Polls / Buy... or download?

What do you do when there's a CD you really want?

This is a big issue for the music industry, and the consumer.

For example, if you enjoy Vanessa Carlton's music, but don't buy a CD (or dowload legally), you are essentially cheating Vanessa.

However, if you don't have a lot of money to buy CD's, prices are often seen as too high, and it seems like the record companies and stores are asking for people to dowload illegally, or just burn CD's off their friends.

I have lost jobs at four different CD and DVD retail stores, for the sole reason that there is not enough work to go around. I am very good at the work I do. Hours keep getting cut because companies' profits are down significantly.

This issue affects everyone.

What!? No Kate Bush thread yet?

I think she is brilliantly talented, with a breathtaking voice... anyone agree?

Are you a musician? Choose your primary instrument, or list all you play.
Sorry if I have not included your instrument on the list!!

As for me, I play piano, guitar, bass, and drums... and sing!

EDIT: Dammit, the last option was "No, but I'd like to learn someday", but for some reason it's not there... sorry!

I fixed that for you. -Will

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Music Map

This is strange... NO music I listen to other than V is mentioned... where do they get this information from, and does anyone find this to be accurate for themselves?

What do my fellow Nessaholics listen to apart from Nessa, and why?

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Sex Tape
« on: June 06, 2006, 05:58:28 am »
I did a search using a particular downloading program for Vanessa. What I found was...

"Vanessa Carlton 21 Min Sex Tape Full (Homemade Amateur)"
"Vanessa Carlton (Sex Tape) La Video Porno Avec Son Boyfriend"
"Vanessa Carlton- Exclusive Striptease Video"
"Vanessa Carlton Nude- Video Paparazzi 2005 (11min34s)"
and
"(Paparazzi) Vanessa Carlton- Topless Playa Aout 2005"

WHAT!? I did NOT, I repeat, did NOT download any of these movies, out of respect for Vanessa, and also becuase I'm not into porn at all. But seeing the first file was only 512KB, there's no way it could be the 21 minute video it claims.

Does anyone know any more about the legitimacy of these movies? I don't want anyone to say anything smutty. Vanessa's sex life is none of our business at all. However, the movies' appearance, especially if they are fake, shows a resurgance in popularity for Nessa, even if it's for her body and not her music. So that is a positive. Somewhat.

Again, I want people to know that I respect Vanessa, and I hope everyone else does enough not to say anything disrespectful or distasteful. And if this causes offence to anyone, I apologize.

Why hasn't an Alice Cooper thread been posted already?
He's such a versatile, influential, innovative, original artist!

Who else loves this delightful larrikin?

EDIT: What!? No-one her loves the Coop!? Most people should know "Poison", and "School's Out"....

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Conversions
« on: May 30, 2006, 02:00:47 am »
Heaps if people only know Vanessa as the "A Thousand Miles" girl. SO, does anyone have any interesting stories about "converting" people to the wonderful world of VC? I played a new friend "Morning Sting" today and he was really surprised, he loved it!

Introduce Yourself / Let's Get Acquainted!
« on: May 27, 2006, 05:24:05 pm »
Hi! I'm 19, I'm Australian, I'm a fan of Vanessa (obviously), I'm a muso...

A few more random facts about me:

My favourite Vanessa song is probably Morning Sting.
I reckon "Best Behavior" should be the next single.
Movies don't often make me cry, but songs do.
The last song that made me cry was "The One", because I also knew a "guy, who is very dumb".
Vanessa inspired me to take piano lessons again.
My favourite movie is probably "School of Rock".
There are 3 types of people: Those who LOVE "Kung Pow" fervently, those who HATE "Kung Pow" equally as fervently, and those who haven't seen it. I am one of the lovers.
I wish Josie and The Pussycats were real.
I've never been outside of this country, but when I do, I want to go to Liverpool first! My wish is to visit Fazakerley. If anyone here lives there, I want you to please PM me and tell me about it!
Yes, I do like Vegemite, and I do say "G'day", even though people sometimes look at me weird, despite the fact we're in Australia. Nope, never seen a wild koala. And yes, it's true, we call flip-flops 'thongs', but I find it hilarious that people in the US call your bottom a "fanny"- here, that word means... well, it means vagina. So, when I was a kid, all kids thought that the theme song for "The Nanny" was the funniest thing ever.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Vanessa's Covers
« on: May 27, 2006, 05:28:12 am »
For "Be Not Nobody", Vanessa did a cover of the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black- which turned out darker and edgier than the original (in my opinion at least). For "Harmonium", Nessa recorded a U2 cover- and gave the classic song her own flavour. Also, as you all know, Nessa recorded a really cool, really different, delightfully melancholy version of the traditional favourite, Greensleeves- as well as other live tracks, her take on Time Is On My Side (more 'Stones!), also adding vocals to the Counting Crows' Joni Mitchell cover, etc.

SO, my point and question is:

If you could choose a song for Vanessa to cover for the upcoming release, what would it be?

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Penis Bone
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:59:52 am »
Here is an excerpt from a great interview (JT Leroy interviewing Nessa.)

JTL: So, I want you to tell the story about how you and Stephan got together.

VC: Oh, my God! Well, we were touring together two summers ago. I remember the first time I saw him: I was, like, on the computer or something, and he was walking in on the first day of tour. He had these black shades on, like wraparound sunglasses, and he was in all black, on his cell phone, walking with that swagger he has. And I was like, "Who is this guy?" He was always really nice. He brought me flowers and welcomed me to the tour, but I just felt suspicious of men in general at that point. He was trying, but it just wasn't happening. But your book Sarah was actually the catalyst for us starting to talk and eventually getting together. He gave me a copy of it, and suddenly I realized that he wasn't just some dumb-ass lead singer.
JTL: Because he comes across like that?
MC: Because he's good-looking, and he's over six feet tall.
JTL: And dudular.
VC: [laughs] Yeah, dudular. Then he came into my dressing room once, like weeks into the tour. He handed me this white, ivory necklace with a black cord, and I was like, "What is this? Now you're giving me gifts?" And he was like, "It's a raccoon penis bone." And I was like, "What? Why are you giving me this?" And then he gave me Sarah, and it immediately made me curious and comforted that he wanted to share things with me. I just thought that was so rare for the front man of a band to do. They just tend to be really one-dimensional.
JTL: And more likely to bring in a bottle of Wild Turkey or something like that.
VC: Exactly. But he brought me a book and a penis bone, and I was like, "Okay, I'll take note of this, and perhaps I'll give him some more chances." I give you all the credit. My album should be called Harmonium by J.T. LeRoy.
JTL: [laughs] I just want a piano lesson. Do you still have the raccoon penis bone?
VC: [laughs] Of course.

I don't know if someone has already posted this, so my apologies if they have. Read the rest of the interview at:

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1285/is_11_34/ai_n8586984

it's from the Harmonium era. It gives great insight into Vanessa's childhood and her learning the piano.

Hehe, raccoon penis bone. How romantic.  8O
I wonder what it really was..... but let's not turn this into a discussion on the anatomy of the penis.....      haha

I think it's cute in a quirky way

Introduce Yourself / Vanessa x Metallica= ???
« on: March 28, 2006, 06:41:42 pm »
Hi!

My name is Megan Jane, I'm from Adealide, South Australia, and I'm a musican. I sing, write songs, play guitar, piano, bass, and drums. My two main influences are the lovely Vanessa Carlton and my favourite band of all time, Metallica. I guess you could say that my own music is like a mixture of the two, but something original and different to both of those influences. I hope to record soon, so if anyone is intrigued by this concept, and/or would like to make a new friend, pm me.

 :) Thankyou friends
