A Walk to Remember Transcript -- Part One
A train or something is heard as the Pandora logo comes up.

RANDOM BOY
Yeah!

RANDOM BOY #2
Come on!

RANDOM BOY #3
Whooo!

CUT TO:

The credits. The Breeders' "Cannonball" kicks up on the soundtrack. A car is heard approaching, tires screeching.

CUT TO:

EXT. CEMENT FACTORY. NIGHT.

A car headlight flashes and goes out. BELINDA exits her car and shuts the door. She's parked beside DEAN's truck. ERIC's jeep pulls up on the other side of her car.

BELINDA
(to someone off-screen)
Hey. Is he here?

Okay, ERIC just got there and WALKER rode with her, so who is she asking? ::shrug:: The camera is panning away from her. TRACIE exits the passenger side of DEAN's truck. DEAN gets out of the driver's side.

DEAN
Is he here yet?

WALKER
Nope.

TRACIE
(to Dean)
Maybe you scared him.

ERIC
Hey, I gotta take a massive piss.

WALKER goes to tie his shoe on BELINDA's bumper so his back is facing ERIC who's walking ahead.

WALKER
Dude, any excuse for you to pull that thing out.

LANDON is just arriving at that moment in his badass Camaro. ERIC waves his hand like 'Don't you dare be lookin'" and turns away from LANDON's car. Jonny Was (or West, Gould, & Fitzgerald as they're known on the soundtrack) is blaring "So What Does It All Mean?" from LANDON's radio. Haha. Clever writers. LANDON's listening to himself singing.

Your smile was a drug
Your style was money
So what does it all mean?

The camera pans back to TRACIE and DEAN, who are currently macking, TRACIE's back pressed against the side of DEAN's truck. LANDON exits his car and slams the door.

LANDON
Okay. Anyone got any beer?

TRACIE
We finished 'em all back at school. Besides, you've had enough.

LANDON smiles as he passes by the two lovebirds. He greets DEAN with a handshake. TRACIE and DEAN get back to kissing as soon as LANDON goes.

BELINDA
I've got one.

LANDON's smile fades.

BELINDA
It's not cold, but it's yours if you want it.

ERIC goes to sit on the hood of DEAN's truck.

ERIC
Yeah, all you gotta do is sit up, beg, roll over, and shake that booty.

He laughs and punches LANDON playfully.

BELINDA
Thanks a lot, Eric.

ERIC
Anytime, anywhere.

He chomps the air.

WALKER
This is gonna be sweet, man.

DEAN
(smiling)
I'm glad I thought of it.

TRACIE pushes DEAN away from her.

TRACIE
You guys are animals just 'cause he's new.

DEAN
Hey! Shh! You've been talkin' shit the whole time here. Why don't you be quiet?

He shoves her against the truck roughly and walks away.

LANDON
(to Dean)
Hey, hey, hey, hey.

TRACIE
(to Dean)
What is the matter with you?

LANDON
You know how it is. Nobody's forcin' him to show up.

TRACIE
Dean.

BELINDA
(agreeing with Landon)
Yeah. But if he doesn't, I wanna go back to the dance.

DEAN
Hey. Hey Belinda, I've got an idea. Why don't you go back to the dance by yourself?

ERIC laughs.

BELINDA
I wasn't talking to you, Dean.

DEAN grabs his balls and looks at her smugly.

LANDON
(to Belinda)
Hey, you know I don't dance.

He goes to join DEAN by his Camaro.

ERIC
It's true. I've seen the man bust a move and it just ain't pretty. But a brother like myself is ready to get his freak on, so what you say, baby?

He goes to 'get his freak on' with BELINDA. She pushes him off her.

BELINDA
Oh. Why don't you put your freak away before you hurt somebody?

TRACIE
Like yourself.

WALKER
Oh, that sucks.

CLAY's jeep pulls up.

DEAN
Hey.

He starts clapping. He's like a giddy little schoolgirl.

ERIC
Aw yeah.

DEAN
He's here!

ERIC
Oh, here he comes. Here he comes.

DEAN
He's here.

DEAN laughs.

WALKER
All right. Here he comes. Here he -- oh oh. Yeah.

LANDON looks up at DEAN and smiles. Grinning, DEAN rolls his forehead against LANDON's. It's kinda cute. (Even though I still think DEAN is an asshole and shouldn't get any love. ;))

WALKER
Hey, check out the Safari Joe truck.

CLAY parks the jeep.

ERIC
Oh, I can't wait to see you fly.

CLAY exits his jeep and waves at everyone.

CLAY
Hi.

BELINDA
Hey.

ERIC
Hey, nice shirt, Opie.

DEAN and LANDON laugh. CLAY's face falls and he shakes his head.

DEAN
You're late. I -- I thought I said be here at 10.

He checks his watch.

DEAN
But you know, when I say 'Be here at 10', be here, okay? You think you can remember that next time?

CLAY gives him a look like, "Psh. Whatever. You're not intimidating." DEAN leaves him to walk ahead. He laughs.

DEAN
If there is a next time.

He shoves LANDON playfully.

DEAN
Come on.

WALKER approaches him. They do their little macho man handshake and skip on ahead. WALKER and ERIC laugh. TRACIE and BELINDA trail behind holding hands.

CLAY
(to Landon)
Is he always like that?

LANDON throws an arm around CLAY.

LANDON
Always, man. So how 'bout it?

He spreads his arms like they're wings.

LANDON
You ready to fly?

TRACIE breaks away from BELINDA to catch up to DEAN.

TRACIE
Wait up, baby.

DEAN
Whooo!

LANDON hops away from CLAY to join his buddies.

TRACIE
(to Dean)
Let me get on your back. Giddy up, giddy up.

CLAY is checking out the water as everyone makes their way to the platform. LANDON catches up to ERIC. TRACIE's getting a piggyback ride from DEAN.

DEAN
Whooo!

Everyone reaches the platform. DEAN sits down and TRACIE gets off him. The others crowd around. DEAN explains the task to CLAY.

DEAN
Okay. Here's the deal: You're gonna jump from up there into here.

LANDON takes off his coat and shoots CLAY a devilish look.

DEAN
That's it. Then you're one of us. Okay?

CLAY nods.

DEAN
You ready?

CLAY
Yeah.

DEAN
Yeah?

CLAY smiles.

CLAY
Yeah.

DEAN
All right.

DEAN stands up.

DEAN
All right.

He puts his hands around CLAY's neck.

DEAN
Let's do this, okay?

CLAY nods, looking uneasy. DEAN walks away from him. TRACIE is right behind him holding his hand.

DEAN
Whooo!

LANDON looks up at CLAY who's now looking worried.

LANDON
Hey, it's cake, man. Hell, I'm jumpin' with ya.

CLAY's eyes go to the platform. It's quite a jump.

CLAY
Now, how -- how deep is this?

LANDON
I don't really know. Let's go find out, huh?

He grins. DEAN laughs. LANDON walks ahead.

ERIC
Let's do it.

CLAY takes off his jacket and shirt. (There's another shirt under it.) He once again eyes the platform. LANDON leads the way. Up the platform ladder they go. Everyone's watching. ERIC does the handshake thing with DEAN.

ERIC
(laughing)
Yeah! Shit, yeah!

DEAN
Whoo!

WALKER
Come on, let's go!

DEAN laughs again.

DEAN
Jump.

CLAY and LANDON are now at the top of the platform several feet above the water.

CLAY
Uh, have you done this?

LANDON
Yeah, man. We've all done this.

ERIC
I hope you had your Wheaties this morning.

DEAN
Hey, you guys gonna do this sometime tonight or...

LANDON
On three. One.

DEAN and TRACIE kiss. ERIC looks up at LANDON and CLAY with a smile on his face.

LANDON
Two. Three!

On three, CLAY goes falling forward. LANDON smiles. He stays put on the platform.

DEAN
Whoo! Yeah.

TRACIE
Whoo! Oh my God.

Everyone's talking at once, cheering and laughing. CLAY lands in the water with a thud and a big splash.

ERIC
Ohhh. Yeah.

He claps madly. Everyone is still laughing and cheering. A moment passes then CLAY's body floats to the surface facedown. The cheering stops.

TRACIE
(alarmed)
Oh my God.

WALKER
Oh, shit.

BELINDA
(worried)
He's hurt. Landon! He's hurt!

TRACIE
What happened? Is he okay?

BELINDA
Landon, get down here.

LANDON
(quietly, troubled)
What the hell?

He races down the platform and to the water as TRACIE begins yelling at DEAN.

TRACIE
Dean! Dean, what the heck?!

BELINDA
You guys, he's hurt.

ERIC
(to Landon)
Come on, man!

TRACIE
Dean, is he okay? Dean, you idiot, I told you!

ERIC
In the water, come on.

WALKER
Landon, get him outta the water.

ERIC
Hurry up!

LANDON splashes into the water.

TRACIE
(panicking)
Is he dead? Is he dead? What are we gonna do?

DEAN
(to Landon)
Come here, come here.

LANDON has reached CLAY and is struggling to swim them both to shore.

LANDON
Help me!

Everyone's yelling at once.

BELINDA
Hurry, get him over here.

LANDON
There's a lead pipe in here. He must've hit it.

ERIC
Come on, get him out of the water!
(his voice cracks)
Hurry up!

LANDON reaches shore.

DEAN
Get over here. Watch his head! Watch his head.

ERIC
Come on, get him out.

A SECURITY GUARD shines a flashlight their way. He's several feet away from them.

SECURITY GUARD
Hey, who's down there?

Hearing that, DEAN's pretty much, 'Screw LANDON' and begins shouting at TRACIE:

DEAN
Come on! Tracie, come on!

WALKER pulls BELINDA up to drag her away.

LANDON
Eric!

DEAN
(to Tracie)
Go!

The SECURITY GUARD speaks into a walkie talkie as he races towards them:

SECURITY GUARD
Hey, we got some trespassers. You better get a squad car out here.

WALKER
Come on, Landon.

DEAN
Come on!

WALKER
Eric!

DEAN, BELINDA, and WALKER are all running back to the cars.

DEAN
You guys, just leave him!

WALKER
Come on, forget about him!

ERIC is the only one helping LANDON, who still hasn't gotten CLAY out of the water.

ERIC
Give me his arms. Give me his arms.

LANDON hands CLAY over to ERIC. ERIC pulls CLAY ashore.

LANDON
Watch his head.

ERIC
It's all right. I got him. All right, come on. We gotta get outta here.

LANDON hops ashore. ERIC helps him up.

LANDON
Go!

ERIC
Landon, come on!

LANDON
Get outta here!

LANDON kneels beside CLAY. ERIC runs to join the others.

TRACIE
(to Dean)
I told you not to do this!

They reach DEAN's truck and clambor inside. CLAY is coughing and moving his head from side to side. LANDON grabs him to make him stop moving.

LANDON
(urgently)
Calm down. Shhh!

DEAN revs up his truck. BELINDA is panting, trailing behind WALKER. She looks back at LANDON and CLAY.

WALKER
Belinda, come on! Let's go!

DEAN drives off.

WALKER
Come on! Get in! I'm drivin'!

He hops into the driver's side of BELINDA's car and shuts the door. LANDON is holding CLAY down. CLAY has stopped coughing.

LANDON
(horrified)
Oh, shit.

BELINDA gets into her car sadly. WALKER floors it. They're outta there. A siren wails as ERIC, panting, reaches his jeep. He throws open the door and gets in, revving the engine. LANDON looks down at CLAY, holding his head in his hands. CLAY has a nasty gash on his forehead and his nose is bleeding. LANDON stares down at him anxiously. Still, he bolts. CLAY moves slightly. LANDON grabs his shoes and jacket and hops off the dock. He races to his Camaro, tosses his stuff inside and hurriedly gets in himself, slamming the door.

LANDON
Dammit.

The car screeches off. Fuel's "Empty Spaces" blares on his stereo. He circles the Camaro around, nearly colliding with the cop car. The cop car screeches and turns to follow. The chase is on.

This is the way
Is the way
I fill your spaces now
It's the way
'Cause all that's been left for me is to fight to fill your empty spaces now
Now!

LANDON
Shit.

LANDON has nowhere to turn. He drives wildly trying not to crash into anything. He glances behind him. The cop is right on his tail. Soon the cop is right alongside him. They exchange another look. The cop pulls up ahead of LANDON to cut him off. LANDON turns and smashes into a water barrel. Waters splashes up and over the now damaged Camaro. LANDON coughs and moves painfully. The cop approaches him and shines a flashlight on LANDON's face. LANDON's forehead is bleeding. He turns to look at the cop wearily.

COP
Keep your hands on the wheel.

LANDON turns away, shuts his eyes, and places his hands on the steering wheel.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE TO:

EXT. BAY. MINUTES BEFORE SUNRISE.

A boat travels to shore. Birds caw.

FADE TO:

EXT. LANDON'S HOUSE. MORNING.

MRS. CARTER's station wagon is parked out front of their one story home.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S KITCHEN. MORNING. CONTINUOUS.

MRS. CARTER rises from the table, an empty plate in her hand. She sighs as she makes her way to the sink. She turns to see LANDON limping around the corner. A bandage covers his forehead. He sighs. MRS. CARTER turns her back to him again. LANDON slowly eases himself into a chair at the table and picks up a fork. However, if you'll notice in the movie, there is nothing there for him to eat.

LANDON
You know, momma, my leg really hurts today. I don't think I can go anyplace.

MRS. CARTER spins around.

MRS. CARTER
Maybe I should call your father.

LANDON looks at her, sulking.

LANDON
No.

She gives him a disapproving look.

LANDON
Okay, I'm not talking to him. There's no way.

