Western Carolina University - 02.14.2011 (review)

Great concert tonight.  Drove up from Atlanta and definitely enjoyed the music.  The venue was a bit lacking... my wife had sprained her foot and we had to sit to the back and side and couldn't see but the top of V's head.  But the sound was great and well worth the trip.

The crowd was definitely one who wanted A Thousand Miles more than anything else, but this was the first time I'd heard many of the 4th album songs and fell in love with them instantly.

Vanessa messed up a few times, but I expected that.  She did it last time I'd seen her at Old Smith's Bar a few years ago too.  It makes her concerts unique and special.  And truthfully if she hadn't stopped playing to fix her own errors nobody would probably have realized she'd played badly.

I can't wait for the new album to be released.  It is going to be fantastic.

I find it funny, because honestly ATM is probably the song I like least of Vanessa's.  Perhaps it was just too overplayed when it came out, but I really didn't become a fan until her next single, and find her 2nd and 3rd albums so much better than the first as well.  But with a crowd like that, they would probably get upset if she left the stage without playing. 

It was certainly an interesting audience though... I was kinda surprised that a steady stream of folks thought the show was all over when she left the stage the first time and didn't even think there might be an encore.  If not for the fact that it finally gave me a decent view I might have said something to stop them.  hehe. 

I'm very happy someone got some video though.  Security told me to put my camera up and wouldn't let me take it in.  They wouldn't let someone in line near me go in with their smart phone either.  But despite actual pat-down searches at the door (a first for any concert for me - they hiring TSA agents?  *lol*) I still saw a number of phones and video's being made.

But as I said before, despite the venue and younger inexperienced crowd, it was a great show.  Vanessa was obviously rusty (and said so) but still sounds as great live as she does in recording.  She's one of the few artists who can make that claim in my experience.

Thanks for the reviews sarab and Danny R! I'm kind of disappointed that she didn't talk about a release date. But I wish she can do something like Radiohead recently. They announced their last album 5 days before its release, without any label, vinyls and digital sales only.

Still think ATM is an all time classic, and a song that has been very good to her thankfully, as it allows her to carry on making fantastic new songs. I hope she will always remain very very proud of the song.

But yes I really wish other people knew her for more than ATM.

Did she interact with the crowd during the gig like she always does?

I really don't get whats the point of not allowing cameras into events like concerts and stuff, really, what could even happen???

everyone in the front row was using their phones for video!  I just woke up from my "nap" I have to catch my flight in a few, but I wanted to hop back on and tell everyone I forgot to mention two very important things that happened to me!  While we were waiting, Vanessa had come out of the room they were eating in an into the grandroom to practice.  She was only a few feet away but I didn't notice her until it was too late! She's sneaky!  But we got to hear her warm up!  A little while later, Lord Victor made an appearance.  Some people were walking him into the grandroom. I said "Victor!" and everyone ooed and awwed over him but even the girls who knew more than just ATM didn't know who he was!  He's cuter in person too.
ATM is what turned me on to her only because I saw the video once and thought, hey I like that song and she plays the piano, let me look this girl up. and so the love affair began but I rarely listened to it as if in protest because I knew it was a popular song.  I'm glad it's been good to her as well, because as she has said, it allows her to write songs about vampires (Nashville performance).  As for the video, it's taking a long time to send out to Kulp and I had to go to sleep, so hopefully sometime today or tomorrow I can get it all sent to him so he can get it up for you guys...sorry just a little bit longer wait!

Offtopic but If you have problems sending the files to kulp via mail I recomend you both to use https://www.dropbox.com/ It's really easy, its like sharing a folder and it gives u 2GB of space

just tried, file to large I will see if cutting out her speech and uploading that separate helps, but that may take awhile I will also try the other option but my flight is going to board soon so it may not be until later!
