Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / Significant Others
« on: December 04, 2004, 01:45:46 pm »
This show is hi- f'in- larious.  It's on Bravo Sundays at 9 or 10, usually after The Actor's Studio.  It follows 3 couples who have been married for different lengths of time and all the crap they go through.  They're all crazy, if you ask me.  It's "unscripted" but you can tell the actors are guided.  Most of the improv is funny, but the set up plots are a little flat.  My favorite couple is Ethan and Elanor.

Completely Off-Topic / Someone you love
« on: November 11, 2004, 10:57:58 am »
Someone you love could be killed by a drunk driver.  It's not something people usually like to think about, or think about it at all.  But it happens, and it happened to three of my friends from highschool.  Three years ago, Emily, Katie and Rachel were intoxicated and walking back to campus from downtown.  A car pulled up and offered them a ride up the steep hill they were walking.  It was tradition on that particular campus to offer a ride up when it was dark and cold.  The three girls got in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, not realizing the driver himself was drunk.  The car hit a tree at 85 miles perhour, killing Katie, Emily and Rachel and the driver's best friend.  The driver survived.

I had to tell my mother and family that Rachel had passed, and it was the hardest thing i've ever had to do.  We were childhood friends and our moms are best friends.  i don't want other people to have to have to go through this.  Check out this link to the Rachel Foundation website to learn what we are all about.  We want to prevent tragedies like this one.

i sit on the committee for educating students about drinking and driving, and this is why i am posting it here.  I'm not trying to preach or condescend, just get the word out.

Someone you love could be killed by a drunk driver.  Please don't drink and drive.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / My Harmonium Review
« on: October 15, 2004, 08:29:45 pm »
I am reviewing Harmonium for my college newspaper, and after a very feeble attempt at a first draft and lots of editing, here's what I have so far.  Please give CONSTRUCTIVE feedback!  Thanks!

After 2 years out of the spotlight, "Harmonium" is Vanessa Carlton's follow up to her multiplatinum debut "Be not Nobody" which had the number 1 single "A Thousand Miles" and top 10 hit "Ordinary Day." The first single off "Harmonium," "White Houses," is currently climbing the Hot 100 and Billboard Charts at a rapid pace. With this reemergence, some say that Vanessa is back and better than ever, while die hard fans claim she never left.

Like the songs on "Be not Nobody," the piano is the main instrument and key element to the music on "Harmonium." Backed up by a full orchestra, electric and acoustic guitar, brass, and sometimes a 40 voice choir, the myriad of piano arpeggios and infectious hooks result in a sound that is at times hypnotic, chilling, and haunting. The most stand out aspect on "Harmonium" is Vanessa's obvious growth as a writer and lyricist. Teaming with boyfriend/producer Stephen Jenkins (from the band Third Eye Blind) each piece of music is written as a personal narrative or vingette.

The first track on the album, "White Houses," tells the story of one girl's coming of age experiencs that all happens in white houses over the summer. "White Houses" addresses the changes girls go through between the ages of 16 and 20, like feelings of jealousy toward a friend and losing her virginity.

"Annie" is a bittersweet reflection on a visit Vanessa had with a real life fan named Victoria. Touched by the bravery of the little girl dying of Lukemia, Carlton expresses her admiration through the lyrics "you're so fine the way you stand up to your fears...I'd give my bones for you to get a few more years..."

Infectious hooks in other songs like "Private Radio" and "San Francisco" that address topics of insomnia and a love affair in the city make these tunes not only catchy, but relatable.

"Harmonium" has a very raw and dressed down feel with more personal and dark lyrics than her previous album. The hidden track, "The Wreckage" is exemplory of this darker style. Strictly piano/vocal, the diminished chords match the sentiment of the lyrics about autocide. The song "Half a Week Before the Winter" shows Vanessa's dabblings in the existential and esoteric writing style, allowing the listerner to attribute his or her own meanings to the symbols of unicorns and vampires in the lyric.

Aside from Jenkins, Vanessa worked with an array of guest artists on this record.  Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks from the band Fleetwood Mac, Pharrell, and Kayne West lended their talents to Harmonium in a number of ways. By playing and singing backup or co-producing a track, these collaborations add another facet to the originality of Harmonium.

