Most New Yorkers would walk a thousand miles for the perfect New York City apartment. Songstress Vanessa Carlton only needed to go as far as Soho.
Now, the "A Thousand Miles" singer and composer wants a whopping $17,950 a month for the two-bedroom pad. She has listed it for rent with Lisa Garey of Coldwell Banker Bellmarc, who declined to comment.
The interiors of the 2,500-square-foot loft reflect Carlton's free-spirited style, with vintage furniture, exposed brick, fur accents and ornamental pianos. There are Cameroon headdresses and deer antlers on the wall and a giant diagram of a human heart hangs in the bathroom, which is painted in blood red.
The pad also has wide-plank oak floors, custom iron columns and keyed elevator access.
Carlton snagged the apartment for $1.83 million in 2004, records show. The building has just five units.

To support the release of Vanessa Carlton‘s new digital EP, Hear the Bells, TouchTunes Interactive Networks today announced a first-time partnership with the leading independent record label Razor & Tie for a wide-reaching digital and mobile promotion of the EP across its nationwide network. During the month of December, Hear the Bells will be promoted across TouchTunes’ network of over 50,000 digital jukeboxes and TouchTunesTV screens, and will also be available to fans on the myTouchTunes mobile app.

Officially released on November 21st, the four song digital EP features the holiday classic “Do You Hear What I Hear” and John Lennon‘s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” as well as an acoustic rendition of “Hear The Bells” (from Carlton’s 2011 studio album, Rabbits on the Run.) Vanessa Carlton fans are also treated to the first-ever acoustic re-recording of her mega-hit, “A Thousand Miles.”
In addition, on Friday December 16th, TouchTunes celebrated Carlton’s EP release by hosting an invitation-only event at Dominion NY in New York City. Music industry executives, VIPs, and a select group of fans were treated to a special acoustic performance by Carlton.

Vanessa recently wrapped up a national tour with Matt Nathanson in support of her critically acclaimed album, Rabbits on the Run (Razor & Tie). The album was released this past summer to rave reviews and Carlton appeared on a number of television programs including The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Conan, and Chelsea Lately and was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition.

