House of Seven Swords (new song 1/12/2013) lyrics discussion

(1/4) > >>

KULPDOGG:
we currently only have 2 versions of one instance, so here's a rough of what I can make out so far
PLEASE DO NOT COPY-PASTE THIS ANYWHERE YET
------------------

Strength and devotion come without warning
You know when you know what to do
No simple scheming, you should be sleeping
Sometimes you just can't think it through

And that's the way it is, love
Go whichever way you need to go
Nobody can tell you how to build
Your house of seven swords

That's the way it is, love
Together and yet still we're on our own
Nobody can tell us how to build
Our house of seven swords

Shamen won't tell you
The preacher will try to
And you take your time
Take a trip

Let your eyes see hidden things
Your heart beat like a drum
Your eyes see hidden things
Your heart beat like a drum

'Cause that's the way it is, love
Go whichever way you need to go
Nobody can tell us how to build
Our house of seven swords

That's the way it is, love
Together and yet still we're on our own
Nobody can tell us how to build
Our house of seven swords

Oo, oo, oo, ah

And that's the way it is, love
That's the way it is, love
Your house of seven swords
That's the way it is, love
Together and yet still we're on our own
Nobody can tell us how to build
Our house of seven swords

so yeah, these probably aren't all correct, so PLEASE DO NOT COPY-PASTE THIS ANYWHERE YET.
we don't want the internet filling up with incorrect lyrics.

I did spend a lot of time on this, but I know it can't be perfect yet

Thank you, and PLEASE give your input.

a song about a failing relationship?

cassiemoy:
your patient work is always appreciated! also, there are two recordings? or just two reported performances?

i suspect that since 7 swords is a tarot card, the lyric might be "build" instead of "fill," like building a house of cards.

KULPDOGG:
thanks for your input, I changed a bunch of stuff and I believe it's much more accurate now!  :)

and by 2 recordings I mean the two both by manny, one was on his phone

haha i love it when i catch someone working in real-time. super! i'm also trying to figure out if "strength and devotion come without warning" is actually "strength and devotion, gone without warning" ... and whether or not she alternates "that's the way it is" and "that's the way it ends." this is mostly because i suspect this song is about dishonesty. possibly infidelity (which i would love because one could trace evolution of that idea in comparison to "fools like me" and "fair-weather friends," from brave optimism to something more bittersweet).

a quick google tells me that 7 of swords in tarot when upright suggests "betrayal, deception, getting away with something, stealth" while reversed the card  suggests "mental challenges, breaking free."

i think this song may be about the journey to indifference, to the point where one only says tell her what you want to tell her, go ahead and take a trip, go whichever way you have to go. one can't tell someone else whether or not to be honest and no one can tell us whether or not we're breaking free from each other or whether or not to be honest with each other. and maybe recognizing the distance, and even keeping it (sleep without him, let your eyes see other things, let your heart feel the drum).

all this indebted to your interpretation of the lyrics and a long way of agreeing with the "failing relationship" theme. you're a champ!

[sobriquet]:
You should try writing your own songs sometimes, Kulp. You're really good with words.

I think the lyrics are pretty accurate. However, I doubt that she got all the lyrics right cause from experience, V often change some words later on as she finishes her songs.

As far as the theme goes, I don't think it is really about a relationship failing but rather a notion that despite being in a relationship, a person still remains an individual with the freedom and capacity to make decisions for himself. But still, this sort of freedom does not necessarily mean the end of a relationship. It is 'just the way it is,' as she sings in the chorus.

This song is really good. The message of the song reminds me of a Sharon Olds poem called 'Sex Without Love.' Read it.

And lastly, is it me or does the melody of the song is reminiscent of Florence and the Machine? But to whichever direction V is going , I can already feel that this is going to be good.