It is apparent that "Harmonium" is an expression of Vanessa's personal growth in the two years since the success of "A Thousand Miles" and "Be not Nobody." Fans of Vanessa, or "NESSAholics," have been waiting over 2 years for new material, dealing with months of release date pushbacks by her label, Interscope. Yet, it is true that good things come to those who wait. "Harmonium" comes with a making of documentary called "Pleased to Meet You," and a 30 minute intimate concert/Q&A session with a select group of fans filmed last December.

Vanessa is bringing the songs of "Harmonium" on the road, headlining a month long US tour, and continuing in Europe and Asia early next year. Harmonium drops Nov. 9, and the single "White Houses" can be heard on a radio near you.

Completely Off-Topic / A little iPod help...
« on: August 02, 2004, 07:32:52 pm »
so my iPod finally came in today and yay I was really excited. I went to download iTunes because the one I got didn't come with anything. Surprise, iTunes will only download to computers running Windows 2000 or XP. What do I have? Windows Millenium Edition. So can I actually put songs on my iPod? NO!  I was on the phone with customer support and the guy was really nice about it when he told me unless I have 2000 or XP I was basically screwed.  I need to weigh my options now.  Do I spend more money and upgrade my comp to XP, or should I try and find out if there's anything else I can do with what I have?  Any suggestions?

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Nate has joined Maria Mena!
« on: July 08, 2004, 05:06:18 pm »
My old room mate is doing an internship at Jive records, which is Maria Mena's label.  My friend found out that Nate, our favorite drummer, has left Vanessa's tour band and will now be playing with Maria.  I was looking forward to seeing him on tour this fall!  Apparently, Maria has also (to use her words) "stolen" Michelle Branch's guitar player and keyboardist.  If anyone has met Nate, they'll know he's the nicest and sweetest guy and will be missed on tour.

There are 2 words for this guy.  Pure genious.  He's the writer and director who did The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs.  Now he has a new movie, The Village, that looks to be outstanding.  I love his work for so many reasons (other than the fact he casts Joaquin Phoenix.  Yum.) His use of color, camera angles, cinemetography, music, suspense, dialogue...  Anyone else a fan?

Check out http://thevillage.movie.go.com  it's got movie info and hidden extras.

Creative Endeavors / Poems
« on: March 11, 2004, 07:50:33 pm »
I normally don't visit this forum often, but I thought I'd share two poems I wrote while I was in Belize and Guatemala studying Mayan ruins and modern day Central America.  the first one doesn't have a title yet.

The wrought iron fence divides
glistening mansion and thatched shack
in a third world,
a broken world.
Broken words and broken hearts
cached like broken pottery
in a forgotten world,
a stolen world.
Stolen land and stolen dreams
can not be recovered
regardless of apologies.
Bare skin on bare bones
bleached in Carribean sun
go to see the promises that lie
just beyond the mountains.

"Templo"
The dark, still, silent giant
keeps watch over sacred village.
Sharp edges cut through the thick humidity
like knives.
Canopy of green conceals within
delights of the jungle forest.
Howling, it opens up to us
as we begin our decent to the floor.
Birds laught as muscles burn,
scream for relief.
We walk through the ghosts of ritual and rite,
of a lost but not forgotten tradition.
Immortal giant made of stone and sweat
looming in the East,
the constant reminder of the passage of time.

This guy is all the rage in Belize.  If you like reggae and rosta music you'll love him.  I'm not sure if you can find a CD import at Best Buy or something, but go to Kazza or search engine he'll come up.  I didn't buy a CD while I was there because it was wicked expensive but you couldn't walk into a bar or restaurant or shop without hearing his stuff.  He definately gives Sean Paul a run for his money.

Who is it and why.

Mine is Peppermint Patty because she's all women's lib and wears jeans and calls Charlie Brown "chuck."  I also like Sally because she's quick witted and I just like saying "Sweet baboo" to Linus.

Completely Off-Topic / Rate My Professor.com
« on: December 03, 2003, 08:33:48 am »
Anyone been to this site?  You find your college/university and there's a list of prof's that students have added and rated.  You can add your own ratings and comments too.  It's kind of fun reading what other students think and knowing which prof's have the bad reputations.  I think our Student Association is hosting a debate about if the site is useful or not.  I think it's pretty cool but don't take it too seriously, it's a lot like hotornot.com or something like that.
