Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / A Clockwork Orange
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:03:27 pm »
by Anthony Burgess - has anyone read it?

I finished it the other day - very very good, but i'm still not sure if i like the ending or not.

When it was first published, the US editor cut off the final chapter that Burgess had, however it was published in full for the rest of the world. In 1986 it was published in the US in full - 21 chapters - which is what i read. the reason the last chapter was cut in the first place was because the US editor didn't think that it fit the rest of the novel - which i can see. but i also think that it serves some purpose - it does give some closure.

any thoughts on the ending from anyone? or the work as a whole?

I haven't seen the movie, from what i've heard it's pretty messed up, but then again so is the book. I highly suggest it to those who don't mind decoding slang :-P

Saw them open for Dashboard...they have a very different sound from dashboard, but they're a really really cool band. not sure how to describe them...they're like a mesh between techno and emo, if that makes sense at all :-P

http://thecomas.com/

they're awesome live. their cd is really good, but they're the kind of band that when you see them play live the songs take on a completely different life than it does just on a cd.

I saw her open for Ben Jelen this past Sunday, she's AMAZING. she's so awesome live, she puts everything she has in to her performances and then some. Her songs are really good - she plays the guitar, piano, and violin. Her vocal range is awesome - she can go from really sweet and melodic to really raspy and rocky.

you can download some of her songs on her site. they're all really good, but i highly suggest Astropop, Supergirl, And She Was, and Always.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Vanessa In New Teen Vogue
« on: July 21, 2004, 06:52:16 pm »
first on page 64, for horoscopes. she's the "celebrity leo" there's a pic of her and underneath it says: In true fashion, Vanessa Carlton secured her spot in the limelight and at the top of the charts with the tremendous success of her first album. Whether she's rocking a subdued black dress or a more outlandish outfit of dark denim and lace, this fiery songstress is always turning heads"

and then again on page 118 under "People Are Talking About Music" it has a pic of her, i think the one from the OD single, the one with the flower in her hair, and underneath it says: "if my last record was wearing a dress: this record is wearing a tank top and jeans," says Vanessa Carlton with a laugh. "That's kind of a cool way to sum it up." With the help of her boyfriend Stephan Jenkins, Vanessa says she got less fancy and more spontaneous on Harmonium (A & M), her second album, by recording in more of a rock vein. And lyrically, Vanessa says, she's matured: "You kind of grow out of the writing-in-your-diary stage. There's a period in a woman's life when you go through all these transitions at once, and I'm just coming out of that"

Oh, how i heart this band :-P they're classified as "jangle-pop" - kind of like a modern beatles only not british. They're SO awesome, their song At The Wake is one of my all time favorite songs.

they released their debut cd a few months ago, i got it in the beginning of the month and i haven't stopped listening to it! the songs i recommend are:

At The Wake
Wait Wait Wait
Sore Thumb
Tie The Rope
I'm Ready, I am
The First Single
Closer
Lets Make This Moment A Crime

Creative Endeavors / In Progression
« on: July 06, 2004, 02:30:45 pm »
just wrote it like 2 seconds ago, so please be kind :-P

In Progression

i turned up the radio
we've been singing the same bitter song
so sweetly now for what seems like
much too long.

i'll change a note
the chord progression
the next verse to our demise
clashing voices and breaking apart
You can be the harmonies.

and this sound studio grew too small
our voices never got the chance to grow.
you never sang strong enough anyways,
and i always gave too damn much.

the bridge is battered
our abab pattern turned around.
well who cares if it never makes it to the radio,
we'll keep singing in silence
until the white sound fades and we're left standing there
with pathetic lyrics and a broken guitar string,
the perfect image of Kurt Cobain in your eyes.
I guess we all can't smell like teen spirit.

i'm too grunge for pop, you say
too badass for any of that shit.
and we're too sorry to keep on caring,
too sorry for anyone else to care.
well, that's the music industry for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------

as always, criticism is more than welcomed  :)  (constructive, of course   )

I can't find out too much about this band except that they're from New Jersey. I found out about them from the Straylight Run Yahoo group, they only have one song out for downloading, but it's really good! If you like SLR, TBS, STD, basically the whole Emo family, then you'll like this group

their official website is  here but theres pretty much nothing to it. you can check out their song Funeral Masses here.
