Did anyone else get really sentimental over Dobby's death.... I think I only cried more at Sirius' death in Order of the Phoenix. It was so well written imo.

I was at work when I read that part, so I didn't cry so much as get teary eyed, but if I had been alone then I probably would have. I did start to cry when it looked like Hagrid had died.

Overall this book is astounding - but the epilogue is pretty disappointing, in my opinion. I mean, it didn't answer much, did it? The lives of many characters were never tied up...to me it felt like JKR ran out of steam and just slapped on an ending.

I still can't quite believe it's over...

I agree with you..there was SOOO MUCH more i was hoping to hear about in the epilogue....ill hope she ties up some things she never mentioned in the book in an interview or sumthing...because even though she didnt write them down, im sure she has an idea of what happend to the rest of the characters in her head...

i cant believe its over either :(

I read yesterday that in a few years she might write an encyclopedia that discusses past present and future of all the characters. Here's the article.

Additionally, Jo announced that she "probably will" create a Harry Potter encyclopedia! From NBC's website:

"The encyclopedia would include back stories of characters she has already written but had to cut for the sake of narrative arc (“I've said before that Dean Thomas had a much more interesting history than ever appeared in the books”), as well as details about the characters who survive “Deathly Hallows,” characters who continue to live on in Rowling’s mind in a clearly defined magical world."

Sorry for my recent hiatus. I haven't been on the boards lately but i'll make up for that. Anyway, I wrote a small review for this book on another forum so I'll just paste what I wrote. I assume we're allowed to spoil now, right?

Quote

I just finished the book and I've got to say that I thought it was quite worse than a lot of the books in the series. I felt that it lacked a little more planning than the others and it seemed there were more happenings that were "God-like" that could not be thwarted, which more or less shaped the ending of the book. Well, as JK says, we cannot explain what happens all the time in the wizarding world or whatever.
I was a little suprised to see no mention of the Mysterious Corridor when they were in the Ministery of Magic because I thought that was a major occuring theme taken from the Order of the Phoenix. Simply said, the visions that Harry had of Voldamort, I thought would be of him in the corridor doing something.

I thought that the Battle of Hogwarts was pretty unrealistic. I'm sure Students would have been no match for experienced DeathEaters. Granted, not all of them were but it seems difficult to imagine - if i'm not mistaken, Harry didn't teach all that in the D.A. On second thoughts could it have been "Mad Eye" who taught the DATDA class the Killing curse, when he was using it on the spiders? I have forgotten what really happened.
About Lilly's eyes: JK said it was really important that Harry had her eyes. I don't think it was that important. What I thought was strange was that Petunia had a chance to go to Hogwarts - and I was so sure she was a squib.

Hmm...Snapes love for Lilly? Old news, I had thought that ever since the first book because of his unexplained anger at Harry [the son of James who he envied from the start and who got Lilly in the end]. My thoughts were reinforced ever since we saw Snape's memory of him calling Lilly a Mudblood. I had always know his true allegiance to be with Bumblebee.
Now, Bumblebee's selfish ways I didn't see. That came as a shock, I admit that and I refused to believe Rita's journal on the Life and Lies of Bumblebee, even though at the end they turned out to be only half-truths.

Overall, I think this Harry Potter book is an enjoyable read. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and everything but I just thought it was no where nearly as good as the previous 5 and in my opinion, was on par with the Philosopher's Stone. I would assume that JK really didn't know how to end the Half Blood Prince and about the Horcruxes. Even though she knew what the ending would eventually be [the ending of the whole series], I thought she was a little careless at writing the end of the Half Blood Prince. In short, she didn't know how to start the Deathly Hallows and the whole journey without Hogwarts. I would assume, this book was the worse planned book in the series and I think she might feel the same way - the story was haphazard. She's probably full of regrets. I'm sure i'm not the only one to say that the chapter, "Nineteen Years Later", was much Stilton and other cheese products. I give this book 4/5.

I will definitely miss not reading about Harry Potter anymore but JK says, never say never. I would like to thank the stupid, major-league ass who spoilt the book for me on the forums with a misleading title. Because of that I knew 2 of the most important spoilers - the one on Fred and the one about Snape [I would assume it's okay to say spoilers now since it's been almost a week and I know no one would click this thread if they haven't and wanted to read the book]. I had been sure Draco would have been the one to die and I knew from interviews with JK that Harry would not die and that Bumblebee was indeed dead.

I really didn't care much for the book. :/ There were some parts that I really enjoyed and were pretty suspenseful, but in the end I thought it was a mediocre finish to a really epic story. I dunno, I was just left wanting more when I finished the book.

Warning - Spoilers!

Like, through most of the book Harry and the others don't even know what's going on, like - the whole tent scenario of the characters moving from place to place that lasted forever was pointless.

And the fact that EVERY SINGLE TIME they got close to achieving something and doing something right something bad happened, or someone messed up and Death Eaters were right around the corner to catch them. Like, I don't know how many times I read a scenario and then J.K. Rowling attempted to pull a twist and was like, "OH NO! HARRY USED VOLDEMORTS NAME AND THEY GOT CAUGHT BY SNATCHERS! OHHH." Like, it was entertaining some of the time but after awhile it became pretty comical.

And I was really really disapointed with Voldemort. The entire god damn book he was just running around looking for the Elder Wand and finally just realized his Horcruxes were destroyed really late in the game. In some parts of the book he was portrayed in a way that didn't really cast him as this omnipresent dark force - especially at the end during during the Battle for Hogwarts. And his character suffered from it. Voldemort's one of the best villains in mordern pop culture to surface for quite some time and at the end of the book I was disatisfied as to how Rowling used him.

The final confrontation with him and Harry was incredibly anti-climatic. She built up the final confrontation with him and Harry so much throughout all the books, and she did a really good job of keeping the Battle of Hogwarts scenario really suspenseful, but as it all came to a close with Bellatrix and Voldemort dueling everyone in Hogwarts I was just like, "What the hell." Bellatrix, who's an amazing villain in her own right, and who caused almost just as much strife in the lives of the characters as Voldemort himself recieved an end that really didn't do her justice. At all.

And the whole speech that Harry spouted to Voldemort before they cast their final spells at one another, which basically is the ENTIRE final confronation was really disapointing.

The ending was really rushed to, I dunno, it should've been fleshed out a lot better. All this stuff is happening and then we receive this really anti-climatic end and than it ends shortly afterwards.

And I really didn't like the 19 years later Epilogue.  :?