MRS. CARTER
This has gotta stop between you and him. You can't do that. You need a father.

LANDON ignores her and turns to his fork. Oh yes, looking at your eating utensil will surely solve all your problems. Hahah.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(off screen)
Let us be thankful today...

CUT TO:

INT. CHURCH. MORNING.

REVEREND SULLIVAN is at the podium. He continues his speech:

REVEREND SULLIVAN
That a young life was saved by our Lord. And let us pray for the lives of the others involved who are clearly not on the path of righteousness.

BELINDA shifts uncomfortably in her seat and looks over at LANDON who clearly doesn't want to be there either. REVEREND SULLIVAN nods. LANDON scratches his forehead. The choir rises and begins to sing from their booklets.

CHOIR
(singing)
Let the light
From the lighthouse

BELINDA observes the choir thoughtfully.

CHOIR
(singing)
Let it shine on me
I wonder

LANDON shifts in his seat wanting so badly to leave. His eyes finally land on the choir.

CHOIR
(singing)
I wonder
If the light

JAMIE's eyes meet LANDON's. He's instantly both surprised and curious.

CHOIR
(singing)
From the lighthouse
Would shine
Would shine
Would shine on me

JAMIE
(singing)
Here is my thought
This is my plea
Lord let your holy light shine on me
I wonder will you

LANDON looks up at JAMIE again, now upset.

JAMIE
(singing)
Hear my prayer
I know I'm not worthy, but I need your help
Lord shine your light
Shine it this way

LANDON moves uncomfortably again, but his eyes stay fixated on JAMIE. BELINDA turns her attention to LANDON again, now bitter. JAMIE is looking at LANDON again.

JAMIE
(singing)
Shine it so I can see which way to take
My faith is in you

BELINDA looks up at JAMIE.

JAMIE
(singing)
To bring me through
I have one question

CHOIR
(singing)
I wonder

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL CAMPUS. DAY.

CHOIR
(off screen, singing)
I wonder...

Their song fades and is replaced by Noogie's "Friday On My Mind." Students cover the campus, girls do flips.

Monday morning feels so bad
Everybody seems to nag me...

A RANDOM GIRL strolls past LANDON, greeting him with a flirty smile. He returns the grin. He's sitting down, surrounded by his pals. ERIC, TRACIE, and WALKER stand; DEAN is on the left of him sucking on a straw, and BELINDA is on the right, placing his crutches down since LANDON was momentarily distracted.

ERIC
So, how's the leg, man?

LANDON
It's uh, it's good.

TRACIE applies foundation.

TRACIE
I can't believe you were in jail.

LANDON kinda shrugs.

ERIC
So, I mean, what'd you tell 'em?

DEAN takes a swig of Coke. I honestly think he could care less what happened to LANDON.

LANDON
Oh, I just said it was a nice night for a drive, ended up hangin' out at the cement factory, found Gephardt, you know, tried to give him some help, got a little spooked, then I figured I oughta leave before they thought I had anything to do with it and I split.

ERIC
Gotta hand it to you, man. You're a Jedi Master of bullshit, man.

They bump fists all macho like and LANDON chuckles. BELINDA watches the two, smiling.

TRACIE
(derisively)
Damn, that Jamie Sullivan sure has style.

LANDON and BELINDA both turn to see the "style" TRACIE's looking at. DEAN goes back to sucking on his straw.

BELINDA
Yeah. I wore that dress in the fourth grade.

JAMIE is carrying a box filled with stuff. She's walking towards the school just minding her own business.

ERIC
Hey, it's the quiet ones you gotta watch out for. I mean, hey man, she might put it on a brother like a poptart.

Everyone cracks up, except for BELINDA, who looks insulted as though he directed that comment towards her. Meanwhile, audiences everywhere wonder what the hell ERIC means.

ERIC
A little maintinence, she might not look too bad, you know.

JAMIE is now passing by them.

BELINDA
(to Jamie)
Nice sweater.

JAMIE stops.

JAMIE
(sweetly)
Thank you.

LANDON looks at her. She looks back. ERIC tries very unsuccessfully to suppress his giggles. JAMIE leaves. They all burst into laughter as soon as she's gone, except BELINDA and TRACIE (who watches her go).

ERIC
(mocking Jamie)
'Thank you.'

More laughter. Whatever.

CUT TO:

INT. PRINCIPAL KELLY'S OFFICE. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON jangles his keys noisily and impatiently. PRINCIPAL KELLY sets two empty beer bottles on his desk. LANDON glances from them to the principal like, "WTF?" The principal sets two more empty beer bottles on the desk and leans back in his chair.

PRINCIPAL KELLY
A student claims you were drinking on school property Saturday night. Lucky for you, Clay Gephardt isn't talking. The owners of the factory aren't pressing trespassing charges. At least not today. I told 'em I'd arrange approriate punishment.

LANDON
(bored)
What, are you gonna expel me?

PRINCIPAL KELLY
Not yet. Besides attending all your regular classes, you will help our janitorial staff after school.

LANDON
For pay.

Hee! I love the way LANDON's mind works.

PRINCIPAL KELLY
For the inner satisfaction it brings.

That really seems to piss LANDON off.

PRINCIPAL KELLY
On Saturday mornings, you will tutor disadvantaged students at our sister school. And finally, you will participate in the drama club's final event.

LANDON
The spring play?

PRINCIPAL KELLY nods smugly. LANDON gives him a dirty look.

PRINCIPAL KELLY
It's time for you to start experiencing other things. Start spending time with other kinds of people.

Skycopter 9's "Anything You Want" kicks up on the soundtrack.

PRINCIPAL KELLY
Don't blow it, Landon.

Damn. Shane sure does look hot when he's angry.

CUT TO:

INT. STARS AND PLANETS. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON leans on a crutch for support as he sweeps the floor. The building is filled with students. JAMIE is there as an instructor. LANDON's got his headphones on. He's listening to Skycopter 9's "Anything You Want." She's holding up something for a small audience.

JAMIE
This is a very simple device made of plastic wrap, a coat hanger, and white-out. Does anyone know what it is?

LANDON
It's a star friend.

She looks over at him. He gazes back. (I love the way this is lit. The light's all shining down on him and his pose is sexalicious.) She's surprised he knew that. She turns back to her students.

JAMIE
This is a star friend and it will help you locate stars and planets with your naked eye.

ERIC, DEAN, and WALKER enter the building. DEAN mocks LANDON sweeping.

JAMIE
Mercury and Jupiter can be seen just over the West Southwestern horizon after sunset.

LANDON spots his friends and smiles. The three boys pass by JAMIE. DEAN leans towards her.

DEAN
Bet you could see angels up there flying around.

JAMIE stops her lecture to look at him. ERIC laughs. The boys continue to LANDON. DEAN and LANDON greet all macho handshake and hug.

JAMIE
In fact, there are some things that could be called miraculous.

They direct their attention towards her.

JAMIE
Einstein said the more he studied the universe, the more he believed in a higher power.

DEAN
Well, if there is a higher power, then... why is it He can't get you a new sweater?

ERIC laughs.

JAMIE
(sweetly)
He's too busy looking for your brain.

ERIC
Ohhh.

He speaks "spastically" according to my closed captioning. He laughs again. DEAN shoves him.

LANDON
Hey, laugh. It's a joke, man.

JAMIE returns to her lecture.

DEAN
Man, come on. Let's just get outta here.

He picks up LANDON's other crutch. LANDON's given up on sweeping and is leaning against the risers.

LANDON
I can't. Gotta stay.

ERIC
Come on, man. Principal Kelly's gone. Let's make some moves.

LANDON
Uh... I...

DEAN leans on the crutch imitating LANDON.

DEAN
Ah. C'mon. Come on.

He hobbles off. (Hey, uh, thief much?) LANDON scowls.

ERIC
Come on, man.

He follows DEAN. JAMIE picks up a book in the background.

WALKER
I don't know. The custodian thing kinda suits you, you know. It works.

He goes to join the other two.

LANDON
Oh. Well, thanks buddy. Thank you.

JAMIE looks up and stares at LANDON.

Hey you, gotta get yourself together...

LANDON turns to look at her. She looks down. He looks away and walks off. JAMIE goes back to teaching. She flips to a page in the book she's holding.

JAMIE
If you look at this chart right here you'll see Halley's comet.

CUT TO:

EXT. BELINDA'S HOUSE. NIGHT.

LANDON pulls up alongside BELINDA's house in the station wagon. He stops the car.

LANDON
Okay. So, I'll see you at school.

BELINDA
Well, my parents aren't home if you wanna come inside.

LANDON sighs.

LANDON
Come on, Belinda. Nothin's changed.

BELINDA
I know. I just thought that...

LANDON
It's over.

BELINDA
(agreeing)
Yeah. Whatever.

She sighs loudly and exits the car. She slams the door and walks back to her house with her arms folded across her chest.

LANDON
(quietly; to himself)
O...kay.

He drives off.

FADE TO BLACK.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. MORNING.

MRS. CARTER is trying (unsuccessfully) to wake LANDON up.

MRS. CARTER
(sweetly)
Good morning, Landon.
(slight pause)
Landon.

He squints, but doesn't wake up.

MRS. CARTER
Wake up. Come on. Up, up, up, up!

LANDON's eyes open suddenly. He groans. Beck's "Where It's At" kicks up on the soundtrack.

MRS. CARTER
Up.

LANDON
(mumbling)
It's Saturday. No school.

He shuts his eyes.

MRS. CARTER
Tutoring.

LANDON opens his eyes again slowly.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD. MORNING. CONTINUOUS.

A bus drives along a pretty much deserted road.

CUT TO:

EXT. SISTER SCHOOL. MORNING. CONTINUOUS.

The bus stops in front of a one-story building and opens its doors.

CUT TO:

INT. SISTER SCHOOL. MORNING. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON is attempting to play tutor, but his student is clearly bored. In the background, JAMIE seems to be having more success with hers.

LANDON
Okay, let's try this again.

He pulls the book closer to his student and points at something on the page, asking:

LANDON
Which of these are similar triangles? This one or that one, huh?

No reply. The bored kid, LUIS, taps his pencil, annoyed.

LANDON
What do you think?

LUIS stands up and gripes:

LUIS
Man, I think this is bullshit!

JAMIE and her student look up to see him leave, surprised. JAMIE turns to look at LANDON. Her student watches her.

LANDON
(to himself)
That makes two of us.

JAMIE finally looks away. LANDON shuts the book.

CUT TO:

INT. BUS. AFTERNOON.

LANDON shuts his CD player and Onesidezero's "Tapwater" blares through his headphones as he looks at nothing in particular, brooding. JAMIE watches him from her seat a few rows ahead on the other side of the bus. After a moment of staring, she finally gets up and goes over to him. He looks up at her like, "WTF? What is she doing here?" She sits down and smiles at him.

JAMIE
Hey.

LANDON ignores her and looks out the window.

JAMIE
Do you wanna buy some raffle tickets? I'm trying to raise enough money so we can buy Jefferson some new computers.

LANDON turns to her to simply answer:

LANDON
No.

He goes back to looking out the window. JAMIE tries again:

JAMIE
So I saw you in there with Luis. And I know it can be very difficult, but maybe you should try backing into it from somewhere else.

She waits for his response. He doesn't say anything. JAMIE still doesn't give up on him.

JAMIE
Are you gonna go visit Clay Gephardt?

Nothing.

JAMIE
That would be a 'no'. You do know that they moved him from the hospital to that rehab place on Oak Street?

LANDON's had enough. He tears off his headphones and snaps angrily:

LANDON
Is this your idea of small talk or something? Because if it is, your social skills need some work, okay? No one forced him to jump.

JAMIE
It's called peer pressure.

LANDON
And how do you know about that? You read it in your precious book?

JAMIE looks down at the Holy Bible in her lap and shuts her eyes for a second. When she re-opens them, she answers:

JAMIE
Please don't pretend like you know me, okay?

LANDON
But I do. I do. We have all the same classes in the same school since Kindergarten. Why, you're Jamie Sullivan.

He smiles at her viciously.

LANDON
You sit at lunch table seven, which isn't exactly the reject table, but it's definitely in self-exile territory. You have exactly one sweater. You like to look at your feet when you walk. Oh, and yeah, and for fun, you like to tutor on the weekends and hang out with the cool kids from the Stars and Planets. Now how's that sound?

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
Thoroughly predictable.

She shrugs.

JAMIE
Nothing I haven't heard before.

LANDON
You don't care what people think about you?

JAMIE
No.

JAMIE rises to return to her seat. LANDON watches her go. He puts his headphones back on as "Tapwater" blares on the soundtrack.

Don't throw your life away
Everything will come to you
If you still believe in all those things you try to do
Don't throw your life away
Everything will come to you
If you still believe in all the things you try to do

CUT TO:

EXT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

A sign announcing 'Auditions' hangs over the entrance of the building. ERIC pulls up in his jeep. Soul Hooligan's "Numb In Both Lips" plays loudly on his stereo. LANDON is in the passenger side. ERIC parks the car in front of the school.

ERIC
Hey, I don't know what your problem is, man.

He reaches behind him to get LANDON's crutches as he continues:

ERIC
Miss Garber got some nice hooters goin' on, man.

LANDON
Bullshit.

He takes his crutches from ERIC.

LANDON
Thanks.

LANDON opens the door and gets out of the jeep.

ERIC
I just can't wait to really see you in some stage make-up. That's gonna be kinda cool.

He chuckles. LANDON shuts the door and leans in to remind him:

LANDON
Just be back in an hour, okay? Don't flake.

ERIC
Hey man, tell 'em maybe do like West Side Story, you know. We get that nice big booty lookin' girl from Selena, you know.

