Saving a streaming-only video?
« on: February 22, 2004, 01:24:09 pm »
You guys, I have a problem: a singer I really really love is streaming a live show tonight online.
The thing is I'd like to save it (it's a live video webcast), the streaming format is .asx (Windows Media player).
Is there any way I could save it on my comp (using a software or whatever)??
Thanks, any help is appreciated!!

There is software out there that will do it. I use Linux mplayer. For windows I once used a program called stream-down. It costs money, but the free trial version works fully (just a 30 day limit or something).

http://stream-down.cocsoft.com/

I've never used it on actual live streams, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Thanks Kev.
It seems to have worked but the thing is I can't open the .asf file it created  :?
Do you know how I could encode it in mpg or avi??
And Laura, the singer is Elly K, she's an awesome piano player who lives in the LA area.

VirtualDub will convert it to divx.

Download: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tools?tool=399#comments
Guide: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/avi2divx.htm

Although the asf should play in Windows Media Player as it is.

I've tried that. It says something like asf is a Microsoft format and doesn't wanna convert it.
And the vid is 170 mb but when I launch it with WMP, it just doesn't play. I guess the dl didn't work.

Are you using one of the following versions of media player?

Windows Media Player 7
Windows Media Player for Windows XP
Windows Media Player 9 Series

Try and play this sample asf file. If it works then yeah, the download might have messed up. If it doesn't play you'll need to grab a later version of WMPlayer or maybe just download an ASF codec like this one.

But even if the download failed, 170 Megs is a lot of data, you must have something salvagable in there. If you can upload it anywhere then I can take a look at it, if you want.

I'm using WMP 9 Series, I downloaded that sample file and it works (well I only have the sound, no video).
I don't think I can upload such a large file on my webspace  :(
Oh dude, it sucks, she even said hi to me in that vid.

Can anyone help?  I'm trying to save a highlight video from dodgers.com.  It opens a Windows Media player embedded  in the window.

This is what I'm looking at right now.

You can see the window it opens in by going to http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp and page through the headline window up top and see
and clicking "Plays of the Game"

Or here: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/video/daily.jsp
and click on "Plays of the Game: for LA@NYM 08/29/04

I know you guys can figure this out :D

(17 Grand Slams!  Amazing!  Everyone should watch.  )

Close C :) But that movie location is URL encoded because it has to be passed into an IFRAME on the URL. Which is why media player failed to find it. If you decode it (below), then it will work.

mms://a1503.v108692.c10869.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1503/10869/v0001/mlb.download.akamai.com/10869/2004/open/pog/archive08/082904_lannyn_pog_350.wmv?ct1=mlb

However, it's mms:// which is a streaming protocol, so you'll still only be able to watch it, not save it. If you need to save it, then you need some special software. The "Stream Down" program that I mentioned to Ghis above will do the job :)

Let me know if you get any trouble.

VirtualDub sucks, it always crashes when I try to use .avi files because they're all DiVx encoded.

Hehe, I've found better than Stream Down, it's called "WM Recorder".
Beats everything, it downloads any streaming WMP-based media, woot!  :D

Not quite. There are other symbols too. %3D is '=', %3A is ':', etc.
