong
« on: January 08, 2007, 12:08:22 pm »
I found it to be rather ironic that, when I was little my mom would tell me things would be better in the morning. I lived by that until now, when I realized I'd rather be in the dark with this guy while he broke my heart, because I didn't realize it was broken til morning when I could see clearly.

My mother used to tell me
Things look better in the morning
The sunshine keeps your trouble from
Coming on without a warning
A kiss on the forehead
I'm sent off to bed
I'd try to forget the monsters in my head

But the night will hide my secrets
My mother, she was wrong
In the dark I cannot see the hurt
That's plagued me for so long
I'll never fear the dark again
It hides me from my sin

You're striking in the morning
More than any other hour
The sun shines on your features
And radiates with power
A kiss on the forehead
I'm sent from your bed
I try to forget it's not just in my head

But the night will hide your secrets
The sunshine reads you wrong
In the dark I cannot speak the truth
That's plagued me for so long
I'll never fear the dark again
It hides me from your sin

Star light, star bright
There are no stars tonight
I wish I may, I wish I might
Hide my demons from the light
Don't try and read me
There's not even a chance
You'd ever know my circumstance
I lie with you in bed and know
You'll never see what black doesn't show

And we have plenty to say.

Firstly, me and Sammy (ordinaryday6) took a little adventure to San Fran this week. We got there on Sunday afternoon and left this (Friday) morning.
On Sunday afternoon, I called my buddy who works in Third Eye Blind's management office, and he invited us down to SF Soundworks studio in Soma to spend the afternoon/evening with Vanessa and Stephan while she did some tracking.
Soooooooooo he picked us up and brought us down to the studio (in a rather shady neighborhood) and left to run errands while Sammy and I just chilled with Nessa and SJ. When we got there she was in the middle of doing The One. Which sounds AMAZING if I do say so myself. I am a sucker for violins and HOT DAMN are there some sweet strings in that song. I loooooved it. It was really awesome to hear her with a band again, hopefully (I hope, anyways) there will be no more p/v's on this album, I don't care for them much.
Nextly was Best Behaviour (which WILL be called Best Behaviour, we were told). It could go either way. On the one hand, there was this horn section in the chorus that Stephan thought was "soulful" but V (and the two of us) thought were HORRIBLY cheesy. Luckily, though, by the time they finished the song they weren't playing the horn track anymore so maybe it won't make the album. If it does I will personally strangle Stephan with my bare hands. What we thought was the best part was the bridge and the instrumental and the following chorus. The little breakdown instrumental after the bridge got a bit more complicated (I think, I haven't listened to the bootleg in awhile) and that chorus has the piano and guitar and everything but the drums (and maybe bass) drop out and she sings, and then everything drops for "ended too soon." GOOD STUFF.
Last was PYHOM, which they've been calling Hands On Me (maybe to please her mom? lol), and she only did vocals and a little bit of midi piano for. It also sounds really good. My friend (who I'm not naming on purpose in case it wasn't obvious) says that it has some really killer strings in it but they didn't use them in the sound booth playback. She added a cute little vocal sort of [arpeggio?] I don't know the techincal term. Anyways she added it in the bridge after "old." She was really excited about it... We laughed. Anyways yeah, so that also sounds awesomeeeeeee EXCEPT for one little thing we caught when we listened to a mixed version of it (which I'll get into in a minute), which is some really whacked-out off-the-wall backing vox at the end when she's repeating "hands ooooon meeee" or whatever. Some opera business (exaggerated, but that's what it reminded me of).
Oh and there's sweet harmonies in the choruses of PYHOM and The One.

So on Tuesday we went over to my friend's house and listened to some stuff, mostly Third Eye Blind, but also mixed/mastered versions of Nessa's new stuff, including ALL IS WELL and WOW. All I have to say about that is <333333333333333333333333333333
We also heard BB (without the horns!), The One, Put Your Hands On Me and This Time. Honestly (and I'm not being biased, I swear), I do not care much for Linda Perry's production. We also listened to two other Perry songs, Spring Street and Wave Goodbye. Spring Street is alright but sort of lacking in the lyrics department. Example: the chorus is variations of "he said, na na na na na na naaaaaaaaa." Okie dokie then. It reminded me a lot of Who's to Say in the sense that she's telling her mom that she has to let her go. Or something like that. Forgive me for lacking details about this stuff we were sort of stoned.
The other song, Wave Goodbye, all I remember is NOT liking it and getting this really weird California Dreamin' vibe off of it. Obviously this is just our opinion though, everyone is allowed to form their own. We may all be surprised later.

But anyways back to the studio. For anyone who has EVER said that Vanessa is even KIND OF a bitch, kindly bend over so I can insert my foot up your ass. She welcomed us in, introduced herself, chatted with us, offered wine and cookies, let us play with LORD VICTOR (OMFG SO CUTE) and was totally apologetic when he pooped on our walk. HAHA. She was just soooo sweet. And anyone who thinks that Stephan has complete control of what goes on in the studio, IMO she has got him SO whipped. Basically she is doing exactly what she wants with the songs and I think she's taking them in a really good direction. And she loves pita chips. And that's an understatement.

Some pics...

