Polls / How do you drink a 40?
« on: June 05, 2005, 12:17:31 am »

How do you, personally, drink a 40?  For those of you that don't know, a 40 is a 40-ounce (1183 mL) bottle of beer (or malt liquor) that's like tree and a turd regular beers in one bottle.  It's much cheaper than buying three individual beers, and usually easier to transport.

So here's for getting everyone's input on their preferred way to consume one. 8)

I pose this question because I heard the expression used today.  I just need someone to put this into perspective for me. :?

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / What is this song?
« on: June 02, 2005, 10:05:21 am »
This is Vanessa Carlton, playing a bit of a song that I can't identify.  If anyone can tell me what it is, I'll save you my last donut. :D

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / "Who's to Say" on KF99!
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:16:50 am »
Last night I was almost home from work flipping through stations because what I had been listening to really started to suck, and I heard familiar-sounding piano on KF99, a local Top-40 station.  I stopped and it was "Who's to Say"!  I had to sit in the driveway for a couple minutes till it was done. :D It's the first time I've heard it on the radio, and I listen to the radio all the time!  Is this the new single?

Completely Off-Topic / Names of British Coins
« on: April 29, 2005, 05:33:42 am »
Over the past several weeks, thanks to both my uncle who was flown to London to inspect a machine for his company and to TRINIST who sent me some to cover the postage for his Nashville concert CDs, I have a small collection of of British coins, and I know the British are known for their slang names for everything, so I'm wondering what are common names for the circulating coins in the U.K., other than just 10p, 20p, &c, like, I know the half-pound coin (50 pence) replaced a tenbob note, and the 5p coin is the equivalent of the shilling; the one I'm most interested in is the 20p because I don't know what to call it - 20p seems so awkward, and it's certainly not a quarter - so other than the seemingly logical "fourbob", does it have a common name?

Completely Off-Topic / Music Festival Dilemma
« on: April 11, 2005, 11:23:56 am »
I have a problem.  I'm going to the Beale Street Music Festival in less than three weeks and I have a decision to make and I'm asking for your help (since nearly everyone on here is, to some degree, a music expert because they have joined a Vanessa Carlton fansite! ;) )

Friday night from 8 to 9 p.m., all three of these are playing:  Seether, Gavin DeGraw, and Switchfoot.  Since I'm not really big on either one of them, it doesn't really matter to me which one I go to.  So, I'm open to suggestions.

BUT WAIT......THAT'S NOT ALL!!!

Here's my real big dilemma:  Jerry Lee Lewis and Pinetop Perkins are playing on different stages at the same time (well, almost - they do overlap by a scheduled 25 minutes, with Mr. Perkins starting first.  Now know this, Pinetop is 92 years old and Jerry Lee is 69.  I've seen Jerry Lee before at this same festival just last year, and I was front-row, standing against the rail.  The weather was horrible!  Because of the cold wind and unmerciful rain, I was down with a moderate case of hypothermia by night's end.  But I digress.  Pinetop Perkins is one of the last of the original Mississippi bluesmen still living, let alone still able to play.  But I promised I would see Jerry Lee Lewis again because the bad conditions resulted in an abbreviated (and much-delayed) performance.  I've already checked both of their upcoming dates and found nothing scheduled that I'd be able to attend:  They're both headed for the Middle Atlantic coast and then off to Switzerland and France, respectively.  This would be my only opportunity (possibly this year) to see either of them, and perhaps my only chance to see Pinetop Perkins ever.  Is my solution becoming too obvious?  Either way, I'm open to input.

The recording I mentioned two weeks ago is finally ready!  This is a VCD of Vanessa's entire concert at the Exit/In in Nashville, including some clips of tuning and soundcheck before the show and the autograph signing after the show.  (Sorry, there wasn't enuff tape for Ari Hest.)  I'm going to try to make an Audio CD version soon.  This VCD is in NTSC format, so probably only people in the U.S., Canada, and most other parts of the Americas will be able to view this.  (I'm going to be working on a PAL format version soon also.)

If you're interested in a copy, please PM me.  I'm only asking for the cost of packing and postage.

I thought I would open up this discussion since I haven't seen it yet as a thread of its own, and I would be really interested to read other addicts' views on the subject (of the theme in her songs, not necessarily on death itself.)  For example, songs like "Little Mary", "She Floats", "The Wreckage", "Annie", and "Twilight" all have clear death content in them.

