Good thesis statement?
« on: December 11, 2007, 06:20:07 pm »
In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen takes on the literary element of irony to demonstrate the consequences of pride.

^ Is that a good thesis statement? I hate making those! I think this one is good compared to others I have written.

CONSTRUCTIVE critisism is welcome.

How about:

Although Jane Austen is a well known writer, her novel Pride and Prejudice could be used as a sleep aid.

The thing I hated about writing papers in high school, especially 9th, 10th grade, is it all became formulaic.  It sounds like you have your start, but it could probably use some work.  Try to focus your argument and build your thesis on that.  When in doubt, ask the teacher for help...they're getting paid to help you.

This may help: http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/thesis.html

I totally FULLY agree that the novel can be used as a sleep aid!!! I read it and really knock out. One moment people are dancing the next people are getting married???? its crazy!

I am in 10th grade. I know what you mean about writing the papers. I'm sick of them!

I like that website thanks for the link!

It's a fine thesis statement for a 10th grade lit paper.

Also, Jane Austen sucks.

I think it needs to be a little longer, sounded too short but other than that it sounded good.

EDIT:

my teacher advised me to be more specific with the thesis statement.

OLD

In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen deomstrates the consequences of pride by taking on the literary element of irony.

NEW

In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen demonstrates how pride leads to faulty judgment by utilizing the literary element of irony.

^ is that any better? or more specific? Thanks! 8-)

I was taught to basically preview your arguments in the thesis statement so I would add examples of the uses of irony

well thats what the paper is about. I did not do an essay map sentance yet, were you would add the examples which each example would be a  paragraph. But I do know what you mean. =]

Sure.  By the time you're in 12th grade and college a thesis statement gets longer and more complicated.  But we're talking about a sophmore in HS here.

First of all, what is your essay question? i thesis should be general and not too specific. don't include examples in your thesis, that should come in the body of your essay.

I learned it in the 10th grade so I guess I was lucky to get a teacher that prepared me early. That's what's wrong with education in America, you can be expected to not learn certain things and it's okay.
