Not to derail.... but I understand the point Rosie and the European's are making.  Yes, we give the most $$$ in the world.  But we don't give a large % of what we make.  If you do your biblical research, it's not about how much you give, it's about how much you give relative to how much you could afford to give.  Since we claim to be a Christian based nation, I don't see how we can take some Christian ideals but not all of them.

I agree... but, since the Government is not an individual and has no prospect of an afterlife, it's really a non-issue.  Leave it in the hands of the churches and private orgs where it belongs... then that standard fully applies.

Didin't you see on the news?!?  It is to "take revenge from the British Zionist Crusader Government in retaliation for the massacres Britain is committing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jihad Jihad Jihad, death to the pale faces..."  (Ok I made the last part up...)

Or so says the "The Secret Organisation of al Qaida in Europe"

Not to be confused with "The Incredibly Upfront and Forthcoming Organisation of al Qaida in Europe" who's operations seems to be not so successful...

(This claim seemed to tick off the Peoples Front of Judea... not to be confused with the Popular People's Front... those splitters!!)

OK.. good to know Rosie should be ok...

One thing I've learned though is that is amazing how people end up in the strangest places where you don't expect them to be...  so hopefully we hear from folks, even if they weren't supposed to be there.

Oooh it was SO good to finally see footage of Dave Matthews Band live! I had been hoping to see it for such a long time! Madonna cannot sing for toffee. I hope this actually changes things though and makes Bush see he shouldn't just do 'what is right for america' (as he said on his ITN interview tonight).

*insert eye roll here*  Geldoff and Live8 took enough flack from non-US sources to even remotely attach some GWBush argument to it.

But, as an FYI.... the UK is 4th on the list of foreign aid givers.  The US is #1 with the next closest country, Japan, giving less than 1/2 of the US's total amount of foreign aid.  Sure it may not compare to the overall GDP of the US, but quite frankly, a US dollar that is part of .16% GDP buys the same amount as a dollar that is part of .85%  The whole debate is what people outside the US think the US SHOULD be giving.  Those people should now be fine equine dentists with as much as they are looking at that gift horse's mouth.  None of this takes into account the private donations to charities and religious organizations, where again, the US is at the top of the list.

Quote from: "Dr. Carol Adelman, Aid and Comfort, Tech Central Station, 21 August 2002"
...Even though the charts above do show US aid to be poor (in percentage terms) compared to the rest, the generosity of the American people is far more impressive than their government.

International giving by US foundations: $1.5 billion per year
Charitable giving by US businesses: $2.8 billion annually
American NGOs: $6.6 billion in grants, goods and volunteers.
Religious overseas ministries: $3.4 billion, including health care, literacy training, relief and development.
US colleges scholarships to foreign students: $1.3 billion
Personal remittances from the US to developing countries: $18 billion in 2000

While Adelman admits that “there are no complete figures for international private giving” she still says that Americans are “clearly the most generous on earth in public — but especially in private — giving”.

And frankly, aid should not be a government thing...  at least not for non socialist/communist countries.

Feel free to read up on the US foreign aid... I don't think handing out $18 Billion is anything to be ashamed of at all:

Completely Off-Topic / BUSH IN BRITAIN
« on: November 23, 2003, 01:41:09 pm »
Woah.. with ALL that is going on in the world.. if you guiys think there need to be talk between the US and Britain to "Improve Things" maybe you should look around for some real enemies.  Umm in case you havent notised there are Muslim Extremists that hate us both and would like to see us all dead...  adn no it's NOT all the US's fault as much as the Brits would like to pass off the blame.  You were doing fine with pissing off the Muslims too long before the whole Iraq situation came up...

Quote from: "rosieposy87"
You place steel tarrifs on our country when we just sent our forces in Iraq, and you want us to talk about it? Oh and, correct me if i'm wrong, but Bush didn't exactly want to 'talk about it' when it came to the war did he? The reason the Second Resolution was pushed was because of Blair. Bush would've gone in a long time before.

I will say Bush's steel tariffs were an insane rediculous idea that I have no idea where he ever got the idea he was doing good there.  I have no idea how his advisors let those get snuck in and I have no idea how they are being allowed to stay.  He will be solely responsible for the destruction of the World economy if someone doesn't take care of them soon.  THIS is an issue where he severly fucked up.

Quote from: "rosieposy87"
Catergorically NOT true. Correct me if i'm wrong again, but Bush is fighting a war on Terrorism. Not protesters.

I could not understand this statement no matter how hard I tried.  I don't know how much clearer it can be.  Extra security was hired because there were going to be 100's of thousands of protesters.  So the people to blame for the extra money being spent are the protesters.  The President of the United States of America has quite Enough Security thank you very much.  They are called the Secret Service and are fully capapble of protecting one man.  If the whiney protesters would have quit their yapping and put down their banners with oh so catchy slogans on them.. you're £5 million could have been saved.  Why is it that Bush had to stay home?  why is it that none of you ask that the whiners stay home?

And the amusing thing is... none of us, would ever insult your Prime Minister by implying he should stay home and not visit the United States.  It's really is laughable that it is the "anti-war" crowd that get hostile, hateful and just plain rude and insulting so quickly...

Polls / school uniforms?
« on: November 22, 2003, 06:40:45 am »
Quote from: "Gina"
basicly what i think is... uniforms shouldn't be manditory... you should be able to wear what you want (within reason) and be able to express yourself.

See, to me, herin lies the problem.  Being able to express yourself has absolutely nothing to do with going to school.  infact, being able to express yourself, in many way is the key distractor for most students.  I mean... take one look at Daniel's argument and you'll see how much thought on a daily basis he goes thorugh about it.

The goal of a school should be to educate, and if a school can attempt to redirect your focus away from the latest fashions and concerns about if Mary looks better than Sue, then just maybe you have a little more focus to put into the actual teaching going on.

And as for uniforms not being able to be implemented into public schools on a grand scale.  It is possible.  It was done her ein my countty just this year.  Kids simply had to start wearing blue oxford shirts and khakis.  And this started MID school year.  There simply just aren't options given sometimes.  A Government school receives the full protection of the government... they pretty much have the ability to do whatever they want.

Polls / If You Could Be One Well Known Musician For a Day...
« on: November 22, 2003, 06:23:14 am »
I would be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart...

I would be 100x more talented than anyone mentioned in this thread...
Get laid about 100x more than anyone in this thread and still have a successful marriage after...
Party like there was no tomorrow with Royalty, and all the top people in the world...
Write some of the most beautiful, intricate, and awe inspiring music ever...
And be remembered and celebrated for 100's of years after I'm dead (unlike the majority of anyone brought up in this thread)

Polls / Nature vs. Nurture
« on: November 22, 2003, 06:08:50 am »
Nurture... I believe anyone can become anything... In the right situation, under the right circumstances... a person can be changed into anything.  I also believe that that person can eventually fight against every natural instict they have.  Face it, there are skinny people in fat families, there are Democrats coming to the bible belt for Thanksgiving dinner, and there are very successful professionals that commit suicide or turn to crime... I think the Nature argument makes everyone feel good, but like most arguments that make people feel good, doesn't hold much water.
