I think you can take it out if you want to, although it may not be as straightforward as clicking a button - i haven't looked at the source, but i think you could just comment that part out.
That said, i think it should stay - i like to know when someone has "changed their story."

you can't edit that part out...but it doesn't show up untill you have edited it like 3 times.

i'm pretty sure if you go to the bottom of viewtopic.php and comment out the "if" part and just use the "else" part, it won't show up anymore...although i don't have phpbb installed so i can't try it out.

That only happens when nobody has replied to your post yet
Then you can edit as many times as you want, and it won't show.
