The two-year war between HD DVD and Blu-ray officially ended Tuesday morning as Toshiba waved the white flag and declared it would stop producing HD DVD products.

The company, which began sales of HD DVD in March 2006 with the HD-A1 player, "decided it was not right for us to keep going with such a small presence," said chief executive Atsutoshi Nishida. The Blu-ray format is now the definitive winner in the war and stands unopposed as the optical media replacement for DVD.

Toshiba's news release goes into a bit more detail: "Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand."

Three movie studios currently support HD DVD--Universal, Paramount, and DreamWorks Animation--but we expect them to follow suit and announce support of Blu-ray sooner rather than later.

With Blu-ray support announced by industry heavyweights Netflix, Wal-mart and Best Buy, speculation ran rampant before the weekend that Toshiba would end the war, and the company deserves credit for pulling out as soon as it did. The two incompatible formats have led to plenty of confusion among prospective buyers of next-generation hardware and software, although some have opined that the war was a good thing--at least it led to price drops.

We've been advising readers against the purchase of HD DVD players since the announcement by Warner Brothers in January that it would exclusively support Blu-ray. That doesn't mean we're telling everyone to rush out and buy a Blu-ray player now; we still believe that most home theater fans would be better served to wait for prices on players to fall. Of course, with the exit of Blu-ray's major competition, those prices may fall later rather than sooner.

"J.K. Rowling, author of the world-wide best-selling Harry Potter series, met some of her American fans tonight and provided some surprising revelations about the fictional characters who a generation of children have come to regard as close friends.

In front of a full house of hardcore Potter fans at Carnegie Hall in New York, Rowling, sitting on the stage on a red velvet and carved wood throne, read from her seventh and final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," then took questions. One fan asked whether Albus Dumbledore, the head of the famed Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, had ever loved anyone. Rowling smiled. "Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling as the audience errupted in surprise. She added that, in her mind, Dumbledore had an unrequited love affair with Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort's predecessor who appears in the seventh book. After several minutes of prolonged shouting and clapping from astonshed fans, Rowling added. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy.""

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Irritated with Vanessa's MySpace
« on: October 09, 2007, 02:30:41 pm »
What is UP with them not accepting comments since July? Jesus christ. It's been three months, there's no excuse for them to disrespect people taking their time to leave a note or something nice for Vanessa and just like, completely ignore them and not put up their comments.

People get irritated and fed up and stop bothering. This isn't helping matters. And this is completely unexcusable since it's been her primary communication outlet with fans until just today when the website finally went up.

Ugh.

Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / Heavenly Sword - PS3
« on: September 28, 2007, 07:53:06 pm »

Has anyone here played Heavenly Sword yet? This game is seriously amazing, I've never been so stunned and completely amazed while playing a video game before. The cinematography is superb... well, basically everything about this game is awesome.

Even if you don't own a PS3, find someone who does and make them buy it so you can watch it, lol. It's quite the experience.

My friend Megan who never plays video games and doesn't care for them went "Holy shit" when she saw it and insisted on playing it, haha.

Vanessa Songs / Lyrics / Sheet Music / Come Undone (lyrics)
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:58:49 pm »
I’ve seen myself in a thousand faces strung out on life’s path
I will add up what you mean to me but I cannot do the math
And this fashionista’s garden party – well I had enough of that

’Cuz the only one I come undone for is you
’Cuz the only one I come undone

But I am special lover sometimes but you’ll only touch a ghost
I’m a sycophantic courtier with an elegant repose
Needless to say you’re the one that I need the most

’Cuz the only one I come undone for is you
’Cuz the only one I come undone for is you
Well the only one I come undone for is you

I know I’m done
Now I see the truth
I know I’m done
Come undone for you
You’ve been gone so long
Waiting here for you
You’ve been gone so long
Come undone for you

There are people in this lifetime we should never meet
Cuz to be here now without you well, my life’s so incomplete
I’ll tell you what you mean to me and maybe then you’ll see
Ahhh-hhh-hhh…
Ahhh-ahhh-nahhh-ahhh

’Cuz the only one I come undone for is you
’Cuz the only one I come undone for is you
Oh the only one I come undone for is you

No, no…

Vanessa Songs / Lyrics / Sheet Music / Spring Street (lyrics)
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:39:06 pm »
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na

I was heading down to Spring Street
With a suitcase in my hand
And filled with love and life and grand delusions
I knew you’d understand

When I left you by the stairwell
And your eyes were wet with tears
Mother you knew you had to let me go
Even after all these years

(And we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(And she said)
Na na na na na na na
(We’ll walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(We’re alright)

