General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Re: New update! :D
« on: May 02, 2009, 07:49:53 am »
I'm glad she wants to put out a new album by the end of the year. At least that means she is working on something :)

I hope the next album has more moody songs on it. Maybe she can include All Is Well (at least as a bonus!)

ew.

"Her latest album, "Heroes and Thieves," is a mix between Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne"

Don't worry--they all live by the beach and don't actually do work at UNCW...they don't know any better.

LOL. Her music is nothing like either of those. She is actually pretty hard to compare to anyone else. I think that's a good thing.

Vanessa Songs / Lyrics / Sheet Music / Re: London

I like everything but the 'heavenly creatures' part. Something about it doesn't sound right to me. I think it's the 'creatures' part. You don't normally think of a person as a creature (which I'm thinking she is metaphorically relating them to). To me creature sounds better to describe something odd or mysterious.

I feel like a fangirl just now hearing of them since they've been around for a number of years now (more popular in England), but they are so freaking good. I heard 'Sex On Fire' on the local rock station here in Boston and I had to look them up. One of the best voices I have EVER heard.

And they are soooo good live. The Letterman performance of that song is flawless.

Sounds good but the piano sounds a tad rushed. I'm not sure if in better quality it would sound better to me, but I almost wished it was a little slower. Very pretty though.

Aww, I like it. I especially like the catchy part that is turned into a musical riff toward the end. It's high but not too high, she doesn't sound like she's pushing herself, it sounds more natural and pretty.

I am getting a little tired of her staccato breaks (the pointed, dun dun dun dun dun parts)though. Well, in this song it sounds a little unprofessional compared to the rest of the song and I think it'd sound smoother with a touch of sustain.

Completely Off-Topic / Recommendations for movies?

Oh yeah, I've seen Perfume. Really strange film. I'd watch it just because it's interesting, but it's pretty disturbing and I'm not sure I loved the end.

Memento was the first one I thought of, too. If you haven't seen it you will love it. It is such a great movie.

Umm...

Hard Candy (psychological thriller / sort of horror / REALLY well acted -- the girl from Juno when she was a few years younger, awesome performances)

Once (Really good, moving and not at all cliche love/friendship story set to some also really good irish folk/indie music)

In the Valley of Elah (Just saw this come on HBO. Slow at first but really good acting from Tommy Lee Jones & Charlize Theron. Addicting, definitely worth watching... sort of a mystery / suspense / drama with a military backdrop)

Hansel & Gretel (Can be found under foreign *korean* films on watch-movies.net. A really neat, surreal horror/suspense type movie. Not gorey or dumb. Wacky at times, the end is really worth watching. Some VERY good child actors and a really inventive story. Subtitled but very good quality)

El Crimen Del Padre Amaro (A drama about a spanish priest who commits some... er, hefty sins. The young priest is Gael Garcia Bernal. I first saw this in my college spanish class. WOW what a good movie. Def recommended. Also subtitles)

El Orfanato / The Orphanage (A really cool little ghost story sort of reminiscent of The Others. It is also a Guillermo del Toro film (aka Pan's Labrynth). Very fun to watch)

The Devil's Backbone (Another really good Guillermo del Toro film. One of his earlier movies. Both of these are subtitled. Both ghost stories. Fun stuff.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / NEW NOTE FROM VANESSA 1/26/09

This is kind of off topic but might be kind of interesting to you guys. My cousin works for an audio/visual company so they setup the audio at a lot of different events. Well a few years back they were setting up for an event McCain was speaking at and apparently halfway through his speech his mic went out so my cousin, who is in his 20s, discreetly walked across the stage to give him a mic that worked properly and he said that McCain stared at him like 'How dare you step onto this stage while I'm speaking' so he hates McCain and voted for Obama lol

I'm more moderate but super left (usually celebrities) and super right wings (usually bible crazies) equally annoy me.

I think it's funny you think I'm conservative just by what I said though. That's part of what needs to change in this country. That is ONE good thing Obama at least pretends he's for (bi-partisanship)

Not a huge fan, but she's alright. I saw her MTV Cribs and her parents house seems so cheerful and comfortable, it's no wonder she writes lots of breezy beachy feeling songs.

Hi Brian, I mean Stranger ;)

Glad to hear you're doing well. Relatively, anyway. I would think that TX is cheaper than NJ, but maybe not so much. But it must be nice to be closer to family.

I personally didn't particularly care for either candidate, but it annoys me when people say stuff like "there is a god" in regard to Obama and act like he's our savior and "Wow, look how much America cares and wants to make a change" or some BS. Obama is a liberal with pretty much cookie cutter left wing ideals. He is a regular politican and I hope he does a good job for the country's sake, but people need to stop deluding themselves. . . not saying she is deluding herself, it just gets old.

Also isn't it funny that liberals are usually the ones wanting to keep god out of the government and then they are saying stuff like this ;) ;)
