The soldiers who did things WRONG were going AGAINST US POLICY.  They are being TRIED for it!  They are going to JAIL for it!

We didn't condone it, it wasn't policy and no one thinks it's OK.

It's still happening. And it's not that "no one" thinks it's okay, it's that "no one" who is capable of doing something about it will actually take charge. The soldiers don't even view those people as people; talk to a soldier who doesn't have some psychological disorder (due to their service in the war) and listen to his perspective: "The only people that matter are Americans." APATHY. They don't CARE. And to say that there's just a select few soldiers who commit these awful, awful acts is unbelievably ignorant. It happens every day. Why do you think the number of civilian deaths is SUBSTANTIALLY higher than all soldiers (US, Al-qaida, etc.) combined? There's obviously shit going on over there and regardless if it's considered a war crime, it's still wrong; beings that once lived don't anymore. And you can honestly say that it's okay? Or that it's justified because it's not been declared a war crime? "War crime" is redundant. No one deserves to die, and all war is wrong.

Also, someone with no citizenship has no rights so it's pretty much impossible for us to breach the basic rights of anyone held at Guantanamo.

It's not just people with "no citizenship" (and our concept and definition of "citizenship" is totally distorted and fucked up to meet our gross economic, capitalist standard and to secure the power of those currently in power - don't you know about the Jim Crow Laws?), they're American people, too. Post-9/11 America: ask (if you know someone who ALMOST kind of maybe possibly in a way looks middle-eastern) them how they were treated after September 11. I promise it wasn't nice.

They teach the Catholic church's catechism and, I'm assuming with St. X's weird, cigar-smoking, conservative background, don't give a shit, either. They can teach it, but VERY FEW of their students focus on it. The catechism has nothing to do with acceptance or tolerance, it's the Church's law.

I don't know. All I'm waiting for is empathy. If you had been taught all your life that your religion was the only acceptable one (which I think, as Catholics, we both have) and you 100% believed that those who didn't agree were wrong and you had the ability to take action, you would do it. Start at the root of terrorism is all I'm saying. Figure out why these people are doing this and stop it. Don't imprison innocent Hindu people in Cuba . . .

Know what you're talking about before you criticize someone else's side of an argument. Your epitomization of the story includes thorough, factual information of the Magdalene Scandals as to the extent that, "Yeah, Hitler killed a couple Jews because he could," does the Holocaust justice. (NOTE: I'm not saying that the Church's recent UK scandal is near as horrific as the Holocaust, though both were awful.)

Any killing of civilians is accidental casualties, and the US army isn't even involved in raids ATM. Maybe you missed it, but security is the responsibility of the Iraqi army now. We're there for support.

So fellow Louisvillian, assuming that you do actually read the newspaper and - like most people - aren't talking out of your ass, I'm going to say you read the article one or two weeks ago about the American soldiers on trial. (Not those soldiers, and no, not those either, or those, not that massacre, etc. Am I right? So you are aware that they raided a village, claimed most the people there were terrorists, so they bombed the city. You already know about that though; I'm sure you do. Not to mention the four examples I gave prior to this post, told to me by a veteran of the Iraq War. Yes, my sources are very unreliable . . .

Continuing the relevant discussion, what do you suppose we do to "stop terrorism" considering that - because it IS our reason for being in Iraq - the WAR ON TERROR (surprisingly, might I add  :roll: ) didn't do such a thing? Additionally, we're in the process of figuring out a way to pull out (not the birth control method, Benedict), so obviously it didn't work. Maybe killing thousands and thousands and thousands of innocent people doesn't end terrorism and is in fact terrorism in itself. Who would've thought?

More than I can count. (Don't you know there's a war going on?) And that's not even restricted to religious leaders! Raping fifteen-year-old girls after forcing her to watch you shoot every member of her family in the back of the head and then catching her house on fire . . . Shooting puppies for fun . . . Literally beating the shit out of men you THOUGHT were planting land mines . . . Raiding villages and killing eight civilians, including a ten-year-old boy . . . Shooting limbs off POWs for fun . . . Taking away their rights.

All for democracy?

