General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Vanessa's Piano Style
« on: September 13, 2006, 03:04:42 am »
For those who know their music theory...

technically speaking, what techniques etc. does Vanessa use recurringly that make up her own style on the piano?

(Wish I could think of a better way to word it, lol.)

Completely Off-Topic / Make-Up Tips!

Hey girls, I know you love talking about hair, how about make-up?

I like doing mine like this:

Vanessa is featured in the fashion pages of the latest (Australian edition) Cosmpolitan magazine. (And keep in mind Harmonium wasn't even released here, so most people think she somehow stopped existing after ATM). I was just flicking through really quickly and I don't know how I spotted her in the blur, (hmmm, must be special Nessaholic powers) but I checked back, and was surprised and happy to find that it was her. Has she been seen in other magazines lately in the lead-up to her new album?

Other Musicians / Alexisonfire
« on: August 18, 2006, 09:30:29 pm »
They're classified as "hardcore" usually, but there's something about them that sets them apart. Part of whatever that is would be the combination of Dallas' gorgeous clean voice and George's unique screaming voice. My favourite song so far is "Happiness By The Kilowatt".

Does anyone else here have the taste to appreciate good music such as this fine band?
No-one replied to my Alice Cooper thread. Shame on you all.

Polls / Smoking
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:36:40 am »
... any opinions? I'm not a smoker, and don't want to be. I don't judge people who do, I have many friends who do... and I understand that once you start, it's hard to stop... what I don't get is why one would want to start smoking... there are many reasons NOT to... but we all know them, so I'm not going to lecture anyone... I'm just interested in opinions

Love em or hate em?

Which ones are classics, which ones are crap?

The thing I hate is that often the high school kids look older than me, and I finished high school way back in 2003! Damn old actors.  :x

Completely Off-Topic / Stupid Trends
« on: July 22, 2006, 02:24:04 am »
What are people wearing/doing etc. where you live that annoys you? What fashion makes you cringe? Which trend makes you want to hide under the covers until it passes? Is there ANYTHING that makes you feel sicker than when you lay eyes on the atrocity that is Crocks? And what about social trends?

For me, it's the "fake punk" look (ie T-shirts that say "Punk Princess"or something equally as stupid, with skulls and butterflies), and people who wear band T-shirts of bands they don't even like... or know exist. For example, The Used. It's a band, not a brand! Some people wouldn't have a clue that they make music, but they wear their shirt with pride because they've seen other people wearing them.

Do any other countries have Supré stores?

Creative Endeavors / Nessaholic Musicians Unite!
« on: July 22, 2006, 01:13:37 am »
My idea:

Us nessaholics who are singers/songwriters/musicians etc. inspired by the work of Vanessa, could have a page on the Nessaholics site, with a photo, brief bio or summary of what we do, links to our sites/myspace pages etc.
It could be like a "If you like Vanessa Carlton, you may also like..." page. I think it would be good for us to support each other, because I'm sure not everyone who visits nessaholics.com joins the forums.

It's just an idea, I understand that it wouldn't necessarily be deemed suitable.

What do you guys think?

Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / Francis Melville

Has anyone here read any of his books?

I have "The Magic Shield: A Manual of Defense Against the Dark Arts"
and
"The Book of Alchemy"

They're really interesting and beautifully illustrated.

What is engrish? The easiest way to understand* is to visit:

www.engrish.com

(*some will NEVER understand!)

It's my favourite website. It's BIZARRE!

Seen any engrish in your travels? To share is my wishness! (you'll understand if you visit the site....maybe)

The other day I saw a Japanese tourist with a T-shirt that read:
"The World is Peaceful:
Since 1922"

Ah, ignorance is bliss.

BTW, I hope this is appropriate for the "entertainment" section... was a toss-up between that and "completely off topic".......

Polls / Fake Rock: Hilary and Ashlee
« on: July 10, 2006, 01:12:20 am »
Hilary Duff says her music is "hard-edge".
Ashlee Simpson reckons she's "alternative".

I think these claims are laughable, but I'll let everyone have their say...

What is your view?

Does anyone play? I used to when I was a kid, but just with my brother. Supposedly it's a game for nerds, but I like it because the artwork is awesome. I haven't played for years. I was once at a market and they had a tournament thingy going on. I walked past and casually had a look (I wanted to see if any of my cards were valuable, coz they had cards for sale... ok it's a bit nerdy of me, lol), and the guy running it was really trying so hard to get me to play, becuase he'd hardly met any girls who played. I think he'd just never met girls, period. He creeped me out and I left, but I thought it was a funny story.
