General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Billboard Review of White Houses
« on: August 13, 2004, 01:49:09 pm »
It has been nearly 2-1/2 years since Vanessa Carlton launched one of the most enduring songs of the millennium with the enchanting "A Thousand Miles." A lot has changed since then, with the proliferation of today's ubiquitous girl grunge, a la Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson and even Hilary Duff. So "White Houses" is all the more welcome of a return because, thankfully, it bears the do-it-my-way signature of a singer/ songwriter who relies on piano; a meandering, storytelling lyrical style; and deceptively sweet vocals that underlie an intellectual bent. Carlton wrote the song with her main squeeze, Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins, who also handled production duties. The result is a highly original composition that makes you really want to listen and understand -- and then sing along. From the upcoming "Harmonium," due Oct. 19.

Part about Vanessa:

Bribing the vote

Vanessa Carlton apparently wants George W. Bush out of the White House. The singer posted a message on her official Web site urging her young fans to register to vote and to support John Kerry in his bid for the presidency. She wrote: "If you all vote Kerry, I'll give you invisible cheek kisses."

According to v-c.net:

"On Wednesday , August 11, Vanessa will stop by TRL to premiere her new video for "White Houses"! Check out the show description from the TRL site:

"Vanessa Carlton swings by the studio with a long overdue visit and a premiere."

Hopefully, some Nessaholics will be in full force once more to support our girl inside and outside the MTV studios!"

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Vanessa's album should be wrapped
« on: April 25, 2004, 06:55:08 pm »
In a couple of weeks according to SJ.

Stephan Jenkins: Well, we’re going to start a fourth album. The other guys in the band have written 20 songs; none of them have lyrics yet. I’ve been producing another album for Vanessa Carlton.

But they played me the stuff that they did, which completely rocked my doors off. And I got so excited to play with them, and I’m just really juiced about it. So as soon as I’m done with this, which should be a week or two, I’ll go back in and record with Third Eye Blind and record the fourth album.

Mobile I/O No Brainer for Brain 17-04-2004
Drummer Brain has been pursuing a parallel career in computer music and beat programming for the past few years

Well-known for his past work with Primus, as well as the current line-up of Guns n' Roses, drummer Brain (Bryan Mantia) has been pursuing a parallel career in computer music and beat programming for the past few years. Using two portable Metric Halo setups, Brain is able to bring his programming talents to bear on multiple projects simultaneously.
"I do a lot of programming for albums," Brain acknowledges. "I just did a load of stuff for the new Vanessa Carlton album. I also just did an album with Buckethead, the guitarist from Guns n' Roses. His new album has a lot of programming."

A Bay Area resident, Brain was introduced to Apple computers by several relatives, and now uses a pair of G4 Titanium laptops. Looking for a high quality digital audio interface, he reports that friends in the industry, such as producers Michael Beinhorn and Roy Thomas Baker, recommended that he check out Metric Halo. "Everybody told me about the Metric Halo MIO, that it's a great, portable eight-in, eight-out mixer with DSP."

Brain tried the Metric Halo Mobile I/O against his then current interface and was blown away. "The Metric Halo destroyed it," he reports, "as far as the low end, the high end, and the quality of sound. Right away, it was like someone had taken a blanket off the speakers. It's not like you have to be an audiophile - it's something where even my mom could tell the difference!"

"I ended up buying that," he continues, "then I purchased the ULN-2, so I have two portable units and two separate systems. So if I'm working in two separate studios, I can have one at one and one at the other."

As Brain observes, the system not only sounds much better but also is far more portable than other systems, which can involve carting racks of gear around. "The system is basically in a backpack, so I'm totally portable. I show up with my backpack with a MIDI interface, a little keyboard, and the MIO. My FireWire cable is four inches long. I put my laptop on top of the MIO - it fits perfectly. The sound quality is as good as it gets - especially from a unit that is so portable.

As he recounts, the system can easily handle multi-track sessions. "Vanessa Carlton wrote the theme song to the Spyhunter 2 video game and I programmed that beat and the music. We were bouncing tracks off my laptop and I was running 24 tracks with Logic plug-ins and multiple Waves plug-ins, from a little 5200 rpm Firelight drive."

Even though he does not have problems with his MIOs, Brian reports that, unlike other manufacturers, whenever he needs to reach the tech support department at Metric Halo he is able to. "Every time I call either someone answers the phone or someone calls me back within half an hour - which is unheard of. Their tech support is super supportive. That's what I dig about them."

Brain, who has incorporated hand percussion and even turntables into his stage equipment over the years, has recently been using the two-channel ULN-2 in his live set-up. "I've been using it as the I/O for my sampler. We just did some shows with me and Buckethead and [System of a Down vocalist] Serj - we have this little avant-garde band, Giant Robot. I run [Native Instruments] Battery in my laptop, and I've been using the ULN-2 live with that. I sound-designed my own samples. I plop them into Battery and play them from there."

Completely Off-Topic / California to let 14-year-olds vote?
« on: March 09, 2004, 03:09:57 pm »
SACRAMENTO -- Millions of California's teenagers would become the nation's first to vote under a proposed constitutional amendment introduced Monday by a 71-year-old state senator.
Sen. John Vasconcellos, D-Santa Clara, proposed the idea alongside three other lawmakers, saying the Internet, cellular phones, multichannel television and a diverse society make today's teens better informed than generations of their predecessors.

Coming on the heels of an expected record low turnout among adults in the March 2 election, Vasconcellos would give 16-year-olds a half-vote and 14-year-olds a quarter-vote in state elections beginning in 2006.

The idea, formally called "Training Wheels for Citizenship," first requires two-thirds approval by the Legislature to appear on this November's ballot.

The California suggestion comes 33 years after the United States lowered its voting age from 21 to 18, and amid a fledgling youth movement in the United States and other nations to lower the voting age.

Supporters say Israel allows 17-year-olds to vote in local elections, while Austria and Germany allow 16-year-olds to vote in some local elections. A bill in California letting 17-year-olds vote in primary elections when they will be 18 years old for the general election has languished.

"People who are given opportunity when it counts often live up to it," said Vasconcellos, flanked by nearly 40 teenagers from across the state.

"When we gave the vote to those who didn't own property, then to women, then to persons of all colors, we added to the richness of our demo- cratic dialogue and our own nation's integrity and its model for the world," he said, calling it time to further extend the vote.

A Republican colleague called it "the nuttiest idea I've ever heard."

Said Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, "There's a reason why 14-year-olds and 16-year-olds don't vote. They are not adults. They are not mature enough. They are easily deceived by political charlatans."

Student supporters said the idea could give them a say in issues such as education funding and bring new voices to a California electorate largely dominated by older Caucasians.

"If we could vote, politicians would see us as votes, not just kids, and they would take our issues seriously," said Robert Reynolds, a student at Berkeley High School.

"We feel that many problems that are created in our commu-nity by the youth, such as vandalism, violence, gangs, to name a few, are direct results of the youth striving to be heard and striving to have a voice, but being unable to share that in a positive way," added Mark Murphy of Santa Rosa, a Montgomery High School student.

Vasconcellos said the reason for not giving teenagers a full vote was strategic.

"If I said 16 full and 14 full, I think it wouldn't have much legs." But he added, "In my heart I think 16-year-olds should be given a full vote."

Co-sponsors of the proposal include Sen. Edward Vincent, D-Inglewood, and Assembly-women Carol Liu, D-South Pasadena, and Sarah Reyes, D-Fresno.
