Would you be upset if Vanessa changed her image & sound?
« on: January 11, 2011, 03:13:20 am »
Not to an extreme extent, but say she made her music more relatable to the masses (lyrically, musically) and she changed her image drastically (cut her hair, dyed it, less clothes, more make up, etc). Would you be upset? Would you understand why she did it?

Not that she ever would do it, but I was just thinking about Avril Lavigne.

That's an interesting thought. I wouldn't mind it if she experimented with her sound. I don't know about changing her image, though. I think there's a difference between naturally maturing and drastically altering your persona in order to appeal to the masses. I wouldn't be too happy seeing Vanessa sell herself in order to sell records, because frankly, that's not something I'd expect from her, and it wouldn't make her the Vanessa we know and love. As I mentioned before, though - a natural change of style would be expected. Think of V's style and sound from her Be Not Nobody days. Granted, it's not a drastic change, per se, but she has grown as an artist, and one can sense that through her lyrics and the general themes and attitude surrounding her records. Style-wise, she's also matured, so to answer your question simply, I guess it would really depend on how drastic the change would be and the motives behind it.

I think I would be upset, just as I am upset with Avril's change.  I wouldn't be angry, but I would be sad with a sense of loss.  With that said, I would never abandon her as a fan, just as I have never abandoned Avril.  I continue to support Avril (in hopes of a rediscovering of roots a la after Jewel's fourth album) as I would continue to support Vanessa, should she make the decision.

It depends on the degree of the change. I'd be glad if she does so if that would mean that the larger crowd would be able to listen to her and rediscover her. But I think that if she would have lost her genuine artistry in her because of succumbing to commercialism, that's when I'd get upset.

As long as she has that certain depth in her (something that not all of the musician in the industry have nowadays), I would love her. And maybe if she'd learn the perfect balance of commercialism and artistry, Like Michelle Branch and Sara Bareilles, I would be extremely happy.

I actually think her three albums are all quite different even though all her songs are piano based.

The one thing that has attracted me to Vanessa is that from looking at her gigs, you are getting a real music experience, its her and her piano, would hate to see her move away from that.

I am sure A Thousand Miles has allowed her to carry on making music that she wants to make, the only change in direction I could see is her producing an instrumental album.

I feel exactly the same way.

If she changed, I would feel like there's no more hope in the music industry for real artists. I'd still buy her albums though, because her music has really touched me and helped me through crises and I don't think I'd ever stop hoping it would come back. But I would be really upset and kinda feel betrayed. That sounds stupid - I don't even know her. But maybe betrayed by the music I came to trust, rather.

Depends on the change. Some changes are for better.

I, for example, would like very much she would compose more instrumental pieces, or at least add more instrumental pieces on her songs. But other than that, she's an excellent artist. Her lyrics have depth, she has a sweet voice, and I love her music as a whole. I wouldn't like her to change. I love her for a reason.

And regards her physical appearance, is OK for me. I mean, she's beautiful with that long dark hair. But I bet she would look beautiful too with any type of hair. It's up to her. I like her anyway  ;D

I hope she never changes (TOO much), though. 'cause she's beautiful (inside and out) as how she is right now.

And BTW, the dramatic change of Avril was really TOO much. I liked her in the Let Go and Under My Skin times... it's incredible the difference. I hope Vanessa NEVER changes that way.

Interesting question!
xx
But the truth is, you'll never need more than this

I actually think her music is pretty commercial, and could sell well if the right singles are released and properly promoted. For example, I think "Who's to Say", "San Francisco", "Home" and "The One" sound like top 40 hits to me. Of course, these days the top ten is dominated by all the Lady Gagas and Keshas out there, but if you check the top 40 there's always a few better, more organic songs on it. Vanessa could fit there.

Now, to answer the question, I wouldn't mind an image change (not that there's anything wrong with her current image), but a change in her sound would be a disappointment.

I really like her image and the way she dresses. very hippie or "boho shic."  She dresses the way I would want to dress if I had the figure I wanted and all the money in the world! I think she is one of those people who don't need to re invent themselves every couple years because she knows who she is and what she wants out of her career.  I think some people get mixed up on that, or they think that the need to re invent to stay current.

I'd say Marie Digby is a good example of this, but I would blame that more so on her label.

I don't think I'd be too upset if Vanessa changed her image or sound, as long as it's nothing too drastic. She's a beautiful girl, and I think she dresses appropriately. Wearing less clothes? As long as she knows the fine line between "wearing less clothes" and "slut".

I would be alright with her sound coming a bit more poppy. As long as she stays true to her amazing lyrics and amazing piano pieces, I'm happy.

As long as Vanessa never makes music like Kesha or any of the garbage out nowadays, I'm happy. I mean, she isn't horribly un-successful. H&T sold more than 500,000 copies. She just doesn't seem to have luck with labels, which is the biggest problem in my opinion. She doesn't need to dumb herself down and make songs about parties & sex and all that. But I mean, change can be good. Like the fellow fans say, it depends on the kind of change.
