Of course the album has to become available when I'm in a place where I'm almost never left alone and the wifi is the woooorrrrrssst. Being the dedicated Nessaholic that I am though, I didn't give up and I was finally able to listen to the album last night.
Liberman is a freaking masterpiece. I honestly can't decide if it tops Rabbits or not, but they're both pretty different so I'm not sure I can really compare my love for both of them. Vanessa definitely succeeded in creating the 'dream-like' sound that she was talking about. The album is so beautiful and peaceful and smooth and dreamy and oh-so lovely.
My thoughts on each song(sorry - I had to gush about this album SOMEWHERE):
Take it Easy: Although the live version will always have a super special place in my heart(and I still listen to it from time to time), the studio version has really grown on me and I adore it. A great choice for the first track.
Willows: Lovely.
House of Seven Swords: Wowowoow. Magic. Vanessa sounds like an angel on this track. Also, it's really interesting to see how much the sound has evolved from the demo(which I also adore - it's so trippy).
Operator: I'm so happy that this track ended up on the record! Absolutely in love with this song.
Blue Pool: Lush and dreamy. Love the piano on this one.
Nothing Where Something Used To Be: I know some people are unhappy with the studio version, but I'm in love with it.
Matter of Time: Wasn't the biggest fan of the live version, but I'm very impressed with the studio version. It's going to win me over in a few listens.
Unlock the Lock: I adore this track. I love the piano melodies.
River: I have to admit that I wasn't the biggest fan of the live version, but the album version is great!
Ascension: Just like In the End, I'm going to have to listen to this one a few times before my appreciation for it really grows.
The wait for Liberman was so worth it. I'm so happy with the result! I really can't wait to take long walks with this album.
Well said. I love the fact that there's this different take on the song in both the studio and the living room sessions. I love songs that have either duality in their lyrics and/or in the way that it is performed live and in its studio version. I think it speaks volumes of her musicality to create a song that serves different functions live and in the studio.
I cannot wait to hear the studio versions of the rest of the songs and compare them to the living room sessions.
If you say it like that then I totally agree. Especially about the duality. Very curious now if the other living room sessions are vastly different to their studio version counterparts.
We're at 10 days now; so, we don't have to wait much longer. A part of me wishes that I would have refrained from listening to any of the live recordings she has done.
Still hope Unlock the Lock and especially House of Seven Swords sound like the live versions.
The only track I haven't spoiled myself to is River.
I personally like the studio version of NWSUTB because of the sheer fact that it is different from the living room sessions. I think it is very reflective to V's vision of the record--how it is a dreamy and dance-y music on one side and emotional on the other. Whereas the living room session version was about vulnerability, the studio version gives the impression of a seance-y meditation on heartbreak. I also like the layering of echoes in this version because it does take me into that seemingly out-of-the-body experience she aims to achieve.
Did anyone also got the impression that ironically, the studio version sounds sadder as opposed to the living room sessions version which sounds more hopeful because of the bright piano notes? I'm getting this feeling that there's an actual change in the chords between the live and the studio versions.
I'll be there! I've had to drive four hours to Chicago the last four times I've seen her so I'm ecstatic she'll be just an hour away.
I am attending too. But I especially come from France to see her. It is my first time! But I am alone (alas, there are not many Vanessa’s French fans anymore) ! If somebody wants to go to the concert with me, let me know it.
It will be a dream come true. I grew up with her music; I started to play the piano thanks to her and above all, I started to really love music with Harmonium. She made me realize how music can be moving and touching. I owe her much.
