It sounds like I'm the only person who isn't thrilled with the result.  I hesitate to even mention this.....but I do so respectfully of those who obviously do not share my opinion.

I was disappointed.  Here's my reasons:  I think of the darkness of the song, the black album cover, how great it would have been to do a goth-y vid for it, go maybe black and white, maybe undersaturate the colors?  I dunno,  I was hoping that it would really communicate the depth of the lyrics, the pain being felt(lyrical and otherwise).

It looks like there were some transfers of VC's old family films, some quick inserts shot at her apartment, everything dumped into Avid or Final Cut Pro and that was that.
I am fully aware that a video as a marketing tool is probably NOT money well-spent these days, especially as the market shrinks more and more.  To really do a killer video might have been kibboshed as too much of an expense.

To me, it's almost jarring how ill-fitting it is.  I just don't think the images match the sonic quality in any way.
Look, we all live with these songs and have our own images in our heads, so it's only my opinion, but I feel like this was a real missed opportunity.

But......if people are checking it out.....that's really all I care about. If people are hearing just how far Vanessa has come as an artist, the video could be a still of an old couch for 5 minutes and I'd be OK with it.

On a similar note, even if Vanessa does some electronic pop, I would not dismiss it out of hand.  I do not think she would waste our time.  It's a big risk, she could lose a lot of fans if she went all Ke$ha or worse on us.  She could gain more fans overall.  It's an interesting move if she does it.

I just re-listened the other day.  Still a good album.  Reminds me of some great times with some new friends, and, well, the big changes that were on the horizon.

I can't imagine VC singing something like Unsung today.  Seems like she has come so far!

Yup, Abe is on all of BNN, as well, including ATM.  Quite the studio guy, and amazing live drummer.  One of the many musicians I'd like to meet in my time.  He has played with SO many of my favorites.  Dude is the size of a sumo wrestler.

I take the song to be about where she is NOW.  It can change.  I mean, Gene Simmons just married Shannon Tweed after what, over two decades?

All of this could fall by the wayside if she meets that "someone", as it will for me should I decide to again(I was married once). When you're in love--really there--the decision can be incredibly clear.

I know married people who are happy.  I know people who just live together who are miserable.  There is no science to it.  I say, do what is good for YOU.

I see so many people who are influenced too much either by tradition or the so-called "progressive" bucking against it and never really look inward to find the truth and what truly works for them.  It is no one's beeswax except the people involved.

I dunno, IMO I feel that being married kicks everything into a different, higher gear than just living together.  It's like saying "I'm not in a BAND, I just play music with 3 or 4 other dudes", like where is the identity of the union?

Awesome.  A real live show(at least it was a few years ago when she did it).

Thanks for the heads-up!

Today was a day that cemented my fandom as well as friendship with a whole bunch of Nessaholics.  Great to see a lot of people still around, great to see drummer Nate Morton go on to kick major ass on CBS' Rock Star a few years ago, and now he is Cher's drummer in Vegas, but tonight was special for many, many reasons, not the least of which was VC had a full band as well as played SWINDLER.

The full show is out there, albeit recorded by someone in the audience.  Anyone else remember this show?

I really think V needs to release a B-sides album. She has soooooooooo much amazing material, it deserves to either be released as is or re-recorded and re-done in studio.

This.

She has at least one album, maybe two, of releaseable material that fans would love to have.  It would cost her nothing to re-record a few of those songs and throw in a few demos or even early live, unbootlegged tracks.

It would be awesome!  I don't know her, but I fear that she feels as if she has moved on from the early days and doesn't want to revisit old material.  No tracks held back from previous albums have ever showed up later.

Morning Sting is a good example of a song as good as anything she has released but just hasn't seen the light of day yet.
I assume that there would be no viable way to wrestle any masters away from the UMG years..................

Does anyone recall the name of the shipper? Mines is from "PAID INC. ".. but shouldn't Razor & Tie be shipping them? Just curious.

I ordered mine from VC.com and Topspin was the company I dealt with.  I'm sure this vinyl work was farmed out to a pressing plant somewhere and this company dealt with that....not sure how they accomplished the signing, though.

That article is more my language.

If there is anything you need explained, just ask.

For instance, they said they used Pro Tools to "slave" things. They didn't say what, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the backwards effects on Hear The Bells weren't made there(on PT), then recorded onto the 2" tape.  Recording things backwards on 2" tape would be a pain in the butt.

One thing that I'm surprised about is that no automation was used during mixing.
This means that "moves" need to be made to the faders while the 1/2" mixdown machine is rolling in real time.  Any mistakes mean having to re-do the whole song.  It wouldn't be unheard of for 2, 3 or 4 people to be standing over the board like expectant parents, waiting for JUST the right time to lift a fader or push a button.  I've been one of those people and it can be nuts.

ahh, it's just like doctors using medical speak.  LOL.  YOU understand it, but still, makes little sense to me.  what's the difference between different sized tapes anyway? what are faders?  All I know is it's a great freaking album and it sounds great so whatever they did was good by me.  :P

In terms of the size of tape, the wider it is, the better the quality is because the size of the individual tracks on the tape should be as large as possible.  The tape has to be 2" wide in order to sound good with 24 separate tracks.  Otherwise, the quality suffers.  Faders are the individual volume controls for each of the 24 tracks.  When you mix, you combine all 24 tracks together, balancing the vocals against bass, drums, guitars, keyboards, and any other parts that were recorded such as backing vocals or percussion. You also add effects like reverb(lots of that was used on Hear The Bells) or echo.

In the case of Rabbits, 24 tracks got mixed down to 2(stereo) on the 1/2" machine. There is an art to mixing.  Ideally, you want the vocals to be out front but not overly so, and you want the instruments to play a strong supporting role but not dominate.  So, the person in charge of mixing slides the faders up or down, controlling the volume of each instrument until a satisfying sound is achieved. You might imagine that this is complicated, and you'd be correct: each song requires HOURS to do a "final" mix.  It can be frustrating, grueling work, but at least to me, when it's done there is nothing more satisfying.

Vanessa Songs / Lyrics / Sheet Music / Re: Hear The Bells
« on: August 18, 2011, 10:49:17 pm »
Seems like 90 percent of what is on that track sounds like bells: the opening guitar part, the vocals, even some of the eerie stuff mixed way in the back could be the sound of far-off bells.  The drummer keeps time on a ride cymbal, but ironically it doesn't sound like he is playing on the bell of it.......go figure.

Little things that were done, like getting VC close to the mic in order to call attention to the "plosives" (hard consonant sounds like "c" and "p") are just awesome.  Strangely enough, this is what people try to AVOID in radio.

This track creeps me out a bit.

I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks now.  It's dark and huge-sounding.  I play it several times in a row when I listen to the album.  Easily one of the best tracks she's ever done.

That tour is real west coast heavy, isn't it?

Geez, I work within walking distance from Terminal 5.

No brainer!