He positions his hands like he's making a declaration and announces dramatically:

ERIC
Maria! Maria!

LANDON strolls off, smiling.

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

MRS. GARBER
This year's spring musical is a story of burning passions and blazing tommyguns written by our very own Eddie Zimmerhoff.

She stands in front the students involved with the play (who sit in chairs against the wall). Everyone turns to look at EDDIE, who smiles.

MRS. GARBER
With words and music by Jamie Sullivan. It follows the rise and fall of Tommy 'the Gun' Thornton in prohibitionary New York. Eddie, perhaps you -- Mr. Carter, better late than never.

LANDON scowls in greeting, leaning on his crutches for support.

MRS. GARBER
Please join us.

LANDON
Sure.

He makes his way over to a seat on the right side of the room. JAMIE eyes him curiously. EDDIE's not looking thrilled.

MRS. GARBER
Now then, let's see, Jamie will be our Alicia, the mysterious club singer.

LANDON glances at JAMIE (who's looking very, very happy about her part) before shutting his eyes and leaning back against the wall.

MRS. GARBER
Sally will be playing Caroline.

JAMIE
(whispers, smiling; to Sally who sits next to her)
Congratulations.

MRS. GARBER
And Landon will read Tommy Thornton.

LANDON's eyes open immediately. He smiles.

LANDON
Wha -- ?

He chuckles.

LANDON
No. No. See, I -- I didn't plan on acting or anything.

(He's so cute in this scene!)

CUT TO:

All the play people sit in a circle on chairs. LANDON drums his fingers on his play booklet as SALLY reads:

SALLY
'When did you know, Tommy?'

LANDON, looking mightily annoyed, turns to her to say:

LANDON
(blankly)
'Know what?'

SALLY
'That we were in love?'

LANDON sighs and the two both look down at their booklets.

LANDON
(reading the lines with absolutely no emotion whatsover)
'Love? Uh... baby, believe me, you don't wanna go falling in love with a guy like me.'

JAMIE watches him.

SALLY
'It's too late, Tommy. I'm crazy about you. I'm breathing it, drinking it all in. Aren't you?'

LANDON laughs slightly.

LANDON
'Yeah, I -- I don't know what I'm drinking, dollface, but if this is love, pour me another glass?'

He chuckles again. EDDIE looks like he wants to murder him. Bwa!

MRS. GARBER
Mr. Carter, are you trying to be bad at this?

LANDON
Oh, no. It just comes naturally.

He grins. Everyone laughs.

MRS. GARBER
All right, everybody, let's go to the end.

JAMIE finally stops staring at LANDON, looking down and shaking her head, smiling.

CUT TO:

EXT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON's waiting impatiently for ERIC, propped up on his crutches. EDDIE and JAMIE are in the background walking side by side down the steps of the building.

EDDIE
Don't even pretend like you're not gonna be great. I mean, you're so pretty.

JAMIE
(quickly)
Okay. I'll see you tomorrow.

EDDIE
All right. See ya.

He leaves. LANDON's all grumpy. JAMIE notices him and goes to join him, exchanging "bye"s with another girl on her way. LANDON glances at her like, "Ugh, not her again," and faces ahead.

JAMIE
So, would it kill you to try?

LANDON
Yup. And I'm too young to die.

JAMIE sighs quietly.

JAMIE
Okay, so you don't care about classes or graduating, but you like school because you're popular and you'll never be on top again.

LANDON
That's thoroughly predictable.

JAMIE
Your act only works on an audience.

LANDON ponders this as she goes. He checks his watch and looks up. JAMIE gets in her car, buckles up, and revs the engine. LMAO. From the expression on her face and the fact he's standing right in front of her car, you almost think she wouldn't have any problem running him over. LANDON hops out of the way and heads for the driver's side of her car. JAMIE rolls down her window.

LANDON
Are you feeling Christian?

He gives her his best puppydog eyes "Please?" face. Well, how could she refuse?

CUT TO:

JAMIE's driving.

JAMIE
(off screen)
Seatbelt.

LANDON gives her a look as though she's just asked him to jump into a tub full of live crabs. He sighs as he complies with her request. JAMIE smiles and turns on the radio. Rachael Lampa's "If You Believe" fills the car.

I close my eyes...

LANDON gives JAMIE another look as if to say, "There's no way in hell I'm listening to this." He changes the station. Extra Fancy's "No Mercy" blares.

No mercy...

JAMIE switches it back.

Do you believe that dreams come true? There's one that's waiting --

LANDON goes back to his song.

Too late...

Pauseworthy moment. LANDON has smiley eyes and covers his mouth with his hand, trying to conceal the fact that he's pleased he's won. Cuuute.

JAMIE
I forfeit.

LANDON
Thank you.

JAMIE
42.

LANDON
42? What do you -- what do you mean, 42?

JAMIE
42 is befriend somebody you don't like.

She looks at him. He's all, "O...kay."

JAMIE
It's a to-do list I have exempt from my life.

LANDON
What, like getting a new personality?

(Ha. Jeez, he's mean.)

JAMIE
Mm. Spend a year in the peace corp. Make a medical discovery.

LANDON
That's ambitious.

JAMIE
Be in two places at once. Get a tattoo.

LANDON
What's number one?

JAMIE
I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

LANDON chuckles. He looks out the window and spots the party posse hanging out at some Burgers place by ERIC's jeep. LANDON glances from JAMIE to them all, "Uh oh." TRACIE, WALKER, and DEAN chat amongst themselves (and ERIC is sitting in the jeep). LANDON leans forward so they won't see him. JAMIE looks out his window and then at him knowingly.

No mercy
Don't worry, I won't kill you!

They pass by his friends and LANDON gets up again.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S PORCH. DAY.

LANDON and ERIC are rehearsing the school play 'Thornton's Way'.

ERIC
(reading flatly)
'I've come to see if you're ready.'

LANDON leans on his crutch for support as he reads from the booklet.

LANDON
'Take a good look, lady, 'cause the only thing I'm ready for is a dirt nap.'

ERIC
(still reading badly)
'Ready to look inside your heart, Tom Thornton?'

LANDON sets his crutch down as ERIC continues:

ERIC
'Your words have been heard and not just by me.'

ERIC places the crutch underneath the bench he's sitting on. LANDON tries reciting the lines without the help of the booklet.

LANDON
'When you walked into...'

He can't remember. ERIC encourages him to go on.

LANDON
Aw, shit.

He opens the booklet.

LANDON
(reading)
'When you walked out of the rain and into my club,

He snaps the book shut.

LANDON
That wasn't just a coincidence, was it?'

ERIC
'Nothing's coincidence, baby.'

He shuts his book.

ERIC
'You know you're the only one who can make me sing.'

He jumps up suddenly and starts humping the air.

ERIC
Oh yeah, Miss Garber! Oh, you gonna put Eric in all your plays.

LANDON looks the other way trying to keep a straight face. ERIC flips on his back and humps the air some more.

ERIC
(high-pitched)
Eric, I'm gonna put you in all my plays!

LANDON
Come on. Come on, man. Come on.

ERIC's laughing.

LANDON
(serious)
Do you know I got 3 weeks to memorize this stuff?

ERIC
Man, you couldn't pull this off if you had 3 months, man. DeNiro couldn't even make this shit work.

LANDON
Look, I didn't write it, okay?

ERIC
No, but you're the one who's gonna make a jackass outta hisself in front of the whole town, the school, your friends...

LANDON
Look, I don't have a choice. So, would you just help me out, please?

ERIC stands up and places a hand on LANDON's shoulder.

ERIC
You know I'm just bustin' on you, right? I'm gonna be there opening night, front row, and you could count on it. With tomatoes.

ERIC laughs. LANDON smiles.

LANDON
Thanks, man.

They do a li'l macho man handshake. MRS. CARTER pulls up in the station wagon and exits, her arms full of paper bags.

MRS. CARTER
Landon? Boys, can you help me with these groceries?

LANDON
Yeah.

ERIC
No problem.

They toss their scripts aside on the bench and go to help her out.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY. DAY.

LANDON emerges from a classroom and shuts the door behind him. He looks around to see if anyone he knows is there before approaching Jamie who is emptying her locker.

LANDON
Jamie.

JAMIE glances behind her and sighs. She turns back to her locker.

JAMIE
(smiling)
What do you want, Carter? I've known you for years, you've never been the first one to come up and say hello.

LANDON
I need help with my lines.

She shuts her locker and faces him, her arms full of books.

JAMIE
(surprised)
Landon Carter's asking me for help?

LANDON
Yeah.

JAMIE
(nods)
Okay. I'll pray for you.

She goes on her merry way. LANDON follows her.

LANDON
(smiling)
Jamie, no, look. You really need help.

JAMIE
You've obviously never asked anybody for help before, right?

LANDON
(under his breath)
No.

RANDOM GIRL
(off screen)
Hey Landon.

LANDON doesn't pay any attention to her. Two girls pass by them.

JAMIE
A request like yours requires flattery and groveling. It can't be all about you. It has to be for the common good of everybody.

LANDON
It is for the common good.

They stop walking. JAMIE turns to face him.

LANDON
Okay, Eddie Zimmerhoff deserves the best.

He sighs.

LANDON
Please?

JAMIE
Okay. One condition though, Carter.

LANDON
What's that?

JAMIE
You have to promise you won't fall in love with me.

He chuckles.

LANDON
(very Shane West)
That's not a problem.

JAMIE
Okay. I'll see you this afternoon after school.

LANDON
Okay.

She leaves. He sighs again and heads in the opposite direction.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S KITCHEN. AFTERNOON.

JAMIE is making tea as REVEREND SULLIVAN paces around the kitchen.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Landon Carter's coming here? The boy's dangerous. He's careless. He's the worst kind of bully.

JAMIE smiles slightly.

JAMIE
Daddy, what about forgiveness? You know, I -- I thought we had discussed that I was gonna be able to decide how I wanted to spend my time in my life.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Well, it's him I don't trust, not you.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S PORCH. AFTERNOON. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON rings the doorbell. His play booklet is folded in the front pocket of his pants.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S KITCHEN. AFTERNOON. CONTINUOUS.

JAMIE looks up from her stirring. She grabs a towel to dry her hands.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S PORCH. AFTERNOON. CONTINUOUS.

The front door creaks open.

LANDON
Uh, hey.

JAMIE
Hi.

LANDON
So, you gonna keep me out here all afternoon or what?

JAMIE smiles.

JAMIE
Come on in.

The two bump arms as he enters. JAMIE shuts the door.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S FOYER. AFTERNOON. CONTINUOUS.

JAMIE
My script is in my room, so I'll be right down.

She starts up the stairs.

JAMIE
Make yourself at home.

LANDON
Oh, yeah.

LANDON watches her go, then mumbles to himself:

LANDON
That's not likely.

He walks into the living room, checking out the pictures on the mantle and on top of the piano. He turns to the other side of the room, tilting his head to get a better look at a small Jesus Christ statue.

LANDON
Wow. That is one scary lookin'...

He spins around to see REVEREND SULLIVAN standing there.

LANDON
Jes --

REVEREND SULLIVAN
No, Jamie's father. Hello, Mr. Carter. I understand you've managed to win the lead in the school play. Congratulations.

LANDON
Listen, thanks for letting me come over and run lines with Jamie.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
I didn't let you.

LANDON
Oh.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
It's a school night. Let's get one thing straight, Mr. Carter. You think that on Sundays, I don't see you from where I stand.

LANDON looks at Jamie's father, growing increasingly uncomfortable.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
But I see you. I'll be in my office just here.

He leaves the way he entered the room. LANDON's all, "Ughhh."

JAMIE
(off screen)
Ready?

LANDON
Yeah. Let's go.

Matthew Hager's "Enough" kicks up on the soundtrack as LANDON walks over to her.

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL CAMPUS. DAY.

LANDON's party posse -- minus LANDON -- are all there: WALKER, ERIC, BELINDA, TRACIE, and DEAN. ERIC and DEAN do the handshake greeting. ERIC moves on to hug BELINDA.

BELINDA
And how are you?

WALKER and DEAN do the handshake thing. LANDON strolls up casually. Matthew Hager's "Enough" is still raging on the soundtrack. DEAN turns to see LANDON.

DEAN
Landon! Where've you been?

LANDON
Nowhere, man.

They do the macho high-five-y handshake then lean in all close.

DEAN
Hey, come here. Listen.

LANDON
What's up?

DEAN throws an arm over LANDON's shoulder.

DEAN
Are we cool?

LANDON
Yeah, sure.

DEAN nods. The bell rings. The two boys walk on up to class.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD. NIGHT.

LANDON's driving the Camaro, all angry. Matthew Hager's "Enough" is still blaring on the soundtrack.

I can't stand it

He slows the car when he spots JAMIE making her way into the cemetary.

There's something wrong here

LANDON
What the hell?

There's something wrong

He cuts the ignition and hops out of the car. He ambles down the hill to join her in the cemetary.

LANDON
Hey!

She spins around, perplexed. They both look at each other wondering the same thing.

LANDON
What are you doing here?

JAMIE
I should ask you the same question.

LANDON
Well, do you normally walk by yourself in the cemetary at night?

She shrugs.

JAMIE
Maybe.

She turns to go.

LANDON
Where you goin'?

She looks back and shining her flashlight in his eyes answers simply:

JAMIE
Come and see.

He hobbles after her.

CUT TO:

JAMIE sets a telescope down.

LANDON
Okay, what is that?

JAMIE
This is my telescope. I built it when I was twelve.

LANDON looks somewhat impressed.

JAMIE
Take a look.

LANDON peers into the telescope.

LANDON
Saturn. Very cool.

