Vanessa Carlton kicks off Springfest

04/26/05 - Musical talents, Vanessa Carlton and Blue, launched the Student Entertainment Committee's Springfest 2005 last night in Edwards Auditorium.

"I'm so happy you all came out tonight," Carlton said. "We'll all just have fun."

SEC's Tina Louth said a few members of the committee went to a convention, where they showcased possible performances, and came up with the idea.

"She [Carlton] wanted to do colleges, so she was a good choice," Louth said.

Blue opened for Carlton with a showcase of songs off of his new album, and played some older songs as well.

"It's my kind of music, it's mellow. I'm a real big guitar fan," Freshman Casey Wilbur said.

"Seriously, everyone here has been so nice, so thank you," Blue said to the crowd, and welcomed anyone who was 21 or older to come out for a beer after the show.

Vanessa Carlton started her performance after a brief intermission, and opened with, "Look Out."

Before each song, Carlton explained what her inspirations were for writing them. She said "Ordinary Day," was not only the first song she wrote, but also the only one she had finished at once.

"It was difficult to concentrate on writing a song, never mind in just one sitting," she said.

The song "White Houses" was another popular song she performed. Carlton said MTV censored the song because "it was too explicit for them, which is hilarious because all MTV shows is ass."

Carlton explained that there was a recorded portion to the song before she sang "Private Radio."

"After the whole lip-syncing debouche I didn't want people to think I wasn't singing live," Carlton said.

She joked about unexpected cracks in her voice during her performance, blaming it on her past behavior.

"I've flown on too many planes," she said. "And smoked too much pot, and that's what happened to my voice."

Other songs Carlton performed had themes that ranged from vampires, unicorns and ghosts to girls who stalk boys and a neighbor who reminded her of a Ken doll.

Carlton closed her performance with her most popular song, "A Thousand Miles."

"I respect her because she plays the piano," Freshman Alex Bluedorn said.

Freshman Katie Marciano said, "We like her; it was a birthday present from my sister."
