Other Musicians / Dream Theater
« on: February 28, 2004, 04:27:30 pm »
Okay, I don't believe there isn't a topic for these guys yet!  Actually, I don't believe that I had not made one yet.  And I searched but did not find one.  Anyway, Dream Theater is the most incredible Progressive Rock/Metal band ever.  The band is made up of probably the best musicians in the world, in my opinion.  "Awake" is my favorite CD of theirs and I just got the newest CD, "Train of Thought," and it's pretty awesome.    If you like Progressive Metal then Dream Theater is a must.

Completely Off-Topic / R.I.P. Composer/Conductor/Arranger Michael Kamen
« on: November 19, 2003, 11:54:01 am »
Composer Michael Kamen died Tuesday morning at the age of 55 of a heart attack apparently due to complications from multiple sclerosis (Article), (His web site).  He composed and conducted the orchestrations for such artists as Metallica (He did that live S & M CD with them), Queensryche, David Bowie, and also created the scores for films such as Lethal Weapon, X-Men, and Band of Brothers, just to name a few.

Sad day.  I first heard of Michael Kamen many years ago when he worked with Queensryche and since then, for some reason, I could usually tell when something was a Michael Kamen orchestration.  Maybe something in the phrasing, the instrumentation?  I don't know, but I've always enjoyed his work.

Other Musicians / BOA
« on: November 16, 2003, 11:30:40 pm »
This is a strange way to find a band but, I was watching Anime Unleashed on TechTV and heard this great song during the opening credits of a movie called "Serial Experiments Lain."  I Googled some of the lyrics and was able to find the name of the song and the band!  The band is called "Boa" and they are from the UK.  The song I heard is called "Duvet" and you can download it from their website.  It's a VERY cool song and the singer "Jasmine" has a really great voice!  She sounds a little bit "Dido-ish." (Just a little)

Oh, man! She's an incredibly awesome guitarist with a freakishly crazy Stanley Jordon-esque two-tapping style!  I know that sounds odd but I don't know how else to describe it! :D

The Low Men - My old band

Goin' by my middle name for my solo career, 'cause I think it sounds better than "Joe". :)

I split this off from Steph's Music thread in the Creative forum because it was turning into a WonkFest in there and it should be here anyway.  So anyway, thanks for the kind words, everyone! -Joe

Please read Katia's full review of the show in another post below. :D

3/22/2003
US Naval Academy
Annapolis, MD, United States

Katia called and said that the show was only about 30 minutes long and Vanessa played 2 new songs.  One of them called "Birdy (Birdie?)" which Katia says might be "My Pretty" because "My Pretty" was in the chorus, and the other is called After Glow.  Anyway, here is the list.

C'est La Vie
Papa
Ordinary Day
Birdy (Birdie?)
Twilight
Swindler
A Thousand Miles
After Glow

Katia wasn't positive "Birdy (Birdie?)" was where it was, but it was in there. :)

I also posted this on the VCMB here.

I'm going to assume this post was reported accidently.  Especially since the reporter was "anonymous" - Tricia

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / The Official VCMB Errors Thread
« on: March 15, 2003, 02:16:58 am »
This originally started in this thread at the The Official VC Board and here's how it works. Every time you get an error on the Official Vanessa board, copy and paste that error into a post here. Even if you've gotten the error before, or see it in this thread already, just go ahead and paste it in here.  I don't know what good it'll do us here, but it might be fun anyway!  Haha.  :D