JAMIE
Yeah. I'm planning on building a larger one so I can see the comet Hyakutake. It comes this spring, but nobody knows when it's coming back.

LANDON
(sarcastic)
Ah. Nature's miracles.

Hurt, JAMIE looks at the ground.

LANDON
I get it.

JAMIE
Get what?

LANDON motions to the telescope.

LANDON
That you're into all this stuff.

JAMIE
This... stuff. I -- I have my beliefs, I have faith, but don't you?

LANDON
No. There's too much bad shit in this world.

JAMIE
Without suffering there'd be no compassion.

LANDON
Yeah, well tell that to those who suffer.

JAMIE sighs and shakes her head.

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL. DAY.

Two students exits the doors.

ERIC
(off screen)
Oh, my goodness.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY. DAY.

LANDON and all his pals -- DEAN, ERIC, TRACIE, WALKER, and BELINDA -- hang around the lockers. ERIC checks out two girls as they pass the group of friends.

ERIC
See, this is what I love about early spring.

DEAN holds ERIC back.

ERIC
Where those legs been hiding all this winter?

LMAO. Too funny. Even the girls are checking out the legs. BELINDA laughs.

BELINDA
She's trashy.

TRACIE notices someone strolling up.

TRACIE
Well, if it isn't the Virgin Mary.

LANDON turns to see who she's referring to.

DEAN
Oh, dude, here comes your leading lady.

LANDON braces himself as JAMIE approaches.

JAMIE
Hey Carter. So, I'll see you after school?

DEAN and TRACIE look at LANDON waiting for his response.

LANDON
Well, in your dreams.

ERIC winces. JAMIE looks at him -- not hurt or angry or upset -- just like, "Well, okay." LANDON smirks at her. ERIC laughs.

ERIC
Ouch.

JAMIE kinda nods and goes on her way. LANDON's face falls.

ERIC
(high-pitched)
Hi. Where's your sweater?

LANDON smiles. DEAN laughs. The bell rings. DEAN and TRACIE kiss and then she goes. LANDON and DEAN grab their bags.

LANDON
Let's get outta here.

Everyone makes their way to their classes.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE. LATER. SAME DAY.

LANDON parks the station wagon in front of JAMIE's house. He's not happy. He cuts the ignition and exits the car.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S LIVING ROOM. SAME DAY.

JAMIE is practicing "Only Hope" on the piano. REVEREND SULLIVAN sits, reading. They both look up when the doorbell rings.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S PORCH. SAME DAY.

LANDON rings the doorbell again. The door swings open. JAMIE isn't pleased to see him. LANDON looks at her guiltily. Before he can say a word she shuts the door. LANDON leans against her house.

LANDON
Come on, Jamie. Open the door. Please.

He knocks. The door re-opens. He backs up.

LANDON
Whoa.

JAMIE joins him on the porch.

JAMIE
What do you want?

She shuts the door behind her.

LANDON
You're not in a good mood.

JAMIE
You don't miss a thing.

LANDON
Listen, Jamie, I was hopin' we could run lines together.

JAMIE
(nods)
Okay, but just not so anybody knows, right?

LANDON
Well, I just figured we could surprise everyone with how good I get.

JAMIE
Like we could be secret friends?

She smiles. LANDON's face lights up.

LANDON
Exactly. Exactly. It's like you're reading my mind.

JAMIE
Great. Um. Maybe you could read mine.

Her face goes blank. His face falls. She turns to go back inside.

LANDON
Jamie. Jamie, I can't just be your friend.

JAMIE
Landon, look, I thought I saw something in you. Something good. But I was very wrong.

She shuts the door. LANDON sighs and heads down the steps.

LANDON
Jamie, DAMMIT!

The door suddenly swings open and REVEREND SULLIVAN steps onto the porch, mighty pissed off. LANDON turns back to look at him. REVEREND SULLIVAN has his hands placed on his hips. Cold's "No One" kicks up on the soundtrack.

LANDON
Sorry.

He walks off.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S HOUSE. NIGHT.

Cold's "No One" is still blaring.

I can't ever really believe

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON, laying on his side on his bed, is flipping through his yearbook unhappily. He finally lands on the page he's looking for. He stares down at JAMIE's picture. The caption reads:

Jamie Sullivan
Red Cross; Stars and
Planets; Drama Club

Ambition: To witness a miracle.

LANDON considers the ambition. He shuts the yearbook.

No one was sent to get me
And I'm all alone
No one was sent to get me
And I'm all alone
No one got left here
Well, I'm fine
No one got left here
Well, I'm fine
No one got left

CUT TO:

INT. SISTER SCHOOL. DAY.

LUIS twirls a basketball. LANDON sits on the table.

LANDON
You know the answer?

LUIS looks the other way, bored.

LANDON
Look, man, I know you know.

In the background, JAMIE teaches her student. LANDON sighs and stands up. He directs his attention out the window at the basketball court.

CUT TO:

EXT. BASKETBALL COURT. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON and LUIS stand a few feet apart from each other and several feet away from the basket. LUIS is still holding the basketball.

LANDON
Okay, it's you, me, and the basket. Okay, we form the three corners of a triangle. Now take a step towards the basket.

LUIS does so. At the exact same time, LANDON copies his move.

LANDON
Now am I at the same angle to you and the basket as before?

LUIS
Yeah.

LANDON
Are you?

LUIS
Yeah.

LANDON
So what did we just make?

LUIS
Uh... a similar triangle?

LANDON
Yes. Yes.

JAMIE walks over to the window to watch the two boys.

LANDON
Okay, make me an isosceles.

LUIS takes a huge step to the left.

LANDON
You got it. Two sides the same.

He smiles.

LANDON
Okay, enough of this. Let's play.

LUIS smiles and tosses the basketball to LANDON. New Radicals' "Mother, We Just Can't Get Enough" kicks up on the soundtrack. LANDON tosses the ball at the hoop and it goes in. After he retrieves the ball, he tosses it back to LUIS. JAMIE's seen what she wanted to see. She turns away from the window.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON paces back and forth reading from 'Thornton's Way'. A pencil rests behind his ear and one is in his mouth. (Hee.) He takes the pencil out of his mouth.

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

EDDIE observes, playbook in hand, as MRS. GARBER helps position LANDON and SALLY for the upcoming production.

There's somethin' about you...

CUT TO:

JAMIE steps from behind a curtain. SALLY lightly taps LANDON's right shoulder.

CUT TO:

SALLY pushes LANDON's left shoulder, just a tad more aggressive.

CUT TO:

SALLY shoves LANDON's right shoulder again, now standing on the other side of him.

CUT TO:

SALLY goes back to her original position, and goes to push LANDON again when MRS. GARBER stops her.

Tears me inside out whenever you're around

CUT TO:

MRS. GARBER demonstrates her idea of the perfect shove -- quick, rough.

There's somethin' about you...

CUT TO:

SALLY tries again.

CUT TO:

MRS. GARBER shows SALLY how to approach him, all dramatic.

That makes me fly

CUT TO:

SALLY mimics MRS. GARBER's walk.

You're a heart attack
Just the kind I like

CUT TO:

MRS. GARBER pulls LANDON aside.

There's somethin' about your kiss
Haunting and strange

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON reads from the book aloud. He takes the pencil from behind his ear to write something down.

It made me feel so good
I get a feeling
You get a feeling

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

MRS. GARBER is explaining more play stuff to LANDON.

We get a feeling like we're alive

CUT TO:

SALLY shoves LANDON again. And again. And again.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON reads more from the play and looks up.

Oh, mother...

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

MRS. GARBER positions JAMIE in a chair. LANDON watches them, a cute as hell bored expression on his face, his head resting in his hand.

We just can't get enough
We just can't get enough

CUT TO:

MRS. GARBER shows JAMIE how to walk to the bar.

CUT TO:

JAMIE mimics MRS. GARBER's walk to the bar.

And lover,

CUT TO:

LANDON and JAMIE watch MRS. GARBER stroll past them. JAMIE cracks up.

We just gotta get it up
We just gotta get it up

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON looks down at his outfit, reciting more lines.

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

MRS. GARBER positions JAMIE's head and JAMIE's eyes fall on LANDON, whose back is turned to her.

This world ain't got too much time

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON takes a huge bite from a sandwich he now has, back to pacing and reading.

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

MRS. GARBER positions JAMIE's head to face sideways. LANDON checks JAMIE out. Haha. His face kinda reads like, "Hm. Not bad."

But baby, I'm fine
'Cause baby, you're mine

CUT TO:

MRS. GARBER places JAMIE's hands as though she's about to pray.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON marks something down in his playbook with his pencil.

CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. DAY.

LANDON and SALLY are stylin' in their costumes. LANDON sets a drink down.

We just gotta get it up

SALLY shoves him once more. And then once more after that.

Come on and give up
You better give up

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

LANDON recites some more from the play.

Give up your life

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY. DAY.

Amidst the crowd, LANDON and JAMIE slo-mo pass each other by, looking at one another as they go. Oh, yah.

There's somethin' about you
You tear me inside out whenever you're around
There's somethin' about you

JAMIE looks back at LANDON.

That makes me fly
You're a heart attack
Just the kind I like

JAMIE faces forward again and keeps walking.

There's somethin' about your kiss

CUT TO:

EXT. REHAB PLACE ON OAK STREET. DAY.

LANDON observes a guy on a wheelchair on his way to the building.

Haunting and strange
It made me feel so good...

CUT TO:

INT. CLAY'S ROOM INSIDE THE REHAB PLACE. DAY.

The TV is on. It replaces New Radicals. The show is something in black & white and very loud. CLAY watches it as though he could care less what's on. LANDON enters the room, his head hung in shame. CLAY acknowledges his presence then turns back to the TV.

LANDON
I came to say I'm sorry.

CLAY shrugs.

CLAY
Well, you did. You feel better?

LANDON
No. I feel like shit.

CLAY
You know what? I -- I actually thought I wanted to be your friend.

He smiles and shakes his head.

CLAY
And now I have no idea why. No idea.

On the TV something blows up.

LANDON
I made that jump once. And thought I was a badass. I remember actually saying that I -- I meant to bellyflop.

CLAY
Did it hurt?

LANDON
Like hell.

CLAY
(coldly)
Good.

He smiles slightly. LANDON returns the smile.

LANDON
So, I guess I'll see you at school then.

CUT TO:

EXT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. NIGHT.

A 'Thornton's Way' banner hangs over the door. People shuffle inside the building.

Part Two
CUT TO:

INT. BEAUFORT COMMUNITY CENTER. NIGHT.

People rise from their seats. The play has ended. MRS. CARTER approaches LANDON.

MRS. CARTER
Honey, I couldn't believe it. What a transformation.

LANDON smiles. She hugs him and he chuckles.

MRS. CARTER
Oh.

LANDON
(embarrassed)
Thank you, but please stop.

MRS. CARTER
Don't be home too late.

LANDON
Okay.

He turns and sees JAMIE and her father making their way out of the building. JAMIE is chatting with MRS. GARBER. Her hair (still curled) is pulled back in a sloppy ponytail. She's back in overalls. She wears no make-up. She's Jamie once again. REVEREND SULLIVAN gives LANDON a warning look as he follows her out. This doesn't phase LANDON, but before he can make his move towards her, EDDIE gets in his way.

EDDIE
Interesting rewrite you did out there tonight, Carter.

Blast. REVEREND SULLIVAN and JAMIE are getting away.

LANDON
(impatiently)
Look, I do my best.

EDDIE
And uh, your acting didn't suck too bad, either.

LANDON nods.

EDDIE
Gotta go. Take it easy, man.

LANDON
Okay.

LANDON takes one step forward. MRS. GARBER steps up to congratulate him.

MRS. GARBER
(smiling)
Landon, you were marvelous.

LANDON
Thank you.

He smiles, then leaves her. She looks very pleased with how everything turned out. Ah. Finally. His chance to catch up to JAMIE. He joins the crowd exiting the building, but she's nowhere in sight.

MR. CARTER
(off screen)
Landon?

LANDON turns.

MR. CARTER
Fine performance, son.

LANDON clearly isn't happy to see him.

LANDON
What are you doin' here?

MR. CARTER
Your mother told me about it. I thought we might get a bite after the show.

LANDON
I'm not hungry.

He starts to leave.

MR. CARTER
Landon, don't walk away.

LANDON doesn't stop, replying:

LANDON
You taught me how.

MR. CARTER sighs.

CUT TO:

EXT. BAY. MINUTES BEFORE SUNRISE.

FADE TO:

EXT. BOAT DOCK. SUNRISE.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL LIBRARY. DAY.

LANDON enters the library hoping to find JAMIE. BELINDA and TRACIE are sitting at one of tables studying. BELINDA gets distracted by LANDON. She watches him as he scans the library.

TRACIE
(whispering)
Look who's here.

She turns to look at LANDON as well. LANDON is still searching the library. TRACIE, still whispering, tells BELINDA sharply:

TRACIE
Don't look at him.

BELINDA turns to TRACIE.

TRACIE
(quietly)
You don't want to stare too much.

LANDON leaves.

TRACIE
I guess he doesn't want to sit with us.

CUT TO:

INT. CAFETERIA. DAY.

It's lunchtime, but JAMIE isn't eating the food on the tray in front of her. She sits alone, reading. LANDON enters the cafeteria and invites himself to her table. She glances at him before returning to her book.

JAMIE
(matter-of-fact)
People can see.

LANDON
And that would ruin your reputation how?
(referring to the book)
What's that?

JAMIE holds it up so he can read the title. It's 'To Kill A Mockingbird'. Without looking up, she tells him:

JAMIE
I'm reading all the books on Mr. Rothman's list of contemporary American authors.

LANDON
And how many books are there?

