in context, what does it mean? Did Steinbeck write a book about an old man whistling? Or is it a completly random side note?

All I know about Steinbeck is he wrote a book called "Of Mice and Men".
It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.

Yes, I'm sure we've all foolishly mistaken a lyric in one of Vanessa's songs before actually looking it up and feeling really stupid afterwards. Here are some of mine:

White Houses:
Quote
Little bungalow with some strange new friends

Pretty Baby:
Quote
Can you hold me and never let go / When you touch me is it me that you want

She Floats:
Quote
God knows secrets though I'm told

I'm sure there are a lot more; I suck at listening to lyrics. :P What about the rest of you guys?

I'm confused about the statement, but assuming you mean these are the misheard versions of yours, I reply
For White Houses, you are correct on that lyric.
For Pretty Baby, I believe it is "Why can't you hold me and never let go / When you touch me is it me that you own"... Not sure on that one.
For She Floats, I always thought it was "God knows secrets though I'm told" as well, but I checked the lyrics (I own the CD) and it says "Got no secrets though I'm told"[/b]
That's what she said.

I always thought the line in Who's to Say was "Do your trick, turn on the stars of Jupiter" and that always struck me as wtf.
Wait, I don't get that line either. Is it "Do your trick / Turn on the stars / Jupiter shines so bright / When you're around"? Because for some reason it never clicked that way in my mind. I guess it's because the word Jupiter is so separated from the rest of the words.

White Houses

"This little bunk alone with some strange new friends."

Annie

"A day out from the county, I see you."

^^I guess I heard it right, but I didn't comprehend it.

Half a Week Before Winter

"I'm a child of the pleasure, Daddy brings before he runs."

^^I seriously thought this whole song was about her dad because of this lyric haha. When she says, "He sits behind a desk of mahogany," I was imaging her father sitting behind a desk.

That's all I can think of for right now.
Well, this isn't a Vanessa song, but I think it's hilarious.

Fallout Boy's song Sugar We're Going Down

Instead of, "Drop a heart, break a name," my friend was CONVINCED it said, "Trabajar, break a nail."

HAHAHAHA. Because trabajar means work in spanish... and she thought people break nails when they work. It just made complete sense to her.

haha, I totally thought that, too. Right up until I actually looked at the lyric booklet last year.

If you mean 'not comprehending' as not understanding in the proper way, as in Vanessa actually meant "I.C.U" like 'Intensive Care Unit', then yes, that's what it is. "I.C.U."
That's what she said.

Haha, yea I know now that it's I.C.U.
That's what I meant by not comprehending. For a long time, I just thought she said, "I see you," not I.C.U.