And I found myself a new life
And I’ve been living with some friends
And we hold on to dreams and live like kings
Like the days will never end

And I left him by the statue
And his eyes were filled with tears
Lover you knew had to let me go
Even after all these years

(And we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(And he said)
Na na na na na na na
(We’ll walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(We’re alright)
Na na na na na na na

And everything changes
And friends become strangers
And what he hold so dear slips away
The past keeps on fading
But I’ll never forget you
It’s hard to see that you’re a part of me
Even when we have to say

Na na na na na na na
(We’ll walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(When we sing)
Na na na na na na na
(We’re alright)
Na na na na na na na

And I moved out of the city
To start a family of my own
And when I look into my daughters eyes
I don’t feel so alone
And as I walk her down to spring street
And she holds onto my hand
Mother you knew my eyes would be wet with tears
And now I understand

Na na na
Na na na na na na na
(And I said)
Na na na na na na na
(Walk on)
Na na na na na na na
(And thank you)
Na na na na na na na

Walk on
We’re alright
Can’t hold on

Here's the lyrics for Spring Street, even though I think the na na's are super annoying lol.

Oh shit! I called it Come Undone! It's Spring Street! Hahaha.

Vanessa Songs / Lyrics / Sheet Music / My Best (lyrics)
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:37:14 pm »
Mm-mm-mm-mmm
We scream and shout
And try to make it last
Though it didn’t work out
I don’t love you any less
My lover or friend
I won’t ever tell
Our secret safe - an unspoken citadel

And in these broken times
When it’s so easy to forget
So I sing to remind upon my shoulder you can rest
Because I’ll always give you my best

A sidewalk path leads me to you
Though we don’t look back
We hold on to a truth

And in these broken times
I promise I will not forget
Though you’re not mine
Upon your shoulder I can rest
Because you always give me your best

It’s like a promised kept
It’s like you never left
It’s like you never left

Mm-mm-mm-mmm
Ah-ahh-ahh-ahh

I know it’s been so long
I can never seem to forget
All it takes is a song
And I can swear I hear your steps down the hall
Down the hall that goes up past
That leaves an ache
Because I gave you my best

It’s like you never left
it’s like you never left

Ah-ahh-ahh-ahh
We scream and shout
And try to make it last

~~~
There are two trouble spots with this song, I can't tell what she saying during the first line of the "It's like you never left" I know the first line is different, I think I hear a 'p' sound or something? I dunno.
And the line after "And I can swear I hear your steps down the hall" is hard to make out as well.
Any suggestions?
It's been edited with some corrections provided below.
Has anyone read the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman? Amazing series, best fantasy book collection in my opinion. Completely blows the likes of Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia out of the water.
New Line Cinemas, and the teams who worked on The Lord of the Rings are now bringing this trilogy to flim, and the first installment, The Golden Compass is being released in theaters this winter. The film has a budget of 150 million (More expensive than the first installment for LOTR), and it looks amazing.
Nicole Kidman (Who plays the villain), Daniel Craig (The new James Bond) and Eva Green are in it. :) It has an amazing cast.
Here's the trailer -
You guys should definately consider reading the books, I kid you not, they're amazing. The author writes a very compelling and dark tale and has an interesting take on religion, spirituality, politics, physics and the multi-verse. It's a very mature read in some aspects, even though it's geared towards younger readers as well as older ones.
Edit -
Here's an extended preview worth watching!  :D
It's about 5 minutes long.
Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / The Simpsons Movie
« on: July 30, 2007, 11:04:07 am »
If you haven't seen this movie yet, seriously. Go. Right now. Drop whatever you're doing and just go see it.
After years and years of watching this show the movie did not disapoint me at ALL. It seriously has like, EVERYTHING.
If you like the Simpsons you owe it yourself to see this movie. Even if you're just a casual viewer, it's still extremely funny.
Sooo, being a new member of the record label we can all assume that Vanessa's interacted and has been around her fellow label mates at some point or another.
And Ja Rule was arrested just last night for speeding and was found to be carrying a .40-calibur gun with him.
So, lol. Vanessa's hanging around a bunch of gun carrying thugs it seems. I can't help but feel this reflects badly on the Inc especially with the incident that happened recently involving another rapper, Remy Ma, who was arrested for attempted murder. You'd think other rappers would lay low for awhile and not perpetuate any more stereotypical negativity concerning their community.
What does Ja Rule, a rich music artist, need a stupid a gun for.
So I just can't help but doubt Vanessa's decision by embracing this new "family" of hers. I dunno. Irv is awesome and all, but with his past history and now this stupid shit involving a label member, c'mon, what the hell.
