Operator Lyrics
« on: July 22, 2015, 01:02:23 am »
Here's the lyrics. I put a question mark beside the lines where I'm not entirely sure.

I could be your operator.
I could bring you joy.
Something like a freedom fighter.
Guns are just for boys. (?)

I heard what you said,
You should say it again
Cause it's bold, bold.
It's getting late, darling,
Get a move on it.
We should go, go.

You should never tell your mother.
You could give it time.
I pour a drink, here have another
Cause this is gonna blow your mind.

Heard what you said
And I say what I mean,
We should go, go.
Pack up your things,
I don't care what you bring.
Leave your house for a home.

And you should call your little brother.
Tell him to be good.
And tell him that you really love him.
You don't but you should.

I heard what you said,
So don't say it again
Cause it's cold, cold.
It's getting late, darling,
Get a move on it.
We should go, go.

And I could be your moneymaker,
And you could be my song.
We'll worry about the others later.
We should gotta move on.
We should go, go.

Pack up your things,
I don't care what you bring.
Leave your house for a home.

Lol. This is I dunno... a very sexy song? I dunno... It gives me a very BDSM vibe but that's on the surface. I'm waiting for an epiphany with a much deeper meaning to blow my mind away.

Also--in the new YouTube version which sounds like the studio version she says

"Guns ain't just for boys".

And I'm with you Joey--it's very sexy and I too am waiting for a moment for me when it all clicks. Cannot stop listening

I take this song as the dark counterpart of Nothing Where Something Used To Be. This is a song that says 'do it, do it' but in the form of eloping. If NWSUTB is about that wistfulness and regret for not doing it, Operator find the persona at that moment where she faces the beloved, asking him/her to finally run away and "leave [his/her] house for a home."

EDIT: And for me, the closest song to this one is Private Radio. The piano (the sheet for which I will post in a few! :) ) and the "na na na na" reminds me of that song.

Floating on the sea, stars are watching me. Currents take me out, what will be will be.

That's funny... I don't really see it as a dark song at all! Like @Sobriquet, I see it as a 'story' about a couple wanting to leave together - maybe run away. Hence the "don't tell your mother" part. Maybe someone is feeling ambivalent about leaving, but the other wants to leave: "it's getting late, darling, get a move on it".

I really do love the "leave your house for a home" part as well. This song is amazing. Both the studio and the live version are fantastic. I can't even decided which one I like better!

I really would love to know what she means by "operator" though.

I looked up the definition of operator and two of the definitions caught my interest.

1. a person who acts in a specified, especially a manipulative, way:

or..

2. a person or company that engages in or runs a business or enterprise:

I wonder which meaning is for the song or both?

and then a freedom fighters definition is

a person who takes part in a violent struggle to achieve a political goal, especially in order to overthrow their government.

I dunno. I think what throws me off the most is her use of the expression "Moneymaker". It kind of reminds me of 'Fair Weather Friend' which I think is about Stephan and how he cheated on her but there is this vibe I get from FWF that she felt that Stephan was "using" her for her fame. It's in the "but you do it for the fame" line and in the basic expression "Fair Weather Friend" and she uses this expression of Moneymaker which reminds me of the same vibe.

The idea that the song is about eloping is interesting but why moneymaker? Why? And more importantly... Why 'Operator'?
