Other Musicians / Ben Folds
« on: June 28, 2005, 11:33:25 am »
I've transposed the opening to The Ascent of Stan, but when I tried playing it on the piano, I found it virtually impossible. :(  I have no piano training, so I find it hard to play new songs, but I can usually get it with time. That song is so freakin hard though.

I like Dido. These are the only songs I've heard from her, though:

Don't Leave Home
Thank You
White Flag
Here with Me

And that's the order of my favorites too, most to least.
Should I get a CD or DVD of hers?

Wow, 2 years and no one else has posted!

... Well, I just wanted to say, I discovered Ben Folds' music recently and I really like it. He's a really good piano player, but in a different way than Vanessa. His style is more pop/jazz sort of. He pretty much plays all the instruments by himself. Hm. I suppose he's a good drummer too, I'm just more interested in piano.

I don't really like the lyrics/themes/subject matter/whatever of his songs though. They're not bad, they're just eccentric. Why do I want to hear a song about an old guy losing his job? (That song is beautiful though, and sad) One of my favorite songs is The Ascent of Stan, but it's about a hippie who's become THE MAN. I give him credit for being different, but I might like it even better if the song was about something else. So basically, I like his music better than his words.

Surprisingly, I hate the title song, "Rockin' the Suburbs". I wish it weren't even on the CD. I don't really like cursing in songs. It's not excessive in his CD though, there are some points where I don't think it was necessary.

Well, since it has been 2 years since you posted this, does anyone know if he has any more cd's out? or what he's been doing lately?

I was just in the store and I saw his CD. I hadn't heard of him before, but I randomly decided to check him out. So I heard some of his music and I like it. I can't wait to get the CD, but I have no money. :(

Wow, thanks so much for putting so much work to get it up for us! I was just hoping to catch a repeat, but what you're doing is much better. I really appreciate it. :)

Live Shows / Vanessa opening for Stevie Nicks
« on: June 23, 2005, 11:27:37 am »
OMG I'm soooo excited! She's gonna perform where I live! I might get to go to my first Vanessa concert! I'm really gonna make an effort to. :D  :D  :D  :!:  :!:  :!: I'd love to see her in person. If I was extremely lucky maybe I could meet her... Meh, I'm probably dreaming. I've only been to one concert before, so how common is it to get to meet the musicians?

I'm listening to her version of Wishin' and Hopin' right now, and I like her vocals on that a lot too.

Lol, it seems this thread has gotten really off course.

I think one song that she has the best vocals in is probably Ordinary Day from Be not Nobody, and Where the Streets have No Name, she has great range in that song.... :) Not that this has anything to do with All I Ask.

lol. Yeah, she's really good in Ordinary Day. I really like her singing on "As I wake in bed". That part doesn't even sound like it's her singing, it sounds better. But I like her regular singing anyway.

I think the vocals on the Rinse version are better though, and I like depressing songs! :D

LOL, The gangsta one was hilarious. And White Houses would have been so much better if Vanessa had put "Ya know? Eh?" at the end.

I love All I Ask. It's one of my favorite songs of hers. I think the Rinse version is ten times better than the demo one. I don't think she'll ever release it officially though. What do you guys think?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've just noticed that Dora's Genuine photo site is down, and so is Black Vulture's. Can anyone tell me what happened?

Baronessa, is the clip for Papa still up? I couldn't download it and I'd like to see you play it. EDIT: Nevermind it works now.

I enjoyed watching you play HAWBTW and I must say you are much better than I am. Dare I say better than Vanessa's? Because yours was much faster.

I couldn't exactly see your fingering, but it was amazing. On the middle solo, are you playing it the same way as I have it in the sheet music I wrote? I can't really tell, and if it's different I'd love to see what you have since it sounds much better.

I wish I had a real piano. When I play my crappy keyboard it doesn't sound half as good as that!

Again, catchy does not equal good. The plague was catchy.

lol! That has to be the most hilarious thing I've heard all day! Thanks for that.
