ahh yes, but:

1) he wasn't running a "race" for sport/leisure
b) The terrain was rocky hills and shit...that dude didn't stand a chance.

Phidippides did.

Glad someone here knows some history.  ;)

Yes, thats the guy I was refering to.

And BTW, they still run the original marathon route today, although on better roads.  ;)

And do a google search on "marathon deaths" and you can see that its still not the safest sport out there.  If you go in untrained (as most of us are), you can severely hurt or kill yourself.  My point stands, simply finishing a marathon is a huge milestone in and of itself.  And V finished closer to the front of the pack than the back, which says something too.

FYI, there were 2733 women age 20-29 in the marathon, and she placed 360 in that field.  She kicked some ass.

^ there's no argument there.  something like this requires training.

V had an olympic trainer for it

That's pretty good.

I almost forgot about this until I saw a blurb in SI about the guy who won and instantly thought, "I wonder how Vanessa did."

I may not be around all that much anymore, but I'm still a NESSAholic at heart  .
