You know I haven't seen any of the heart wrenching tear jerking olympic stories yet which makes the olympics so wonderful, and makes them a celebration of humanity!!!
I agree, Zena! Where are the great stories? I swear Australia was chock full of 'em.
Remember that guy from the African nation who volunteered to compete in a swimming event for his country's Olympic team and learned to swim only 9 months prior to the games in a pond of some kind near his home? The man did not dive into the water gracefully, and had no kind of recognizable stroke. He took twice as long to finish as all of the swimmers from the other countries. As he struggled to finish his laps, the mostly Australian audience at the swimming center got on their feet and cheered him on like he was about to win the gold medal!
::wipes tear from eye::
This athlete's story was brought up again during the American coverage of the Opening Ceremonies. Bob Costas commented that the swimmer might not be competeing this year in Athens because he was having trouble getting to Greece due to his lost passport photo. Hearing the man's story again made me teary eyed, and then hearing that he probably wasn't even going to get to swim again made me even more upset. :cry:
