Polls / European Constitution
« on: October 01, 2004, 03:52:21 pm »
I know this is a Europe only issue so few of you non-Europeans (and few Europeans even... I know there's a lot of indifference towards this, esp in places like the UK) will be interested. Just wanted to see whether any of you are motivated by the thought of having a European Constitution at all.

I have heard there is going to be a referendum in Spain around February and have given it a lot of thought. Even though I am and have always been a firm supporter of the European Union and its political projects, I am not quite sure I want to vote yes to this. I really really want a European Constitution, there is no way the EU can go forward without eventually having one (even though it's basically just another name for a new treaty that would mix all existing ones) but I don't like the conditions in which this constitution would be signed, and the position it would leave Spain in. When Aznar's party was still in government I completely agreed, but now with the new socialist government we have just given in to France and Germany's wishes and I am not sure I want that reflected on something as long lasting as a Constitution.

Anyway, I could go on rambling about this forever... but does anybody else have an opinion?

In case nobody knows what I'm talking about here's a link to a site about it

Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / East Of Eden (book and film)
« on: September 30, 2004, 06:55:28 am »
Has anybody read the book? It's by John Steinbeck and one of my favourites. It was turned into a film in the 50s, starring James Dean. Even though he's one of my favourite actors and I have the film at home I have never dared to see it cos the book is so amazing I didn't want to ruin the good impression it left.

Best. Film. Ever. I must have watched it like 631047163 times.

Kate Hudson is absolutely amazing here. So is Frances McDormand. It just so happens that they each got an Oscar nomination for their role in this film ;) I also love Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Patrick Fugit, and Zooey Deschanel, and Anna Paquin... The whole cast is just incredible! The director, Cameron Crowe, received an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, I think. Quite deservedly, btw :) In case anyone's interested, the whole script, including deleted/non-filmed scenes, can be found here

The soundtrack is brilliant too. Check it out.

PS: I'm not sure whether there's already some other thread about this film, if there is, I'm sorry. Mods can delete it, or merge it, or whatever...

Other Musicians / Eurovision 2004
« on: May 08, 2004, 07:07:11 am »
It takes place in Istanbul, Turkey, this year. There will be a qualifying round on May 12th (I think) and the final will be May 15th.

Have you heard your country's entry? Or any other entry? What do you think?

Personally, I think the Spanish entry is a whooooole load of crap! It's called "Para llenarme de ti", by Ramon (one of the winners of the Spanish Pop Idol - Operación Triunfo). I haven't heard any more entries though, and they all tend to be pretty cheesy don't they? ;)

"By 2000, Hanson once more leaped into a daring new direction, defying expectations with their second album, This Time Around. This time around, the group stressed their self-contained nature, their song writing prowess and musicianship and the fact that they produce their own records, though they did welcome collaborators such as Jonny Lang and John Popper into the studio. The introspective album turned out to be another harbinger, this time of the new breed of singer-songwriter that included not only Branch and Lavigne, but soon-to-be-contemporaries like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Vanessa Carlton, etc. "

There ya go. Just found it when I was having a look at the page. Not very interesting but they still mention her :)

Remember this time last year? The concert was about to begin. I've been thinking about it all day, feeling really nostalgic. I didn't realise what day it was til someone told me in uni, and I remembered :)

This day last year was great, one of the best experiences of my life. Just wanted to make a remembrance thread and thank you guys for how awesome it was... I miss you all so much, I can't wait til Vanessa goes to London again and we can repeat the experience!

Huge hugs for all my London chums *mwah* Love you,

Nerea a.k.a. Chorizo Chum

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Charmed Soundtrack
« on: January 09, 2004, 10:05:20 am »
I was at a CD shop this afternoon and found out they included "Rinse" in the Charmed soundtrack. Had anybody else seen it? I'm not sure it's been posted before. Full track listing is:

1. Hot - Smash Mouth
2. Danger - Third Eye Blind
3. Strict Machine - Goldfrapp
4. Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics
5. Rinse - Vanessa Carlton
6. I Can’t Take It - Andy Stochansky
7. Worn Me Down - Rachael Yamagata
8. Do You Realize - Flaming Lips
9. New Favourite Thing - Balligomingo
10. Rainbow in the Sky - Ziggy Marley
11. How Soon Is Now - Love Spit Love

Has anybody heard Rinse during any of the episodes? I haven't watched them all but there wasn't any Vanessa music in the ones I've seen... I was a bit surprised to find one of her songs in the soundtrack.[/b]

Some of you might have heard, some of you (esp the US ppl) probably haven't, about the Erasmus programs, which are exchange programs for university students all over Europe. Each university offers a number of foreign universities for their own students to choose from and spend a semester or a whole academic year. I've had a look at the places I can go to, which include most EU countries, Norway, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland and Mexico, and so far my first choice (besides England, but that's a whole different issue) would be Holland. We're given a number of universities in each country and I have no idea of what they're like, so I wanted to ask you Dutchies about the ones in Holland. Here's the list:

- Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
- Universiteit Leiden
- Universiteit Maastricht
- Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen
- Universiteit Van Tilburg

What do you guys know of each of them? Which is the best/the worst7the biggest/the smallest? What are the cities where the unis are located like? Any info would be useful. I would have chosen Groningen, but that's for my own personal reasons. I wanna know what you think. I trust your general knowldege more than the info on the websites. thanks!!

Right now I'm in Frenchland studying some French and having as much fun as this teeny boring town lets me have, so I don't have much time to use the comps let alone write to anybody so I wanted to say hi and send big hugs to everyone out on NH.com, I miss hanging around here!
