Live Shows / Re: 11/15 Largo, West Hollywood (review)
« on: November 16, 2013, 01:36:57 pm »
The show was SO amazing. Vanessa and Skye put on a phenomenal show. Her voice was so rich and powerful-- I was so awe-struck! And it was really nice to see her there with Skye, because his violin just makes the songs even more beautiful. She also had her goddaughter/niece come out to sing the "we will live like kings under lavender skies" part at the end of Bride (with the girls from Birdcloud), which I thought was SO sweet, although we couldn't really hear her. She came out to the merch table after to say hi and also sign. I was fortunate to get Skye's setlist, which I had him and Vanessa sign. I think I was probably incredibly awkward with them, but arghhhhh, I just need to get over that. It was great to meet them, even if I did seem like a crazed fan!

Live Shows / Vanessa at the Getty Center?
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:52:19 pm »
This was posted to Vanessa's Facebook about an hour ago: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150369448261429&set=a.10150354421431429.353431.24127846428&type=1

"Sky like an ocean. Playing at the Getty center tonight. View at sound check. Not too shabby"

I didn't know she was going to be performing at the Getty Center!? Does anyone happen to have anymore information about this? I can't find anything online, except this post! :X

Live Shows / 07/08/11 Largo at the Coronet - Los Angeles, CA (REVIEW)
« on: July 09, 2011, 12:05:16 am »
I was blown away by this show. It was my first concert ever, and I have to say, it set the bar high for any concerts I go to in the future. It was absolutely amazing.

I don't have the official setlist, but here's what I remember (not in order):

Heroes & Thieves
Who's to Say
Hands on Me
Tall Tales for Spring
Dear California
Nolita Fairytale
Fools Like Me
Fair Weather Friend
A Thousand Miles
I Don't Want to Be A Bride
Get Good
White Houses
London

Marching Line
Home
Carousel (with Stevie Nicks)

I thought the opening act (Maia Sharp) was pretty good too, although I don't know the names of the songs she played.

I didn't get to meet V because I had to leave shortly after the show ended. But, my sister and I sat behind Stevie Nicks in the audience, so that was pretty cool! Also, Ari was there, but not Skye. I missed him. :(

Vanessa was skjdhkfgliuyrwehfkjhd INCREDIBLE!! Her voice is so beautiful and strong (I have to say it, even though we all already know it!) and her piano playing really gets to me. I actually started crying during Who's to Say and Home. I was very impressed. Hopefully this will be one of many V shows I get to attend in the future. I loved the Largo too. It has a nice atmosphere.

I was recently going through the genres in my iTunes library and I noticed I put Pop, Rock, Pop-folk, and Vocal as the genres for V's songs. But I don't really think her style fits those genres (well maybe Pop-folk). The iTunes store also has her down for Pop, Singer/songwriter, and Rock. So I was wondering, what do other Nessaholics put her under?

Live Shows / 7/11/11 KCRW School Night at Bardot, Hollywood, CA
« on: July 01, 2011, 06:28:30 pm »
Do you guys know if this is a newly added show? I saw it on the updated website, and I don't think I remember it being on the tour date list before, and there isn't already a thread on here, so I figured I'd start one.

The second site says "Free with RSVP: www.itsaschoolnight.com" so I take it this is a free show??? The bardothollywood.com site isn't very helpful...

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Hands on Me Single Cover

Did you guys know that there was cover art for the Hands on Me single? I stumbled upon it today, and I thought I would share for anyone else that didn't know:

If this is really old news, I'm sorry......I just got so excited when I saw this!  ;D

When you guys listen to V's entire albums, do you get a sense that they were written to be listened to during a certain season? For example, I like to listen to Harmonium in the late summer/early fall. Maybe it's because of the lyrics "well summer's all in bloom/summer's ending soon" in White Houses and "just when the days start getting colder" in Afterglow and Half a Week Before the Winter.

Heroes & Thieves is a late winter/early spring album for me. It gives me a triumphant feeling, like we made it through winter, and now we're enjoying spring.

I am divided on Be Not Nobody, though, just because I haven't listened to that one all the way through enough. The brighter songs remind me of spring, but the darker ones remind me of late fall/early winter.

And from what we've heard from Rabbits on the Run, I think it will have a very Harmonium feel to it, but maybe more summery.

I love how V is so in tune with with the seasons and how she likes to reference nature in her songs!

Hey guys, I don't you if you remember, but one time when Vanessa played "Fair-Weather Friends" at a show, she prefaced it with a short blurb about the book The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. It was on one of the live recordings of the song, and after hearing her say it each time I listened to the song, I decided that I should probably look into that book. So, I checked it out from my University's library at the beginning of the quarter and I started reading it. Sadly, my workload became heavier, and I was not able to finish the book. I was wondering if any other Nessaholics read the book after she suggested it. I didn't quite see the elements that V talked about, but that's probably because I failed to finish the book. However, I felt like it was a very well written memoir and I will have to return to it again when I get more time. Do any of you have any thoughts on this book?

Hi guys! I was playing "Half a Week Before The Winter" the other day on the piano, and I was just thinking about how much fun it is to play that song. So, I was wondering what are some of your favorite VC songs to play on piano, and why?

Introduce Yourself / Hi There!
« on: October 23, 2010, 04:48:47 pm »
Hi everyone! I'm Aubrie. I am new to the Nessaholics site, but I've been a fan for about four years now. :D
I learned to play the piano mostly to be able to play Vanessa's songs! Hahaha, but I've started to learn others now.
I've never been to a concert, but I plan to go to one if she comes to So Cal on her next tour for Rabbits on the Run. I cannot wait for that album!!! The live versions I've heard of Carousel (sooooooo pretty!), Tall Tales for Spring (reminds me of Harmonium), I Don't Wanna Be a Bride (I like the guitar), London, and Fair-Weather Friends sound great. I can't imagine how they can sound any better on CD!

Oh, I'm also a pretty obsessive The Fray fan as wells as a VC fan. :) I love good music.