JAMIE
A hundred. But then there's his British list and his European list.

LANDON nods.

LANDON
So, is this all on your list? To read all these books?

She ignores him and picks up her orange juice box, slurping loudly.

LANDON
Jamie. I'm tryin' here, okay? Maybe...
(gently)
Maybe I miss spending time with you.

She doesn't say anything, continuing to read her book.

LANDON
Maybe you inspire me.

She finally looks up and snaps:

JAMIE
Sounds like bull.

She shuts her book.

LANDON
Which part?

JAMIE
All of it.

LANDON
Well, it's not.

JAMIE
(icily)
Prove it.

She stands up taking her book and backpack with her and hurries out of the cafeteria. LANDON sighs, waits a moment, then gets up to bound after her.

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL STEPS. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

JAMIE rushes down the steps as fast as she can. LANDON's not far behind her.

LANDON
Jamie!

She keeps speedwalking.

LANDON
Jamie!

JAMIE
You don't know the first thing about being someone's friend.

LANDON
I don't wanna just be your friend.

JAMIE
You don't know what you want.

LANDON
Well, neither do you, okay? Maybe you're just too scared that someone might actually wanna be with you.

JAMIE
And why would that scare me?

She's finally stopped and has turned to face him.

LANDON
Because then you wouldn't be able to hide behind your books or your frickin' telecope or your faith.

She wheels around to resume walking.

LANDON
No. No.

He grabs her arm to spin her back to face him again.

LANDON
You know the real reason why you're scared ... is 'cause you wanna be with me, too.

JAMIE gives him a look that suggests he's right. Without answering him, she turns and heads for her car. LANDON throws his hands in the air in defeat and watches her walk away, dejected.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S GARAGE. DAY.

LANDON's fixin' up the Camaro. ERIC places a CD in the CD player and Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On" grooves on the soundtrack.

ERIC
Aw, yeah. We gonna get this party up in here jumpin' real right. Come on.

LANDON shoots ERIC a dirty look and goes back to working on his car. ERIC "dances" -- haha.

LANDON
Can we turn down Soul Train just a notch, all right? Some of us are actually trying to work.

ERIC
You really know how to bust a robot's groove up in here, man.

LANDON chuckles.

ERIC
It's all good 'cause you know what? We gonna get Club Landon and Club Eric really jumpin' up in here. What do we got here?

He changes the CD. Jars of Clay's "Flood" replaces Missy.

ERIC
Oh ye -- ohhh. Whoa. Okay, okay.

He grabs a Coke and sits down.

ERIC
You're not feelin' my hip hop here, but um, what the hell is this, man?

He takes a sip of Coke.

LANDON
(matter-of-fact)
Jamie lent it to me.

ERIC
Mm. Now she's got you listening to her people's music.

LANDON
Okay, "her people"?

ERIC
Yeah, uh, her --

He sets the Coke down and stands up.

ERIC
Bible huggin', Crucifix wearin', 'Honk if you love Jesus' people.

LANDON
She's not like that.

ERIC
Well, uh, you know you got uh, Belinda thinkin' that little lip action between you and Jamie was kinda real.

LANDON doesn't say anything. ERIC sighs.

ERIC
What's with you, man? It's like you don't even have time for your real friends anymore.

LANDON
I dunno, buddy. I'm just over it. I'm sick and tired of doing the same old shit all the time.

ERIC
This girl's changed you and you don't even know it, man.

LANDON laughs.

LANDON
All right, let me guess. Belinda say that, too?

ERIC
No.

LANDON looks at him.

ERIC
I did.

LANDON looks down.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S PORCH. NIGHT.

JAMIE sits on her porch swing reading. LANDON walks up her steps carrying a bag. She looks up at him.

JAMIE
You.

LANDON
Me.

He extends the bag for her to take. She looks at it curiously.

JAMIE
What is it?

LANDON
I got you somethin'.

He extends the bag once more. She accepts it this time.

JAMIE
Thank you.

LANDON
Well, I'll see you at school.

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
'kay.

LANDON goes. JAMIE opens the bag. She smiles. REVEREND SULLIVAN steps onto the porch.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Mr. Carter.

JAMIE holds up a pink sweater.

LANDON
Later, Reverend.

He leaves the porch. JAMIE laughs quietly, pleased, admiring her present from LANDON. REVEREND SULLIVAN makes his way over to her. LANDON's car starts up and is heard driving off. REVEREND SULLIVAN eyes the gift disapprovingly.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie.

He sits down beside her.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Boys like that...

He hesitates. JAMIE looks at her father waiting for him to continue.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
...they have expectations. You know the rules around here are not gonna change.

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
(sweetly)
Fine.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Now you might not care what I say or think, but you should care about God's opinion.

JAMIE smiles.

JAMIE
I think He wants me to be happy.
(slight pause)
Dad, it's just a sweater. I'm gonna go make us some dinner, okay?

She kisses his cheek then gets up. REVEREND SULLIVAN sighs.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S KITCHEN. NIGHT.

LANDON lifts the lid off a boiling pot on the stove. MRS. CARTER is sitting behind a counter behind him, shredding lettuce for a salad.

MRS. CARTER
Well, I talked to your dad today. He says he saw you at the play. For about ten seconds.

LANDON adds some spice to whatever's on the stove.

LANDON
Yeah. Sending a check once a month doesn't exactly make him your father.

He replaces the lid and puts the spice back. MRS. CARTER looks down.

MRS. CARTER
Landon, there are a lot of reasons...

LANDON
He left us, mom.

MRS. CARTER
You need to forgive him, too.

LANDON considers this.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY. DAY.

BELINDA and ERIC are walking along. She hands him a picture from the stack she's carrying. WALKER approaches them.

ERIC
Jamie Sullivan! Oh me, oh my. Look at Jamie Sullivan. She was lookin' hot in that play.

BELINDA hands WALKER a picture also since he's all curious.

ERIC
I don't know, man.

BELINDA
She does not look hot.

WALKER
She looked hot in -- Yeah, I would have to say, (he mumbles here) ... she looked hot.

BELINDA
Wait, wait.

ERIC
What?

BELINDA
Oh, I have the best idea.

FADE TO:

INT. COMPUTER LAB. DAY.

TRACIE, ERIC, and DEAN are jacking up a picture of JAMIE on the computer. ERIC erases JAMIE's hair.

DEAN
Can you do something like, move it?

ERIC chuckles.

FADE TO:

EXT. SCHOOL STEPS. DAY.

TRACIE passes out fliers to random students passing by.

TRACIE
Take one.

FADE TO:

INT. COMPUTER LAB. DAY.

More screwball computer "fun" with the trio.

ERIC
All right, let me stop it for a second. All right, check it out.

FADE TO:

EXT. SCHOOL STEPS. DAY.

TRACIE and WALKER both stand with fliers. DEAN approaches.

TRACIE
Oh, hey. Look at this.

She hands him a flier. He seems pleased.

TRACIE
Here.

She gives another flier to some random student. DEAN kisses her cheek and goes. TRACIE continues passing out fliers.

TRACIE
Take one. Look.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY. DAY.

JAMIE rounds a corner, walking alone. BELINDA makes her move.

BELINDA
Jamie.

JAMIE turns, somewhat surprised.

BELINDA
Hi.

JAMIE
Hi.

BELINDA
Listen, I just want you to know. No hard feelings. Landon and I are way over.

JAMIE
I really don't know what you're talking about.

She bites her bottom lip and looks the other way.

BELINDA
Jamie.

JAMIE once again looks at her.

BELINDA
You'd be so beautiful if you knew how to do your make-up.

She sighs.

BELINDA
Come on.

She grabs JAMIE's hands and leads her towards the cafeteria.

BELINDA
Eat lunch with me.

She flashes her a smile.

JAMIE
Okay.

They enter the cafeteria.

BELINDA
You want a tic tac?

JAMIE
No thanks.

BELINDA
Okay.

BELINDA casually strolls over to a table and picks up a flier. JAMIE is suddenly aware of all the people laughing over the fliers.

BELINDA
Wow.

JAMIE looks down at the flier BELINDA holds.

BELINDA
Is that you?

The picture is obviously fake. JAMIE's face is pasted on a girl's bikini-clad body with the caption: VIRGIN MARY?

BELINDA
Nice bod.

She looks at JAMIE viciously. JAMIE takes the picture in and looks around at everyone, realizing they're all laughing at her. She breathes noisily, her eyes tearing up. After a moment, not able to take any more humiliation, she turns to bolt and crashes right into LANDON who catches her in his arms.

LANDON
(softly)
Whoa.

LANDON holds on to her as she shuts her eyes and buries her head into his shoulder. He exhales a shaky breath.

LANDON
Look. This is about me, okay?

She opens her eyes to look up at him.

LANDON
This is not you.

He sets his bag down.

LANDON
Stay here.

She watches him walk away from her, tears still in her eyes. LANDON angrily snatches the flier from BELINDA's hands as he makes his way over to DEAN.

DEAN
Hey, man.

He takes the flier from LANDON.

DEAN
God, no wonder you've been keepin' her locked up, man. This -- I had no idea that this was underneath all that.

He laughs. LANDON shoves him roughly, completely pissed off. DEAN shoves him back.

TRACIE
Dean, stop it.

DEAN wheels around to face her.

DEAN
You stay out of this.

He turns back to LANDON.

DEAN
This is --

LANDON doesn't let him finish, punching him in the face, looking at him loathingly. TRACIE comforts DEAN, but he's not finished fighting yet. Some RANDOM GUY tries to break the two of them up and DEAN pushes him away.

DEAN
(to Landon)
We're through.

LANDON
That's great.

DEAN
We are through.

LANDON turns away from him and walks back to JAMIE.

DEAN
We are through forever!

LANDON's expression changes to concern as he rejoins JAMIE. BELINDA looks at them unhappily. Jealous, jealous girl. LANDON cups JAMIE's face, asking her gently:

LANDON
Are you okay?

She nods.

DEAN
(off screen)
You made a mistake, Landon!

LANDON ignores him, his attention focused on JAMIE only.

LANDON
Are you sure? Let's get the hell outta here.

He picks up his bag and they leave.

DEAN
Hey! You're a little chickenshit!

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL STEPS. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON leads JAMIE down the steps, his arms around her. She's miserable, her face tear-stained. LANDON looks at her solicitiously.

LANDON
Baby, baby, I'm sorry, okay? They're animals, all right?

JAMIE shuts her eyes tightly.

LANDON
You want me to take you home?

She nods. He runs a hand through her hair.

LANDON
Okay. Let's get outta here.

He leads her off.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE. SAME DAY -- LATER.

LANDON's Camaro is parked in front of JAMIE's house.

LANDON
(off screen)
Are you sure you're okay?

JAMIE
(off screen)
Mmhmm.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S CAMARO. CONTINUOUS.

JAMIE
I'm fine. But thank you for everything.

LANDON
(softly)
Oh, you're welcome.

JAMIE turns to open the car door.

LANDON
Hey.

She turns back to him.

LANDON
Um. I wanna ask you somethin'.

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
Okay.

She waits patiently.

LANDON
(hopeful)
Will you go out with me on Saturday night?

JAMIE looks down.

JAMIE
Um. I'm sorry. I... can't go.

LANDON
(crestfallen)
Oh. Um. You have somethin' else goin' on or --

JAMIE shakes her head.

JAMIE
No. No. It's not that.

LANDON
Then what is it?

JAMIE sighs.

JAMIE
(sadly)
I'm not allowed to date.

He frowns.

LANDON
Oh.

CUT TO:

EXT. CHURCH. DAY.

LANDON's Camaro is parked out front.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(off screen)
Do not be decieved.

CUT TO:

INT. CHURCH. CONTINUOUS.

REVEREND SULLIVAN continues reading from a passage. He's standing at the podium.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
God is not mocked.

He clears his throat.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(quietly)
Mocked.

He underlines something with his pencil. The church door opens.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
For whatever a man sows that he will also reap.

LANDON approaches the podium cautiously.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap --

His eyes suddenly fixate on LANDON as he goes to take a sip of water.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Can I help you?

LANDON
Uh, yes, sir.
(rather shakily)
I'd like to ask your daughter to dinner on Saturday night.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(quickly)
That's not possible.

He takes a sip of water.

LANDON
Well, with all due respect sir, I ask you to reconsider.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
With all due respect, Mr. Carter, I've made my decision.

LANDON looks at him, unmoving.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
You can uh, exit the way you entered.

He returns to his passage.

LANDON waits a moment, then:

LANDON
Listen, I'm sorry I haven't treated Jamie the way I should've. She deserves more than that. I am just asking you for the same thing that you teach us every day in church.

REVEREND SULLIVAN finally looks up again.

LANDON
And that's faith.

REVEREND SULLIVAN begins tapping his pencil loudly on the podium.

CUT TO:

EXT. OUTDOOR RESTAURANT. OCEANSIDE. NIGHT.

LANDON and JAMIE walk hand in hand to a table, passing other couples and people on their way.

JAMIE
(smiling)
I can't believe you asked my father's permission.

LANDON
It was no big deal. He was cool about it anyway.

He chuckles. They reach their table. He pulls out a chair for JAMIE.

JAMIE
Thank you.

He circles over to his side. A WAITER is already there. He hands JAMIE a menu.

WAITER
This is for you.

JAMIE
Thank you very much.

LANDON takes his menu from the WAITER and mumbles:

LANDON
Thanks.

(Hee!)

WAITER
Would you like to start off with something to drink?

JAMIE scoots her chair closer to the table.

JAMIE
Sweet tea, please.

LANDON
Make that two.

(Aw.)

WAITER
Right away.