Here is my disclaimer:
I had mixed feelings posting all this cause I know some people like to be surprised about everything. Keep in mind no one forced you to read all this.
Second, I have video I recorded of her playing to The One and Best Behaviour. They are short clips, less than a minute each. If anyone wants them, let me know and I'll post. If there are any strong objections, let me know and I won't post. If there are any mild objections, no one's forcing you to listen. But trust me they are savory.
Hope you enjoyed this 23432708309830948032302943 paragraph long post.

Press my ear to the wall from the room next door
Listen hard to hear her give you something more
The rhythm runs up and down
Bedposts scrape across the ground
And I hate myself for loving what I lay here listening to
'Cause in the dark I can make believe it's me all over you

And I need, I need
A little more than what I'm gettin'
I see you there
Pretending to care
You know I'm worth forgetting

All night long isn't quite long enough for you
As the sun comes up, I come to
I hear you rock and roll next door
Wasting moans on your cheap whore
And hate myself for hating what I lay here listening to
'Cause just last night I made believe it was me all over you

And I need, I need
A little more than what I'm gettin'
You bite my tongue
Push me out
You know I'm worth forgetting

I'm dying
I'm restless
I'm crying
I'm selfish
I need to believe that
You look at me and
You feel the same I do
I'm drowning without you
Remembering that I'm alive and
I'm confused
I'm fearing
It's no use
I'm weary
I just can't believe that
You look at me and
You don't even notice
Your eyes just won't focus
I'm standing and you don't see me

Live Shows / 10/27/2005: Wittenberg University - Springfield, OH (review)
« on: October 27, 2005, 08:52:10 pm »
This was a really fun show. I'm not so hot at writing reviews but I can tell you what she played at least... The setlist went SOMETHING like this:

Papa
San Francisco
Who's To Say
Divide and Conquer
White Houses
Put Your Hands On Me
The One
C'est la Vie
Winter
Best Behaviour
This Time
A Thousand Miles
Twilight

And everyone sat down in chairs

And there was no energy... I looked around and was unpleasantly surprised to see I was the ONLY one singing along (except to Ordinary Day). Then when she started playing her little intro to WH (the chorus notes), the audience started cheering and she told us she was thrilled that we knew the song. When she got to "maybe I'm a little bit..." A bunch of girls got up (me included) and ran to the front of the stage and Nessa was SHOCKED (in a good way) and afterwards she said that we choked her up because no one knows the album or the song... I was so happy for her, lol. The new songs were fantastic to hear live and I now officially love This Time and The One which were not that appealing to me before.
Her voice sounded really good, the sound system was much better than the last show I went to, although she did try one note on Papa that had me :x  But that was really the only major rough spot. I thought that Annie was particularly good tonight, as was Who's To Say.
My friend Chris and I ran to the back afterwards hoping for an autograph but we saw her get in her car (with her cute little doggie!!) and drive away, but no biggie cause I met her once and I was just happy with a good show.

The opening band, Raining Jane... AWESOME. I LOVED them. They were so damn refreshing. Funny, honest; they were a chick band that was actually GOOD. They were a four-piece and all of them played every instrument but one girl played the cello as well. And damn could they sing. They sang three part harmonies, kind of like the Wreckers. Only better 8O
I talked with the drummer afterwards and she was a doll, I asked for her autograph and she was so excited and touched by my compliments. I suggest you guys check them out.

Creative Endeavors / Your Lullaby
« on: July 16, 2005, 01:32:22 pm »
I'm way proud of this one.

Your Lullaby

I don't know where you go
When you're alone inside your head
And you seem to hard to reach
And I remember what you said
When I was staring at your face
So far away from me
You said, "Darlin', I'm just waiting
"For the day when I feel free."

Then you sang me a blue lullaby
Under the red September sky
And the hazel of your eyes
Reflected back into the night
While the velvet in your voice
Took me to another time
When our summer skies were golden
And your soul, it seemed so open to me

Well there ain't no light that shines now
But the fire in the hearth
And I watch you from afar
And you seem to fall apart
But you said to me, "Baby,
"Just as long as we sit here
"I can reach inside my heart
"And make the pain disappear."

Then you sang me a blue lullaby
Under the red September sky
And the hazel of your eyes
Reflected back into the night
While the velvet in your voice
Took me to another time
When our summer skies were golden
And your soul, it seemed so open to me

I don't know where you go
When you're alone inside your head
And I don't know what you're dreamin'
While you're sleeping in your bed
All I know is that I pray tonight
That you're thinking about me
'Cause I can't imagine you and I
Living seperately

Then you sang me a blue lullaby
Under the red September sky
And the hazel of your eyes
Reflected back into the night
While the velvet of your voice
Made me almost lose my mind
'Cause I'm still waiting for the day
That babe, you say that you feel free.

Other Musicians / Shane Piasecki
« on: May 28, 2005, 08:30:21 am »
http://www.shanepiasecki.com

Shane is an 18 year old singer-songwriter from Toledo, OH. He's a friend of mine from church.
He has played shows in Toledo opening for Hootie and the Blowfish, Jason Mraz, Nick Motil and Gavin DeGraw and plays regular shows in the area. I hadn't seen him in a year but last night I saw him live and he has made leaps and bounds as a musician. He's got a gorgeous voice and writes "dear diary" sort of lyrics. He has been compared to John Mayer and Jason Mraz, but has a strong desire to establish himself as an original artist.
You can download samples from his album, All for Coffee and unreleased mp3s at his website. PLEASE check him out, he has amazing potential. :D