Muslims just get a bad reputation. They're no different than we are; they have just as many fundamentalists as Christianity does . . . we've perceived everything totally incorrectly. We've grown partial and, unfortunately, prejudice, and extremely stereotypical. As for Mohammed, no, he wasn't a great guy, but that's not to say that only Islam produces such people. The radicals today, killing nuns and blowing up churches, do they not have the same mentality as those - no more than fifty years ago - burning churches in "colored" areas? Secondly, for Benedict XVI to have read a post-Crusades document, quoting a CHRISTIAN EUROPEAN (shortly after THE CRUSADES) on MUSLIMS . . . terribly one-sided. It would be like the pope, five-hundred years from now, quoting a radically conservative Christian American fundamentalist on Muslims. Did people really expect no reaction? Not that it's justified, but more understood.

The only difference between them and us is 1) unconditional hospitality and mercy to everyone (they) encounter and 2) it's okay for us to wear shorts in public.

Just like our views on the middle-east . . . Go to a local Kroger (stereotypically, a Wal-Mart customer's response is too predictable), but go to Kroger and ask anyone what an Muslim is and I guarantee you they'll either say, "A crazy person," or, "We should be killing them" (ie some stupid shit).

Go to an authentic local bazaar, however many thousands of miles away it would be, and ask anyone what an American is. The response is the same.

If someone had verbally attacked the pope, he or she would not be seen again. I guarantee that. The public probably won't ever find out. But that offender would be gone.

If you like them, then listen to The Postal Service; the lead singer of Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis, isn't the FIRST backup singer in The Postal Service (ie, she's not the girl in "Nothing Better"), but she is with them. They're tight.

But Will, the government that MAKES the laws does not see the fetus as a child. How can they make a law based on flawed and incorrect constitutional statements?

It would be different if the US recognized the fetus as a person, however, it does. In Roe vs. Wade this is stated. Bush has set up a program giving unfortunate soon-to-be mothers the finances to bear a child and to keep the fetus healthy in her womb. Supposedly, the Administration is "concerned" about the health of mothers and their children; however, when the child is born, all financial assistance is taken away.

Why would the leaders of our country take away aids such as that when a woman obviously needs for her child? If they have enough compassion in the beginning and during pregnancy for the child and mother, they care, right? WRONG. It's very simple: America (excuse me, the United States) has become material patrons of egoism. In that sense, we are focused on two sole things: money and power. When you gain power, you gain money, and all Republicans are happy. The majority of Americans originally (when Bush was first elected) based their political opinions on two things: "The War on Terror" (how much bullshit do we deal with daily?) and abortion. Getting "rid" of abortion (that actually means not letting wannabe aristocrats find out about it) with this plan to make sure pregnant women are physically and financially fit to raise a child makes all oblivious, rich men believe that this abortion "epidemic" is coming to an end; our great president is finally finding a solution! Well, he is, except after the child - the child that our leaders care about so very much - is born, they say, FUCK YOU! FUCK YOUR BASTARD CHILD! AND FUCK YOU FOR BEING STUPID AND UNCHRISTIAN-LIKE, UNLIKE JESUS, AND FOR HAVING SEX! (What they don't know is Jesus did have sex.)

It's a subtle way to make everyone believe there's a solution for abortion. Then, because these men from Texas who enjoy shooting each and endangered birds, are voted into office because they've knocked one of the US' most controversial issues out. Then they gain power. And secretly make money. Under the table, always, like college basketball.

The hardest thing a mother ever has to do is give up her child; however, because she is a mother (NOT a father) she does whatever is necessary to protect her child. Men will never understand. Adoption is imagining your child with another family. Abortion is having no other option.

Feel sympathy, not resentment, for the women who have to give up their child because they're stuck and have no other option. Try something new as Americans: have empathy.

Have you read all books in The Chronicles of Narnia? 'The Magician's Nephew' is the best (the first, with the creation of Narnia, etc.), but I mean . . . Let me cry until I can't anymore when Asland dies for that DUMBASS kid. I understand he was needed to fulfill the prophecy, but if I was that lion (which, I AM a lion), I'd have kicked the shit out of someone.

When I saw the movie, it reminded me of a Lord of the Rings, Jr. But that's because Lewis and Tolkien were BFFs and wrote a lot of shit together, and while having the same muses and influences. I don't know. I'm fascinated by random things.

PS I like the allusions to Atlantis in 'The Magician's Nephew'.