The WAITER leaves. LANDON looks up at JAMIE. She looks down. Then she looks up at the same exact moment he looks down. (Aaw!)

JAMIE
Um. This restaurant's really nice. Are you sure this is okay?

LANDON
Don't even worry about it. Okay?

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
Okay.

LANDON
Choose whatever you want.

The two both smile. She looks down at her menu.

LANDON
So. What'll it be?

CUT TO:

JAMIE is just finishing off her peanut butter pie. LANDON's barely touched his cake. The WAITER is back.

WAITER
Is everything okay?

JAMIE
Mmm. Mmhmm. Thank you very much.

The WAITER picks up her plate. LANDON stops staring at JAMIE and turns to the WAITER.

LANDON
Yeah, me too. Thanks.

The WAITER picks up his plate and leaves. LANDON exhales slowly. JAMIE focuses on the dancing couples. LANDON follows her gaze, then looks back at her worriedly, knowing what's coming.

JAMIE
Would you like to dance?

LANDON
Uh, sorry. I don't dance.

JAMIE
Me neither. I mean, not usually in front of anybody.

LANDON
Well, no. I mean, I - I don't --

He shakes his head.

LANDON
At all. I c -- as in I can't.

He smiles. (So cute.)

JAMIE
Everybody can dance. Come on, you can't be that bad.

LANDON looks at her like, "Umm..."

JAMIE
Please? For me? Come on.

LANDON caves. JAMIE smiles. The two walk on up to the dance podium, holding hands. They awkwardly take a moment to get situated. LANDON places a hand on JAMIE's waist, she latches onto his arm, and then places her other hand in his.

JAMIE
Oof.

LANDON
Sorry. I told you I was bad at this.

He inhales and exhales loudly.

JAMIE
But in all fairness, you did warn me, right?

LANDON
That's right.

She laughs.

LANDON
So, um, what's number one on your list?

JAMIE shakes her head like, 'Uh-uh, not telling.' She smiles.

LANDON
Okay, um, number one on my list is getting out of Beaufort.

JAMIE
Mmm. I don't think getting out is gonna be a problem. It's more like figuring out what you're gonna do when you get somewhere.

LANDON
What do you mean?

JAMIE
I mean, you can do anything.

They both gaze at each other.

FADE TO:

LANDON and JAMIE, still in dance pose, barely moving now. The camera pans up to the star-sprinkled night sky.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD. NIGHT.

LANDON's Camaro drives past.

JAMIE
(off screen)
Where are we going?

LANDON
(off screen)
Just hold on. You'll see.

Toploader's "Dancin' in the Moonlight" kicks up on the soundtrack.

CUT TO:

The car has stopped. LANDON goes around the front of the car to meet up with JAMIE who is emerging from the passenger side.

LANDON
Come on, come on, come on. Let's go.

He shuts her door, takes her hand, and starts running.

JAMIE
What are we doing?

LANDON
Running!

He stops.

LANDON
Okay, okay. Uh, stand there.

JAMIE
All right.

LANDON
Okay, one foot there.

He points to the left side of a chalky line on the road.

JAMIE
Okay.

LANDON
And one foot here.

JAMIE
Okay.

LANDON
There you go.

JAMIE sighs happily and shakes her head.

JAMIE
(smiling)
You're acting like a crazy person. What's going on?

LANDON
Okay, right now, you're straddling the state line.

JAMIE
Okay...?

LANDON motions to a sign behind him that says 'Welcome to Virginia'.

LANDON
You're in two places at once.

Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

They're both grinning like idiots. Too cute. JAMIE laughs and hugs him. He picks her up and spins her around. (Awww.)

Dancin' in the moonlight
Everybody's feelin' warm & bright...

FADE TO:

EXT. PARKING LOT. NIGHT.

LANDON's Camaro is parked (rather crookedly) in one of the spaces.

It's such a fine and natural sight

LANDON
(off screen)
Okay.

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S CAMARO. NIGHT. CONTINUOUS.

Toploader is playing on LANDON's radio. LANDON has three sheets of temporary tattoos. JAMIE looks over them.

LANDON
Butterfly, rosebud, or star?

JAMIE shakes her head and smiles at him.

JAMIE
You choose.

Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight

Toploader fades. Mandy Moore's "It's Gonna Be Love" begins playing. LANDON holds up his choice.

LANDON
Butterfly.

JAMIE
Mmkay.

The two laugh quietly.

LANDON
So... where do you want it?

JAMIE
Mm.

She looks around and settles on her shoulder.

JAMIE
Right here.

She pulls down her shirt slightly so that her shoulder is exposed, then pulls her hair back. LANDON watches her quietly, his eyes going back and forth from her shoulder to her eyes. She points at the spot on her shoulder where she wants LANDON to put the tattoo.

The sooner you let two hearts beat together

LANDON
Okay.

He peels the cellophane of the temporary tattoo off. JAMIE smiles.

The sooner you know this love is forever

LANDON begins applying the tattoo to JAMIE's shoulder. JAMIE observes him and his work quietly.

It's gonna be love
Love needs time
Now or never

LANDON looks up at her and smiles.

It's gonna be love
You gotta believe
It's gonna be strong enough

LANDON peels back the tattoo to reveal a tiny black butterfly now on JAMIE's shoulder. Both admire his work. The song kicks up.

It's gonna be love
It's gonna be great
It's gonna be more than I can take

LANDON and JAMIE smile at each other. LANDON leans in close to blow softly on her shoulder.

It's gonna be free
It's gonna be real
It's gonna change everything I feel
It's gonna be set
It's gonna be true

LANDON places his hand over her shoulder and slowly moves his fingers gently across her skin.

It's gonna be me, baby
It's gonna be you, baby
It's gonna be...

LANDON looks up at JAMIE again with what can only be described as thee most adorable 'Awww' look ever in the entire world. Yum.

It's gonna be love

JAMIE gazes back at him.

CUT TO:

EXT. PARKING LOT. NIGHT. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON's Camaro is parked (still rather crookedly) in one of the spaces.

CUT TO:

EXT. DOCKS. NIGHT.

LANDON and JAMIE stroll the docks silently holding hands.

JAMIE
How can you see places like this and have moments like this and not believe?

LANDON
You're lucky to be so sure.

She steps a few paces ahead of him and he drops her hand.

JAMIE
It's like the wind. I can't see it, but I feel it.

LANDON
What do you feel?

JAMIE
(smiles)
I feel wonder and beauty.

LANDON observes her contemplatively.

JAMIE
Joy. Love. I mean, it's --

She turns to face him.

JAMIE
It's the center of everything.

They pause.

LANDON
(softly)
I might kiss you.

JAMIE
(unsure)
I might be bad at it.

LANDON
That's not possible.

He leans in to kiss her softly, his hand on her cheek. When they part, JAMIE averts her eyes. LANDON looks down.

LANDON
(whispers)
Jamie?

She looks up. Gazing back at her, LANDON says gently:

LANDON
I love you.

She doesn't say anything, looking at him startled. He bites his bottom lip.

LANDON
Now would be the time to say something.

JAMIE
(softly)
I told you not to fall in love with me.

LANDON looks at her disappointed, but leans in to kiss her again anyway. They part and gaze at each other. He kisses her forehead. Switchfoot's "Learning to Breathe" begins playing on the soundtrack.

I'm learning to breathe

EXT. BEACH. SUNRISE.

I'm learning to crawl...

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL. DAY.

LANDON and JAMIE walk defiantly towards the school holding hands. Rock on. Switchfoot's still kicking on the soundtrack:

(I'm learning to breathe)
I'm finding that you & you alone can break my fall
(Learning to crawl)
I'm living again
Awake & alive
I'm dyin' to breathe in these abundant skies...

TRACIE is standing with DEAN and WALKER when she notices them. DEAN and WALKER direct their attention to LANDON and JAMIE. DEAN gives LANDON the freakin' most hilarious bitter pissed off look as the two lovebirds stroll past them. BELINDA and ERIC walk on over to the other three. BELINDA's like, "WTF is going on here?" DEAN shakes his head.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S KITCHEN. NIGHT.

REVEREND SULLIVAN stirs the tea he's just made and checks his watch. He sets the spoon in the sink and turns to the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S BACKYARD. NIGHT. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON and JAMIE stroll up to the back door, holding hands, both very happy. LANDON is talking indistinctly and JAMIE laughs quietly. LANDON smiles at her. The two stop and kiss.

Learning to breathe
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant...

Switchfoot fades as they both smile at each other. Neither notices the door opening behind them. They lean in for more smoochies when --

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie.

Their attention goes to JAMIE's father.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Say goodnight to Mr. Carter.

He hurries down the steps and over to them. LANDON looks down and backs away from JAMIE, letting go of her hand.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Landon, go home. The night's over.

LANDON
(to Jamie)
Goodnight.

JAMIE
(sweetly)
Goodnight.

LANDON
Goodnight, sir.

He leaves. JAMIE watches him go.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie, your behavior's sinful.

She finally looks at him, taken aback.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
You're -- you're acting with that boy like you were --

JAMIE
In love?

Pause. Silence. LANDON's Camaro revs up off screen.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie, you are a child.

JAMIE
Dad. Look at me. I'm not a child.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Then stop acting childish.

Another pause.

JAMIE
I love him.

REVEREND SULLIVAN looks down at her, worried.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Then be fair to him, Jamie, before things get worse.

He heads back to the house. JAMIE looks the other way, where LANDON's car once was. She follows her father into the house and shuts the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. CEMETARY. NIGHT.

JAMIE takes her telescope out of a shed and sets it down as LANDON pulls up in his Camaro. He cuts the ignition and gets out of the car, carrying a bag'o'stuff with him.

LANDON
Hey.

JAMIE
Hey.

He shuts the car door and makes his way over to her. Smiling, he greets her with a kiss on the cheek.

JAMIE
Will you help me?

LANDON
Yeah.

They begin walking towards her telescope stuff.

LANDON
So, uh, what'd you tell your father?

She picks up her telescope.

JAMIE
The truth.

LANDON picks up the telescope stand.

JAMIE
I just left you out of it.

CUT TO:

LANDON sits on a bench, rifling through his bag for something. JAMIE stands beside her telescope.

JAMIE
So, what do you wanna see?

He looks up at her.

LANDON
Um...

He raises an eyebrow.

LANDON
Pluto.

JAMIE
Um. Pluto only rises a few minutes before the sun.

LANDON's back to searching through his bag.

LANDON
Right. And

He stands up.

LANDON
I have brought us a thermos

He takes the thermos out of the bag and holds it with his free hand.

LANDON
Of hot coffee.

He sets the thermos on the ground.

LANDON
And um,

He takes something else out of the bag.

LANDON
A blanket.

JAMIE
You planned this.

LANDON spreads the blanket out on the ground.

LANDON
Oh, I hoped for it.

He sits down on the blanket.

JAMIE
Are you trying to seduce me?

LANDON
(coy)
Why? Are you seduceable?

(::giddy:: I am! Me! Pick me! Adorable bastard.) JAMIE smiles and shakes her head 'no'.

LANDON
That's what I thought. Ergo,

He reaches into the bag again.

LANDON
A second blanket. One for me and one for you.

He spreads the other blanket out. She smiles.

JAMIE
Thank you.

(Pauseworthy moment. Right after she thanks him, LANDON gives her this great, great look. *Muah* I could kiss you, Shane.) LANDON stands up and smiling, goes over to her, kissing her shoulder. He takes something out of the front pocket of his shirt and unfolds it as she looks up at the night sky. She peers into her telescope as he asks:

LANDON
Can you find this star? Right here?

He points to something on the paper he's just unfolded. She rises from the telescope.

JAMIE
Sure.

She takes the paper. He goes back to his bag and takes out something else. She scans the night sky with her eyes, then goes to look through the telescope. LANDON holds a rolled-up piece of paper in his hands.

JAMIE
So, why am I looking for this star?

LANDON
Because I had it named for you.

He smiles. JAMIE looks up at him, surprised. He waves the paper in his hands.

LANDON
See?

He grins.

LANDON
It's official.

He unrolls the paper. JAMIE continues to look at him, so in awe and 'Awww'. She goes over to him, smiling.

LANDON
It's from the International Star Registry.

He hands her the paper. (God, he's so happy.) Cuuute.

JAMIE
This is wonderful.

She looks up from the paper to meet his eyes.

JAMIE
(softly)
I love you.

The two take a moment before leaning in to kiss. LANDON breaks away after a moment, saying:

LANDON
(softly)
Okay, okay, okay. I'm sorry.

He opens his eyes to look at her.

LANDON
I'm stopping.

They both go to sit down. JAMIE nestles comfortably into his arms. He wraps an arm around her waist, placing his hand over hers.

LANDON
So. What's your number one?

He waits patiently, raising his eyebrows at her curiously.

JAMIE
To marry in the church where my mother grew up. It's where my parents were married.

He smiles, closes his eyes, and kisses her cheek. Her eyes also closed, she leans her head against his. Then she opens her eyes, and smiles, all in bliss.

FADE TO:

EXT. THE MOON. NIGHT.

FADE TO:

EXT. CEMETARY. SUNRISE.

FADE TO:

EXT. DOCKS. SUNRISE.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S HOUSE. MORNING.

It's quite the cloudy, windy morning. LANDON sets his bag'o'stuff he brought to the cemetary down on a chair on the porch and approaches his mom who is working on something. He grabs her suddenly.

LANDON
Hey!

She gasps. He kisses her cheek.

MRS. CARTER
(still recovering)
Oh.
(slight beat)
Did you just get in?

LANDON
Yeah.

He goes to sit down.

MRS. CARTER
Well, thank heavens I didn't know. I would've been panicked.

LANDON chuckles.

LANDON
Sorry.