Girls, eager to relive a pre-teen music obsession, and even a few guys, excited to rekindle an old celebrity crush, attended Vanessa Carlton's sold out Nights on the Heights (NOTH) concert at Robsham Theater on Saturday Nov. 5.
The concert began with three songs by singer-song-writer Nikki Jean; she was the ideal artist to open for Carlton. On the piano, she played the title song off of her debut album, Pennies in a Jar; interestingly, it features Lupe Fiasco on the recorded version of the track. With the song "Million Star Motel," Jean ended her set. However, her voice – both tender and soulful – and her sweet, mellifluous melodies left the audience content and even eager to listen to her longer.
Instead, anxious listeners waited another half-hour for Carlton to take her seat behind the piano. When Carlton did take the stage, the audience erupted in applause. The first song she played, called "Carousel," was from her newly released album, Rabbits on the Run, which came out this past July. She was interrupted in the middle of the song, though, when her microphone made a horrible high frequency noise that not only frightened her, but also surprised the audience; nevertheless, she finished the song, picking up where she left off, like a genuine artist.
Carlton played 13 songs – eight of which were new – during her 75-minute set. Highlights off her new record, and of the concert, included the song "Fairweather Friend," in which Carlton was able to exhibit her flawless falsetto. The new song, "Get Good," was a performance worth noting, as Carlton refrained from playing the piano and simply sang to the strum of a guitar. With a suspenseful and almost ominous introduction on the violin, the song "Hear the Bells" was also memorable.
Though she played many new tracks from her record, Carlton was sure to perform the crowd pleasers too. Switching from the piano to the keyboard, she began to play an unrecognizable interlude that quickly transformed into the unmistakable introduction of "White Houses." Instantly, the crowd cheered and began to sing along as their nostalgia took them back to 2004, when the hit single was released.
As soon as Carlton began the illustrious rift of "A Thousand Miles," the crowd aired the same reaction, taking the decibel up a few notches. She played on, nevertheless, as if she understood and even expected the audience's response. Carlton and the rest of the theater, especially a row of boys who just could not contain their enthusiasm and admiration, finished the song together, prompting her to compliment everyone on their beautiful voices.
Between many of the songs, Carlton interacted with the audience, sharing digressions and anecdotes about each song that truly added to the intimate feel of the concert. Carlton's new material, inspired by her time in London, her friend's divorce, Sylvia Plath, and the California coast, among other things, was made even more engaging and charming by her personal narratives.
She also explained that though she has "been gone for a really long time, it's a pleasure to be back." Carlton told how she spent the last year and a half, hidden away in England, writing and recording Rabbits on the Run. The album is extremely authentic, she said, because she worked tirelessly on the lyrics and because she produced it without a label, funding it by the revenue she made from "A Thousand Miles."
The entire set was extremely stripped down; it featured Carlton, on the baby grand piano and keyboard, and her two fellow musicians, one on the guitar and one on the violin. The trio truly complemented each other, both instrumentally and vocally. The clear and rich sound of the violin balanced the soft sound of Carlton's piano fittingly, and her delicate, airy voice worked well with tempered male harmonies. The acoustic set enabled Carlton to convey tangible emotion to the audience in every song.
After the concert, Carlton greeted fans and autographed tickets in the lobby of the theater. With a smile on her face, she even took a moment to explain to The Heights what it was like to play for the students of Boston College: "It was a privilege to be here, and I felt like I instantly connected with a bunch of strangers that kind of instantly became phantom friends, in a way, in the darkness. I thought it was wonderful, and again, I am just lucky to play for people like this."

Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) will celebrate the organization’s legacy and its future impact on all forms of media by, for and about women at a luncheon on Nov. 3 at the Marriot Marquis in New York.
The program will include a retrospective of AWM’s past 60 years as well as a tribute to AWM’s Sixty@60 which honors the 60 most inspiring women in media today and a performance from Grammy-winning BMI singer-songwriter and musician Vanessa Carlton.
“The Alliance for Women in Media’s 60th anniversary is an is an exciting milestone and I look forward to celebrating with an amazing group of accomplished and inspiring women in the media industry,” said AWM Chair Valerie K. Blackburn. “AWM owes its success and longevity to the innovative and creative media professionals who have promoted media for, by and about women for 60 years.”
“AWM has the special opportunity to reflect on our history and pay tribute to the media professionals who provided the leadership and vision that provided the solid foundation for our organization,” said Erin M. Fuller, CAE, AWM president. “This is also the time to look to the future and continue to develop innovative campaigns and programs to engage and promote women in media.”

Norah Jones, Amy Lee, Chely Wright, Rosie O'Donnell and Skylar Grey are among the celebrities joining Cyndi Lauper's holiday-themed concert to benefit gay teens.
Lauper's Home for the Holidays concert at New York City's Beacon Theater on December 4 will benefit her True Colors Fund, which fights discrimination against the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and helps support Lauper's 30-bed True Colors Residence for homeless gay teens.
“When I first learned that up to 40 percent of all homeless youth in this country identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender I was shocked and saddened,” Lauper said in a statement. “For far too long homeless youth have not received the attention, resources and funding necessary to bring an end to this epidemic. My hope is that through this inspiring evening of music and comedy we can raise awareness and much needed funds to help these young people.”
Also taking part in the musical event are Wanda Sykes, Carson Kressley, Vanessa Carlton, Angelique Kidjo, Harvey Fierstein, Deluka, Debbie Harry, Alan Cumming and Clay Aiken.
Lauper released her eleventh studio album, Memphis Blues, last year. Her upcoming single No Place Like Home for the Holidays will also benefit the fund.