"Little Mary" is about a girl who feels she has to be perfect to live and is, therefore, seriously considering suicide.  "She Floats" is about a girl who may very well be dead because she is so ghostlike.  "The Wreckage" focusses on the power to kill other people on the highway that another driver has.  "Annie" is about a girl dying of a disease.  And, at least to me, "Twilight" represents that line a person can feel forced to cross when depression takes the best of them.

I welcome other holics' comments on what I've said, as well as other views and other songs that share this theme, if in whole or in part.

Completely Off-Topic / Circuit City closing 19 stores!
« on: February 18, 2005, 08:51:04 am »
I'm sure many of you have already caught the story.  Apparently some of the markets where Circuit City has stores aren't strong enuff to support them, so they're going out of business.  That works out well for me because in less than an hour and a half, their going out of business sale starts and I already have picked out the DV camera I'm going to be pilng on to.

Completely Off-Topic / Warning: eBay scam
« on: January 30, 2005, 11:49:15 pm »
I'm not one to usually post stuff like this, but I'm concerned for some of you who might slip up once not paying attention.  There is a scam coming through email aimed at stealing eBay account information.  Here is a message I received yesterday:

Dear eBay member,

We at eBay are sorry to inform you that we are having problems with
the billing information of your account. We would appreciate it if you
would visit our eBay Billing Center and fill out the proper
information that we are needing to keep you as an eBay member. If you don't comply until the 30st January 2005, your eBay membership may be suspended, or even deleted.

Click here to complete our web form.

As outlined in our User Agreement, eBay will periodically send you
information about site changes and enhancements. Visit our Privacy
Policy and User Agreement if you have any questions.

Thank you!

This message has all the genuine eBay logos, and the link at "Click here to complete our web form." takes me to here:

http://www.190.sy/helpdesk_en/setup/

a page on a Syrian website which looks remarkably like the real eBay sign-in page:

https://signin.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?SignIn&ssPageName=h:h:sin:US

enough that you might not notice and enter your real user ID and password and unknowingly sign it all away to these people.

I was first suspicious because eBay doesn't need my billing information anyway since I'm not an eBay seller, and second I noticed their English was not very good:  "If you don't comply until the 30st January 2005..."  So I decided to check it out, and sure enough, it's a scam.

Here's how you can tell a fake:

1. First of all, eBay sent you a message when you first signed up that said they will not send you a message like this one asking for this information.
2. Make sure you are at an ebay.com address before entering any eBay-related information.
3. Before entering any passwords or personal information anywhere, eBay included, make sure the site is secure.  There will be a lock icon at the bottom right of your screen, and, in most browers, your address bar will turn peach.  Also look for the address to begin with "https://".

Completely Off-Topic / Someone in Australia: I need help!
« on: January 26, 2005, 01:14:08 pm »
I'm trying to order an item from Sanitarium that's apparently only available to people in Australia.  I'm needing someone who can send it to me in the States if I have it sent to them.  I'll be glad to send them back their expense for overseas postage via International Money Order as soon as it arrives.  Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Completely Off-Topic / Your plans for Thanksgiving!
« on: November 23, 2004, 10:58:40 am »
As most of you know, we're about to celebrate Thanksgiving in America, an observance traditionally traced to a dinner that English immigrants had with a Native American tribe in Massachusetts in 1621 to give thanx about a year after the English Pilgrims landed there.

I want to share our plans for the day and the weekend with all of you and hear what yours are.

Polls / Reasoning test
« on: November 17, 2004, 09:13:36 am »
You get one piece of fruit with the box lunch.  You can have either a banana or a plum.  You have chosen a plum.

Select the conclusion based on valid reasoning.

1. You can have a banana too.
2. You cannot have a banana too.
3. There is not enough information to make a sound conclusion.

Polls / Which U.S. dollar do you prefer?
« on: November 15, 2004, 11:31:00 am »
As most of you know, there are currently two forms of the U.S. dollar in general circulation.  They are as follows:

The Sacagawea "golden" dollar, first issued in 2000:

The Washington dollar note, first issued in 1928:

Most countries, such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, no longer have a note for the $1 or £1 denomination as it has been completely replaced by a coin.  My question for my fellow NESSAholics is, which do you prefer, and what would you like to see done in the future?  (Please indicate in your reply what country you're from.)
