General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Elle.com Interview about IDWBAB

Nothing new, but i think it's good publicity.

Vanessa Carlton’s new album, her fourth, comes out tomorrow.  Rabbits on the Run was produced by Steve Osborne and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s recording studio in Box, England.  Carlton spent years writing the ten tracks, which were finally recorded on tape: “The end goal was how it would sound on vinyl,” she said.

We hopped on the phone with Carlton to talk about “I Don’t Want to be a Bride,” the track we’re exclusively premiering here.  It was the hardest song for her to write, and the most personal.  “It’s really easy to write things that have happened in the past, or what hasn’t happened yet. But when you’re in it…I wrote 13 to 15 pages of single paced teeny font typed pages of lyrics,” she said.  It took her over a year to edit it down to something sort of resembling a song, and even then Osborne had to step in and take the editing reins.

Carlton compares the song to old-school country ballads, but feels most triumphant about the song’s message.  “What about the other side of the argument?” she said, referring to the hundreds of songs women sing about wanting to get married.  “What about if it’s more about what love is?  And what it can be?  And it has nothing to do with the confines or the tradition of any of that?”

If it sounds like Carlton’s grown up, wait until you hear the album. Click through to hear “I Don’t Want to be a Bride.”

We’re delighted to have the wonderfully talented Vanessa Carlton join us this week for our new feature’s inauguration and thrilled she’s invited us over for a rummage through her (and her folks’) LPs.

Vanessa’s brand new release Rabbits on the Run hits store shelves tomorrow (7/26) and later this week we’ll have an opportunity for you to get your hands one. On vinyl of course.

For now, TVD is Vanessa’s:

“My parents had a solid record collection. I’m proud that they kept it intact even though all of my friend’s parents were buying cassette tapes. They taught me the ritual that is placing a needle on the black satin circles. I thought it was magic.

We had a narrow closet off the kitchen that held only records and a record player. I spent a lot of time on the floor in front of that closet picking through and studying the lyrcis and artwork. When I was eight I solely chose records based on what the records looked like. I still do that sometimes.

Crosby Stills & Nash—the one with the three of them sitting on a couch outside a house on the cover. . . self-titled, I think. I love this record. When I was young I think I thought it sounded like the sun. Golden. The harmonies were mesmerizing and I thought the Marakesh song was well, weird.”

"I like the Mumford and Sons song because it's very simple and lovely and almost like a little bit of a nursery rhyme," singer/songwriter/pianist Carlton says of why she chose to cover the UK band's song. "It says a lot about life."

Though she usually works in the a soft poppy vein while Mumford hits the sweet spot of modern rootsy folk/rock, both artists have chart success. Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" scored the No. 1 spot on Pop Songs in 2002, while Mumford's 2010 song "The Cave" earned the No. 2 spot on Rock Songs.

Carlton is busy doing more than mashups these days. The 30-year-old Pennsylvannia native's brand new album, "Rabbits On The Run" is out July 26.

Vanessa Carlton started her career intending to become a professional ballet dancer, but instead, she followed her dreams of becoming a musician. Now, she's a classically trained pianist, a singer and a songwriter. Her 2002 debut album, Be Not Nobody, earned three Grammy nominations. She's followed up that smash debut with three more albums, the latest of which is titled Rabbits on the Run.

Carlton tells Weekend Edition Sunday guest host Linda Wertheimer that her new album was inspired by a diverse host of writers and artists, including Stephen Hawking and his book, A Brief History of Time.

"I love the universal idea of chaos theory — that there are these little blips and these little moments where you can't really make sense of things," Carlton says. "And then, things start to dismantle in a way, and you're like, 'How does that happen?' Then they come together again, and it's beautiful again. ... I find that makes perfect sense to me now."

Carlton says she was also inspired by Watership Down, Richard Adams' fantasy novel about a group of rabbits — hence the album's title. Her biggest influence, however, was her parents' collection of '70s vinyl records, whose warm sound moved her to record the album on analog tape, rather than digitally.

"It might as well have been 1974," Carlton says. "When I put on the test pressing of the record, I was like, 'I can listen to this, and then I can put on a Fleetwood Mac record, and then I can put on my Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young record, and then I can put on my Rickie Lee Jones.' I'm not saying that I'm some master songwriter, as they are. But the sound of it — they belong to the same family."
