Completely Off-Topic / protect marriage?

protecting marriage makes it seem as if marriage as an institution is a sacred, special bond.
which it used to be.
but as long as the church can pretend like Britney Spears' 54-hour marriage never existed cause it was a drunk mistake (read: annulment), then that doesn't sound very holy to me. I'd like to think marriage is sacred, but if you're going to corrupt the general definition in some areas you may as well rewrite the whole thing.

I can understand what you're saying.  The problem is that it's not fair to try to rewrite it for everybody, because it is still sacred to a number of people.

I'm not going to tell anyone what to do with their own lives, but just don't try to force your opinions on me.  That's who I am, and if I can't be that, then we have a problem. :D

Do you mean you are against same sex marriage (I'm a bit confused by this thread as I don't know what the "protect marriage" thing is....)? What is your opinion?

I don't know what "protect marriage" would mean because so many straight couples get divorced...

I think what people usually mean by protecting marriage is keeping it between a man and a woman.

Let me explain my position on the matter.  I do not personally intend to take any action against same-sex marriages.  I do not intend to ever be involved in one.  But please don't ask me to recognize one because it really doesn't make any more difference whether or not I recognize one marriage than it does another.

For example:  There are two men in a second-floor apartment just west of downtown Boston who have been living together for eight years, and now they just got married in a legal ceremony this summer.  There is a man and a woman who have been married for over twenty years living in a white vinyl-siding house on W. Maple St. in Livonia, Mich.

Doesn't either one of those marriages make any difference to me, and neither couple should care whether I think their marriage is right or wrong.  What I believe would be wrong would be for either of them to try to ram their opinion into my ear as if it would make me a better person for agreeing with them.  The couple from Michigan probably wouldn't do that, but that couple in Boston are a vocal pair.

My point is that other people are free to do as it pleases them.  I'm not going to stop them, but they shouldn't count on my approval because they don't need it.

On the other hand, the people who are against same-sex marriage have just as much right to speak their opinions and to be heard as anyone else.  This is America, and that's how it works.

Polls / Is Hannah Montana evil?
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:38:29 pm »
Although I have to admit the Hannah Montana merchandising segment is a HUGE market, I don't think Hannah Montana's message is "Buy my stuff."  Instead, I really see it as "Follow your dreams."  Hannah Montana seems to me to be a source of positive encouragement wrapped up in an entertaining (and at times, plumb farcical) show.  Her songs, though very "Disney Channel" sounding, are musically quite clever, and the lyrics are generally encouraging.  I personally take the character to be a positive, albeit humanly imperfect, roll model.  How is that evil?

But thanks for the input!

Yup! And was dissapointed with the 4th book. Ending my obsession.

The person after me will have their phone stolen!

It would be rather nice because it would give me a definite reason to get my new one right now instead of waiting until we get our mother-in-law paid back the money we owe her for making our house payment last month when I didn't have a job.  Gee, that sucked.

Anyway, the person after me either loves or hates Marmite.  No in-betweens.

Completely Off-Topic / What's with all the short hair haters!?
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:29:21 pm »
I understand completely.  I know a few girls who really don't look anything out of the ordinary, but there's just a beauty about them I can't deny.  I can't imagine Vanessa with short hair myself.  That is something someone would have to show me.  I'm not sure how she'd look, having never seen her that way, but I have to admit I'll have a decided prejudice against it at least until I do.  I also can't really imagine Shannon with short hair, at least no shorter than maybe right at or right above the collarbone, and fluffed out a little.  Though that would be cute, but I love her long hair, and I think it really suits her face.

Don't get mad about it, or you may be denying someone else their right to be themselves. :D

I don't get what you said.  I tried to make sense of it but found it impossible.

Ok. :D

don't really hate short hair, but I just think that at least 68% of girls and women don't look their best with it. I have seen a few really cute short haircuts, but it just looks wrong on most.

 :2guns:
If i remember correctly, you made a comment about me when I first posted my pic here that wasn't complimentary... (a long time ago, something about not liking short hair on women) so I guess you must think I look "wrong".  Oh well, every person has their own opinion. Someone out there probably thinks you look wrong. Someone would think Vanessa looks wrong even though us fans in general think she looks wonderful.

I may have said that.  Most of the time it does look wrong.  Maybe at the time I just thought you would've looked better with it a little longer.  Maybe I was ill that day.  Either way, I certainly didn't mean to bash you.  And you're right, someone probably does think I look wrong.  They haven't told me directly, but I'm sure everybody looks wrong to someone, as if there is something about every person that someone out there would like to change.  Whether or not it's their business, I can't say.  Most of the time it's probably not, but then people do ask for opinions and comments sometimes.

I'll admit that I'm a long-hair fan myself.  I may not be able to pin down exactly why, but I do find it (generally) more attractive and pleasant to look at.  But maybe it doesn't matter to most people what I think.  I'm sure you're not trying to impress me, so you certainly shouldn't let what I say get in your way.  But I am sorry if I sounded rude or disdainful with my first comment all that time ago.

I am now the proud owner of an orange 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT. Albeit only 1:24 scale, but the hood and doors open and the wheels turn. :D

« on: October 02, 2008, 08:12:39 pm »
I'm prompted to ax this because the other night my cousin called her Satan. I tried to suggest that perhaps he was thinking of another current Disney star, and though he claimed to know the one I was referring to, I wasn't specific and I don't intend to suggest that any living Disney star is the devil incarnate.

But I'm just wanting to get other people's input and buttholes - I mean opinions - on the matter.  How do you feel? Why do you feel that way?  Try not to include your butthole - I mean opinion  - about Miley Cyrus herself, but rather limit it to Hannah Montana the imaginary pop star, the television show, and the Hannah Montana franchise as a whole.

that's cool. its always nice to be able to talk to your heroes, I talk to Kerli quite frequently.

I don't think he's a douche for those answers, i just think the way he worded them became a little controversial here because if read a certain way they might sound a little cocky, but you can't please everyone. :)

THANK YOU for being nice. I really appreciate it.
If you knew about him as much as I do (creepy, yes.) then you would know he's absolutely the least cocky celebrity out there.
He didn't have a lot of time to answer the questions as all of them were coming up like, 10 questions for every 2 seconds, no exaggeration.

Ok, well now I understand why his answers were so short.  I wasn't trying to be mean before...I just thought if I were you, I would've been disappointed.  I'm glad you weren't, though.

Well thank you so much for your apology. But nutnlp called him a douche. NOT nice.

Douche is just the French word for shower. What's so bad about that? :D

Haha, but what it's meant when you call people that, is actually a shorter term for something else. Just not a very nice thing to call someone.

Yes, I know, but now I'm wondering if anybody is now going to try to use the phrase, "Dude, you're such a shower." 8)