MRS. CARTER
Landon? Were you with Jamie?

He doesn't even have to say. She can tell just by looking at him.

MRS. CARTER
Landon, be careful. She's the Reverend's daughter. Please.

LANDON
Mom. It's different with her, okay?

MRS. CARTER
(skeptical)
It's different with her?

LANDON
(nods)
Yes.

MRS. CARTER
It better be different with her.

LANDON shakes his head and smiles.

MRS. CARTER
I was doing laundry the other day...

She reaches into a portfolio and takes out a folded-up piece of notebook paper.

MRS. CARTER
...and I found this.

She unfolds it. LANDON leans back in his seat and places a hand on his forehead.

MRS. CARTER
(reading)
'Examine a moon rock. Go to college. Get into medical school.'

LANDON looks up at her, somewhat upset.

MRS. CARTER
Honey, these are really beautiful ambitions. They're -- but you're gonna have to work really hard.

LANDON
I can do that.

MRS. CARTER
Yeah. You can.

LANDON smiles slightly.

LANDON
Momma, Jamie has faith in me, you know? She makes me wanna be different. Better.

Part Three
CUT TO:

EXT. SIDEWALKS. NIGHT.

LANDON and JAMIE stroll hand in hand as 311's "All Mixed Up" blares on the soundtrack. They aren't in the lovey-doviest of moods. JAMIE stares ahead blankly. LANDON's eyes are wandering. BELINDA and TRACIE emerge from one of the shops they pass. They're both giggling.

BELINDA
I was so drunk. I don't remember anything.

All four stop and glance at each other. Then TRACIE and BELINDA go on their way and LANDON and JAMIE resume walking. (If you pause, JAMIE kinda gives BELINDA this morose stare and LANDON is looking at DEAN who is still inside the shop.)

LANDON
That's great. From Citizen High to Citizen Low.

LANDON finally turns his attention to JAMIE. He gives her a look like, "Okay... what's up with my girlfriend tonight?" JAMIE keeps her eyes ahead, still emotionless, and doesn't say anything.

LANDON
Are you worried about your college applications?

JAMIE shakes her head.

JAMIE
No.

They head into the alley. They're no longer holding hands.

JAMIE
I'm not applying to college.

LANDON
I thought you said...

JAMIE
No. You assumed.

LANDON
Gonna take a year off? Try the peace corp thing?

JAMIE
(softly)
No.

LANDON
Okay.

They stop. JAMIE turns to face him.

LANDON
What are you gonna do?

She doesn't answer right away. He looks at her worried.

JAMIE
I'm sick.

LANDON
I'll take you home. You'll be better tomorrow --

JAMIE
(shaking her head)
No, no.

She sighs.

JAMIE
Landon.

She pauses slightly.

JAMIE
I'm sick.

He doesn't know what she means by that. He looks at her helplessly.

JAMIE
I have leukemia.

He smiles and kinda laughs thinking what she's just told him can't possibly be true. Then, serious:

LANDON
No. You're -- you're 18. You're perfect.

JAMIE
No. No. I found out two years ago. I've stopped responding to treatments.

She shrugs and looks at him sadly. LANDON bites his bottom lip.

LANDON
So why didn't you tell me?

JAMIE
The doctor said I should go on and live life normally as -- as best I could. I -- I didn't want anybody to be wierd around me.

LANDON
Including me?

JAMIE's eyes well up with tears.

JAMIE
Especially you!

LANDON doesn't say anything.

JAMIE
You know, I -- I was getting along with everything fine. I accepted it. And then you happened.

She stares down and sucks in a deep breath. She looks at him again.

JAMIE
I do not need a reason to be angry with God.

LANDON stares at her heavy-hearted still not saying a word. She turns and runs away from him. Switchfoot's "Dare You To Move" kicks up on the soundtrack. LANDON inhales sharply, trying not to cry watching her leave him.

Welcome to the planet...

FADE TO:

EXT. BEAUFORT. NIGHT.

Welcome to existence...

FADE TO:

EXT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT.

LANDON drives along the highway in his Camaro.

Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now

CUT TO:

EXT. MR. CARTER'S HOUSE. NIGHT.

Everybody waits for you now

LANDON screeches his car to a stop in front of his dad's house.

What happens next?

LANDON exits the car.

What happens next?

He circles around the back of the car.

I dare you to move
I dare you to move

LANDON hurries up the lawn to his father's front door all upset.

I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor

He rings the doorbell.

I dare you to move

He knocks loudly after a second of waiting and stands back.

I dare you to move

He knocks again.

LANDON
Dad, open the door!

Like today never happened

LANDON gives up and turns around. The porch light goes on as he retreats, wondering what he's going to do now.

Today never happened before

MR. CARTER steps onto the porch and LANDON spins around to face him. Switchfoot fades.

MR. CARTER
Landon?

LANDON sighs.

LANDON
I need your help.

MR. CARTER
(concerned)
What's wrong? Are you okay?

LANDON
It's my girlfriend. Jamie. She's --

He pauses.

LANDON
She's got cancer, okay? And I need you to come and see her right now.

MR. CARTER
Okay, will you calm down?

LANDON
Can you help me or not?

MR. CARTER
I don't -- I don't know her case. I don't know her history. I'd have to talk to her physician. I'm a cardiologist, I can't --

LANDON
You know, just forget it. I knew it.

He turns around again to go.

MR. CARTER
Would you wait? Landon, wait!

A blonde appears on the porch in her nightgown. LANDON's car door slams shut. The Camaro revs up and screeches off. MR. CARTER sighs. Switchfoot's "You" strikes up on the soundtrack.

CUT TO:

EXT. HIGHWAY. NIGHT. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON is making the long trek back home, driving along unhappily.

There's always something in the way
There's always something getting through
But it's not me... it's you
It's you
It's all that I know
It's all that I know
I find peace when I'm confused
And I find hope when I'm let down

He stares at the empty road ahead on the verge of tears.

Not in me... me in you
It's in you
It's all that I know
It's all that I know

FADE TO:

EXT. LANDON'S HOUSE. SUNSET.

In you

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S BACKYARD. SUNSET. CONTINUOUS.

LANDON stands alone, staring at nothing in particular. He's pensive, standing beside the water.

It's all that I know
It's you...

Switchfoot fades as ERIC approaches.

ERIC
Hey.

He steps up beside LANDON.

ERIC
Your mom called me. Talk to me, man.

LANDON
About what?

ERIC
About you. About Jamie.

LANDON
What's there to talk about? She's the best person I've ever known.

He turns to look at ERIC sadly, then faces forward again.

ERIC
I didn't understand.

LANDON glances at him for a moment, then replies:

LANDON
It's okay, man. It's okay.

They do their handshake like before -- only now in a gentler way. LANDON rests a hand on ERIC's shoulder and turns away, hanging his head.

CUT TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE. DAY.

LANDON strolls up to JAMIE's front porch. The porch is covered with bouquets of flowers. (Awww.) LANDON sets two more bouquets down. As he retreats, he sees REVEREND SULLIVAN coming up the sidewalk with some RANDOM LADY.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
It's so nice to see you again. You're welcome. Watch yourself.

The random woman goes. REVEREND SULLIVAN turns to LANDON. He eyes the porch display.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Landon.

LANDON
I'm not going anywhere. Please tell Jamie that.

He leaves. REVEREND SULLIVAN considers LANDON's words.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S GARAGE. DAY.

LANDON fixes something in the hood of his Camaro and pulls down the hood to find JAMIE standing there. He stares at her, grim. The two approach each other slowly, awkwardly.

JAMIE
I'm -- I'm so sorry. I really should've told you sooner.

LANDON
No, I made you do too many things. I kept you out --

JAMIE
No, no, no. If anything, you kept me healthy longer.

She looks at him sadly. LANDON looks down for a second, then up at her, trying to work up the nerve to finally ask:

LANDON
(softly)
Are you scared?

Aw. His lower lip trembles. :(

JAMIE
To death.

LANDON averts his eyes. He can't believe that she'd be joking about something like this. JAMIE takes a step forward, smiling weakly.

JAMIE
Lighten up.

LANDON looks at her miserably.

LANDON
It's not funny.

The two stare at each other. JAMIE shuts her eyes and places her forehead against his. She tugs gently at his necklace. Both stay that way for a moment -- foreheads touching, eyes closed. She finally breaks away to look up at him. Still holding onto his necklace, she replies:

JAMIE
I'm scared of not being with you.

Tears fill her eyes. LANDON's gaze falls on hers compassionately.

LANDON
Oh, baby, that'll never happen, okay?

He cups her face. She nods. He hugs her tightly. As the two embrace, LANDON promises:

LANDON
I'll be here.

Saddest. Scene. Ever. Jonathan Foreman's version of "Someday We'll Know" begins.

90 miles outside Chicago...

CUT TO:

INT. LANDON'S LIVING ROOM. SAME DAY -- LATER.

MRS. CARTER is sitting on the couch reading. LANDON approaches her.

LANDON
Mom?

MRS. CARTER looks up.

MRS. CARTER
Hm?

LANDON
Um... can you do me a favor?

CUT TO:

MRS. CARTER is teaching LANDON how to dance. He falters occasionally, stepping on her foot and stuff. Jonathan Foreman is still singing:

Can't stop drivin' I don't know why
Too many questions I need an answer
Two years later you're still on my mind
Whatever happened to Amelia Earhart?
Who holds the stars up in the sky?
Is true love just once in a lifetime?
Did the captain of the Titanic cry?...

LANDON spins his mother and the scene FADES TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S BALCONY. NIGHT.

LANDON is spinning JAMIE now. The two dance together. It's the sweetest thing in the world. So much love. The song continues:

Oh, someday we'll know
If love can move a mountain
Someday we'll know
Why the sky is blue
Someday we'll know
That I was the one for you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Someday we'll know why Samson loved Delilah
One day I'll go dancin' on the moon...

The camera pans up to the trees.

FADE TO:

EXT. DOCKS. AFTERNOON.

The sun is setting. JAMIE is asleep, resting on LANDON's shoulder. They're sitting on a bench by the water. JAMIE's sweater is hanging slightly off her shoulder. LANDON gently strokes her arm and notices the sweater. He places it back and kisses her forehead. (Awww.)

Someday you'll know that I was the one for you...

FADE TO:

EXT. CEMETARY. DAY.

The song fades. LANDON is getting JAMIE's telescope to put in his Camaro's trunk. DEAN pulls into the cemetary in his truck. LANDON looks up as DEAN cuts the ignition and gets out of his auto. He stands up and narrows his eyes, crossing his arms across his chest. DEAN approaches him timidly. He's still a good distance away. LANDON unfolds his arms and places them on his hips.

DEAN
So, um... I talked to Eric.

LANDON nods. Awkward pause.

DEAN
Need some help with this stuff?

LANDON
Sure.

He grabs the telescope stand and hands it to DEAN. He picks up JAMIE'S telescope.

FADE TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE. DAY.

LANDON measures JAMIE's telescope and marks something down on a clipboard.

FADE TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S HOUSE. DAY.

LANDON hauls a large cardboard-y telescope looking thing to JAMIE's house.

FADE TO:

INT. JAMIE'S BEDROOM. DAY.

JAMIE sleeps peacefully. How cute, there's a giant stuffed animal panda bear in the background. In real life, Mrs. Moore's nickname for Mandy is "Panda Bear" -- coincidence or a purposefully well thought out plan by the prop guys? Anyway, JAMIE's Bible sits on her nightstand next to her bed. She also has a pink phone. Wow, even JAMIE likes talking on the phone. Well, with a boyfriend as adorable as LANDON, who wouldn't? ;) Speaking of LANDON, he's outside electric sawing. JAMIE opens her eyes and sits up. She looks very tired. LANDON's outside hammering loudly now. Did LANDON even know she was sleeping? He's disturbing her quiet time. Mean boy. :p JAMIE goes over to her window and pulls back the curtain. LANDON's down below making measurements and writing down stuff. Telescope stuff surrounds him. REVEREND SULLIVAN enters JAMIE's room.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie, what's that boy doin' in the yard?

JAMIE turns to her father, suddenly looking very, very sick.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(worried)
Jamie, what's the matter?

JAMIE doesn't answer him. She faints, collapsing into REVEREND SULLIVAN's arms.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
(panicked)
Jamie, honey?!

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD. DAY.

An ambulance speeds along, siren wailing.

CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL. NIGHT.

LANDON sits by JAMIE's side, sad, holding her hand. She's fast asleep. He glances at REVEREND SULLIVAN in the hallway, talking to a doctor. A nurse enters the room, marks something down on her clipboard, picks up a pitcher on a table next to JAMIE's bed, and leaves. LANDON watches JAMIE resting peacefully, tubes tied up to her. He glances at the beeping monitor, then sighs softly.

FADE TO BLACK. FADE TO:

LANDON and JAMIE are both asleep now. LANDON still holds on to her hand. JAMIE moves slightly. LANDON stirs and settles down to observe her quietly.

FADE TO BLACK. FADE TO:

LANDON sleeps beside JAMIE now, on her bed, his arm over her, subtly stroking her arm. He opens his eyes to look up at her. (Aaw.)

FADE TO BLACK. FADE TO:

INT. HOSPITAL. MORNING.

REVEREND SULLIVAN peers into his daughter's hospital room to find LANDON sitting by JAMIE's side. LANDON settles back into his chair, his eyes closing. REVEREND SULLIVAN enters the room. LANDON struggles to stay awake, but his eyes keep closing on him. REVEREND SULLIVAN rests a hand on LANDON's shoulder.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Landon.

He takes his hand away.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Go on home, son.

LANDON
I'm not tired.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
I need just a minute with her.

