General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Re: Chris Brown covers Vanessa Carlton.

I was expecting much worse. Chris Brown isn't one of my favorite artists, but it's alright. However, as said before, it seemed pretty lazy.

yay! I like the newer questions and newer responses to things.  I like that she delved into Hear the Bells a little more too.  That was nice.

I was just about to say the same. :D Agreed.

I love this! :D It's very neat, and though it sounds computer generated, that's what you'll get from a computer program. The strings were awesome.

I usually don't keep up with X Factor or American Idol, to be honest, but I encountered some of her videos on youtube and was really enchanted by her voice.

love your work!

do you share anywhere else? would love to check out anything else you've done if you're on one of the lj-based sites.

Thank you!  :D

But, I'm horribly intimidated by livejournal... I make icons and they sit on my computer. It's even rare that I use them. :-\ But I figured that, even if they're not too good, the nessaholics like V so much that it wouldn't matter? :D haha, I'm far too self-conscious...

I always see these threads and think "Ooh, this is going to be fun :D", only to find myself sitting in corner 10 minutes later going "But I love them alllll :'("   Anyway, I'm going to do this through a very intense and painful process of elimination. I'm also going to be a freak and name my favorite of well... many things... because I'm crazy. Here I go!

Demo Tape: Last Fall (This is not her best song technically, but there's something about its raw and unbalanced writing that's haunting. Almost like Tim Burton's older films.)

Rinse: Carnival (No explanation needed. One of the best songs ever... at least in my opinion.)

BNN: Sway (I wasn't expecting this to be, because all the songs on BNN are really cool, but by battling each one against eachother it seems to have won. Awesome.)

Harmonium: She Floats (Possibly my favorite V song ever. I actually liked it even before I'd actually heard it... somehow I ended up with the Harmonium piano book before the album many years ago. Not sure how that happened.)

H&T: This Time (I feel this song gets a lot of hate, but I really like it. That fact may or may not have influenced my decision. ;))

ROTR: Tall Tales for Spring (Very hard decision, but something about this song just works so well. Can't quite explain it.)

Unreleased: Morning Sting (My favorite unreleased one changes by the day.)

Cover: Where The Streets Have No Name (So great.)

what photoshoot was this from?

PS: totally diggin the icons, i wish i was on more boards to i can actually use them :/

I found it in this photoset: http://v-carlton.net/photos/thumbnails.php?album=48  :)

I feel that way sometimes too. :D (So many icons, so little internet socialization! At least in my case.) But I've realized you can use them in a lot more places than I'd thought. If you have MSN (or Windows Live) Messenger or Skype (and probably some others, but I'm not sure which), you can use them there. Some websites like livejournal, tumblr, and even youtube need icons as well.

I made some icons, so feel free to use any. :D If you have any specific icon requests, I can make those too.

I don't necessarily need a download link, but does anyone know where I can a video or mp3 of Vanessa performing 'Sway' or 'Paradise' (not the AOL sessions one) live?

These covers are really nice :D But would you mind if I offered some constructive criticism? I've been taking vocal lessons for around 6 years and my mother is a piano teacher, so I'm just being nitpicky  ;)

You have very good pitch. I love how steady your voice is and you have a great sense of rhythm in your piano playing.

However, I don't feel enough emotion. Although I heard some dynamics in your piano playing, there wasn't much in your vocals. Try to "feel" the music, and lighten your voice when the song is quieter. For example, in 'Hands on Me' both the piano and your vocals should be growing up until the chorus, and lightening up for the next verse.

In terms of your overall vocal sound, you need to work on your vowels. I'm sure there are some good quick little lessons on them on youtube. In singing, the main vocal of the word should be the main sound of the word. Otherwise, it sounds less clean and a bit whiny. Let's use 'Carousel' as an example.  The word 'around' should not be sang as its said. It should be more like, aroooooouuuuu, then close it off with a quick nd. Make sense? :D

But overall, I really love your covers. I know you don't get to play the piano much, but you should definitely work on it when you can. I want to hear more!

Really good playing! I loved the emotion you created in this piece. :D
However, I feel something made the sound muddled. I can't be sure what, but I think it might've been too much pedal, the acoustics of the room, or the piano itself (and two of those you can't do anything about.:( )  But still, really awesome playing!

she signed my cd "dear nicole, always comforting to see you, love vanessa" and when she handed it to me she said, "i really mean that." i thought i was gonna cry.

That's so sweet. It really just makes my day to hear something like that.