LANDON takes a moment before he leans forward to kiss JAMIE's hand. She awakes and turns to him. Taking her hand, he tells her:

LANDON
(gently)
I'll be back, okay?

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
Okay.

LANDON gets up and goes. JAMIE shuts her eyes. REVEREND SULLIVAN settles into the chair LANDON was in. He rubs his forehead. JAMIE looks over at him and frowns.

JAMIE
(softly)
Daddy... so serious.

REVEREND SULLIVAN shakes his head 'no' and takes her hand. He chuckles.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Do you remember when you were about um, five or six, and you said you hated gravity and you wanted to jump off the roof and fly?

JAMIE smiles and laughs.

JAMIE
I was so angry at you for making me come down.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Honey, if I kept you too close, it's because I wanted to keep you longer.

JAMIE frowns again.

JAMIE
Dad.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
You know, when I lost your mother... I was afraid that my heart would never open again.

He pauses.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Jamie, I couldn't look at you for days... But then...

JAMIE
I love you so much.

REVEREND SULLIVAN bows his head down, crying quietly. She places a hand on his head and he places his hand over hers.

CUT TO:

EXT. LANDON'S HOUSE. (CLOUDY) DAY.

LANDON sits in a chair on his porch lost in thought. BELINDA approaches. He springs up from his seat.

BELINDA
Hi.

LANDON
Hey.

She hands him a packet of pictures.

BELINDA
I wanted to give you these.

LANDON takes them.

BELINDA
They're pictures from the play.

They both pause.

BELINDA
(apologetic)
I'm sorry about the fliers.

LANDON
Hey, it doesn't matter.

BELINDA
(quietly)
Yeah.
(sadly)
I guess you're with who you should be.

LANDON looks confused.

BELINDA
It's like she chose you.

LANDON
Yeah.

He smiles.

LANDON
I don't even know why.

BELINDA, near tears, replies:

BELINDA
I do.

She smiles weakly.

BELINDA
Well --

She grabs his shoulders and kisses his cheek then hurriedly walks off. LANDON waits a moment before he opens the packet. Then he turns and walks the other way.

CUT TO:

INT. JAMIE'S HOSPITAL ROOM. DAY.

JAMIE opens her eyes slowly and spots LANDON sitting by the window. He's drumming his fingers against his forehead and reading a magazine. Balloons and flowers decorate the room. JAMIE smiles and sighs contentedly. LANDON looks up. He smiles back.

LANDON
Hey.

He shuts the magazine and walks over to her.

LANDON
How you feelin'?

He leans down to kiss her cheek.

JAMIE
I'm okay. How are you?

LANDON sits down on her bed, careful not to sit on her.

LANDON
Pretty good.

JAMIE
I have something for you.

LANDON
You do?

JAMIE nods.

JAMIE
Mmhmm.

She reaches behind her to grab a book. She hands it to him. He looks over it dubiously.

JAMIE
(smiling)
Don't worry. It's not a Bible. It was my mother's. It's got quotes from our favorite books, quotes by famous people. Her thoughts.

LANDON leans forward to kiss her fingers. They're holding hands. (Aaaw.)

JAMIE
(softly)
C'mon.

LANDON smiles.

LANDON
Okay. Let's check it out.

He flips to a page.

LANDON
(gently)
Okay.
(reading)
'What is a friend? It's a single soul dwelling in two bodies.' Aristotle.

JAMIE
Mmm. Mm mm.

She points to another passage in the book.

LANDON
(gently)
Okay.
(reading)
'Find out who you are and do it on purpose.'

JAMIE looks up at him thoughtfully.

LANDON
That's Dolly Parton.

JAMIE
(smiling)
I always thought she was smart.

LANDON smiles and turns the pages.

LANDON
(reading)
'Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous.'

JAMIE shuts her eyes.

LANDON
(reading)
'Love is never boastful or conceited.'

JAMIE begins reciting with him:

BOTH
'It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and it is not resentful.'

LANDON sighs. JAMIE opens her eyes. He shuts the book.

JAMIE
You know what I figured out today?

LANDON
What?

JAMIE
Maybe God has a bigger plan for me then I had for myself. Like, this journey never ends. Like, you were sent to me because I'm sick... to help me through all this.

LANDON begins running his fingers over her cheek. She shuts her eyes and responds to his gentle caress. Then she looks up at him.

JAMIE
You're my angel.

(So sweet.) She smiles. He stares down at her lovingly, about to cry. The two kiss. When they part, they gaze affectionally at each other.

FADE TO:

EXT. HOSPITAL PARKING LOT. DAY.

LANDON's Camaro pulls into one of the empty spaces of the parking lot.

CUT TO:

INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

JAMIE's in a wheelchair. She's being wheeled out of her room by a MALE NURSE (Mr. Adam Shankman, ;)) when LANDON approaches.

LANDON
Hey. What's goin' on?

JAMIE
Landon, I get to go home. Please thank your father for me.

REVEREND SULLIVAN is exiting her hospital room as the MALE NURSE wheels JAMIE away. LANDON turns to him.

LANDON
What does she mean?

REVEREND SULLIVAN Your father's been trying to reach you. He's gonna pay for private home care.

REVEREND SULLIVAN walks off. LANDON stands for a moment deep in thought.

CUT TO:

EXT. MR. CARTER'S HOUSE. NIGHT.

LANDON knocks gently on his dad's door. He circles the porch, his hands in his jean pockets. The door opens. MR. CARTER looks at him sadly. LANDON exhales a shaky breath, his eyes already starting to tear up.

LANDON
Thank you.

MR. CARTER nods and puts his hand on LANDON's shoulder firmly. LANDON pulls him closer and embraces him beginning to sob. (Awww.)

LANDON
Sorry.

MR. CARTER
(quietly)
That's all right, Landon.

FADE TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S BACKYARD. NIGHT.

LANDON is hard at work with the telescope he's building for JAMIE. REVEREND SULLIVAN gazes at him from the window. Shortly after, he exits the house and approaches LANDON with a mug in one hand and a lantern in the other.

LANDON
(firm)
Listen. I gotta finish this tonight.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Here. Something hot.

He sets the mug down on the table LANDON's working on. LANDON looks up.

LANDON
Okay. Well, I'm almost finished with the rocker. Did she order the mirrors?

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Yeah.

He points to something.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
They're in here.

LANDON
Great.

The two head for the garage.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
What are you gonna use for the side bearings?

LANDON
I'm using an old phonographic turntable.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
So you think you can get all this done by tomorrow, Landon?

FADE TO:

EXT. STAR-SPRINKLED NIGHT SKY.

FADE TO:

EXT. JAMIE'S BALCONY. NIGHT.

LANDON and JAMIE stand holding each other.

JAMIE
Thank you.

LANDON
You're welcome.

She glances behind her to admire the telescope LANDON has built for her.

JAMIE
It's beautiful.

LANDON
Okay, it's time. Go check it out.

She turns back to him.

JAMIE
(softly)
Okay.

LANDON
Okay.

They part. He places his hands in his coat pockets. The medley of Switchfoot's "Only Hope" begins playing on the soundtrack. JAMIE looks through the telescope. LANDON watches her silently. She breaks away to look at the night sky. He follows her gaze. After a moment, LANDON's eyes fall back to JAMIE. He tilts his head. She adjusts the telescope knob as she looks through it once more. A comet shoots across the sky.

JAMIE
(whispering)
Wow.

She smiles.

JAMIE
There it is.

LANDON smiles.

JAMIE
Come here. Come... look.

He walks over to her.

JAMIE
Come here. Come look. Quick.

He gently moves her aside and still holding onto her hand peers into the telescope. She looks up at the night sky again.

LANDON
Wow. That is cool.

He grins.

JAMIE
Mmhmm.

She's now sitting in a chair. He kneels beside her.

LANDON
Do you love me?

(::shivers:: Yes. ::pause:: Oh, he's not asking me, is he?) Her eyes fall on him.

JAMIE
Mmm.

He smiles and takes her hand.

LANDON
Will you do something for me then?

JAMIE
(smiling)
Anything.

LANDON
Will you marry me?

JAMIE nods, smiles. She's nearly crying. LANDON returns the grin. They kiss. He runs a hand through her hair.

& I lift my hands and pray to be only yours...

FADE TO:

EXT. CHURCH. DAY.

I know now you're my only...

CUT TO:

INT. CHURCH. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

The church doors open and JAMIE, linked arm-in-arm with REVEREND SULLIVAN, enter. Everyone turns in their seats to watch the two.

...hope

LANDON takes a moment before he looks up at JAMIE, momentarily stunned, then settling into a smile, pleased. JAMIE and her father slowly make their way down the aisle. JAMIE observes the crowd as she passes them by.

I give you my empathy
I'm giving you all of me
I want your symphony
Singing in all that I am

She finally looks at LANDON and smiles.

At the top of my lungs
I'm givin' it back
& I lay my head back down

MR. CARTER watches JAMIE as she approaches the front of the church.

& I lift my hands and pray

JAMIE passes by ERIC, DEAN, and MRS. CARTER. The two ladies take a moment to smile at each other.

To be only yours
I know now you're my only hope

JAMIE and her father reach LANDON at last. JAMIE hands her bouquet to someone and faces LANDON, smiling. He returns the smile. The two bring their hands together. REVEREND SULLIVAN begins reading:

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous.

LANDON
(whispering; to Jamie)
I love you.

JAMIE
(whispering; to Landon)
I love you.

(Aaw. ::cries:: Damn you two and your cuteness!)

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Love is never boastful nor conceited.

LANDON smiles and kinda happily sighs at JAMIE. (Awww.)

REVEREND SULLIVAN
It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and it is not resentful.

FADE TO:

The crowd. DEAN and MRS. CARTER both observe the ceremony in silence, pleased.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins, but delights in the truth.

The camera pans over more of the guests. JAMIE's student from the sister school, SALLY.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
It is always ready to excuse. To trust. To hope. And to endure whatever comes.

(As LANDON and JAMIE say their vows, the scene fades between the two of them. Sometimes their words overlap each other.)

LANDON
I, Landon Rollins Carter,

JAMIE
I, Jamie Elizabeth Sullivan, do solemnly swear,

LANDON
Do solemnly swear to take Jamie Elizabeth Sullivan,

JAMIE
To take Landon Rollins Carter,

LANDON
As my lawfully wedded wife,

JAMIE
As my lawfully wedded husband,

LANDON
To honor and to cherish her,

JAMIE
All...

LANDON
All the days of my life.

JAMIE
...of my life.

The two gaze at each other sadly. (::sobs:: God, this is depressing.)

FADE TO:

LANDON gently places a ring on JAMIE's finger.

FADE TO:

JAMIE places a ring on LANDON's finger.

FADE TO:

The two smile at each other as the camera pans down the aisle and outside.

LANDON
(voice-over)
Jamie and I had a perfect summer together with more love than lots of people know in a lifetime.

The camera pans up to the trees.

LANDON
(voice-over)
And then she went... with her unfailing faith.

Sigh.

FADE TO:

EXT. BEAUFORT. SEASIDE. DAY.

FADE TO:

EXT. ROAD. DAY. CONTINUOUS.

An Explorer drives past a sign that says 'Beaufort'. The driver is, of course, LANDON, who stops the car across the street from JAMIE's house. He exits the car, a bag slung over his shoulder. He's quite stylish -- sportin' some shades and he's gone very preppy. He makes his way over to the house.

LANDON
(voice-over)
It's been four years, but the vision of Jamie walking towards me...

LANDON is on the porch now. He rings the doorbell.

LANDON
(voice-over)
...will stay with me forever.

He removes the sunglasses. A middle-aged woman answers the door. Apparently she's the HOUSEKEEPER -- so says the credits anyway.

HOUSEKEEPER
Hello, Mr. Carter. Come in.

LANDON
Thank you.

He steps inside and into the living room.

HOUSEKEEPER
Have a seat, please.

LANDON
Thank you.

He sets his bag down on the couch, then sits down himself as she leaves the room. He sighs. REVEREND SULLIVAN enters the living room. To his right, on the mantel, is a wedding picture of LANDON and JAMIE. ::sniff::

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Landon.

He chuckles.

LANDON
Hey.

LANDON rises from the couch.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
You look good.

The two embrace.

LANDON
Aw, thank you. You too.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
I'm gettin' by.

LANDON laughs. They both sit down. LANDON returns to his seat on the couch while REVEREND SULLIVAN sits in a chair across from him. He removes his glasses.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
What's new, Landon?

LANDON
Well, I got into medical school.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Your mother told me that. We're so proud of you. Jamie would've been proud of you, too.

LANDON's face falls.

LANDON
Listen.

He reaches into his bag and pulls out the book JAMIE gave him in the hospital -- her mother's book of quotes.

LANDON
I want you to have this.

He hands REVEREND SULLIVAN the book.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Oh, Landon.

He takes the book.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
Oh my. Thank you.

LANDON
I'm sorry she never got her miracle.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
She did.

He pauses.

REVEREND SULLIVAN
It was you.

LANDON exhales slowly.

FADE TO:

EXT. DOCKS. SUNSET.

LANDON strolls the docks silently.

LANDON
(voice over)
Jamie saved my life. She taught me everything about life, hope, and the long journey ahead.

Mandy Moore's "Cry" begins playing on the soundtrack.

LANDON
(voice over)
And I'll always miss her.

LANDON stops and takes in the gorgeous view.

LANDON
(voice over)
But her love is like the wind.

He shuts his eyes.

LANDON
(voice over)
I can't see it.

His eyes reopen.

LANDON
(voice over)
But I can feel it.

LANDON reflects, smiles.

I'll always remember
It was late afternoon
It lasted forever
And ended so soon...

The End.
