There are a couple of theories.  I will try to stay away from details so as not to give anything major away.  One of them is that the movie happens exactly as we see it.  He does all of the things he appears to do and he does what he does because he wants to save the woman he loves, even if it means she never even knew him.

Personally, the theory I like best, is that the whole thing was a dream.  It was a vision of his life flashing before his eyes and all of the things that MIGHT have happened if he lived.

Either way, I still think it's a bad movie.

Am i confused or do you mean Donnie Darko?

I saw a programme on how it has achieved cult status already, it was released in 1998 (i think) but had little impact and now its back for re-release.

It's not "ABOUT" anything.  It's about a kid and what happens to him.  There doesn't seem to be a clear answer about what happens.  There is some question.  Read my previous post or just come up with whatever answer makes you happy.

And yes, Rosie, I think Donnie Marko is supposed to be Donnie Darko.

Basically, it is about a boy that is granted a chance to live in another, tangent universe. This means he's is an alternate reality, where he will not die of a plane engine falling into his room.
Frank, the bunnyrabbit, appears for him as a vision... not sensed by anyone else. Frank is there to tell Donnie when his reality will end... and Frank is the chosen person, because he is the one responsible for the main reason Donnie doesn't want to continue this life: the death of his girlfriend.
So, by returning, and starting all over again, Donnie is not tormented by these visions, and the medicine he gets prescribed to "stop" them. The difference is, he will never meet his future girlfriend, because in this reality, he won't make it..... sadly: he'll die from a plane engine, which ironically broke off the wing of a plane (in the previous reality) his mother was in...

Hard to follow, sorry :) Doesn't let itself be explained very easily. Like Mulholland Drive. Explain that one to me.
Watch it, Cris :)

Mulholland Drive HAS no explanation; it's a david lynch movie.

As for Donnie Darko, your explanation makes even LESS sense than the movie.  There is no alternate reality; where did you get this from?  The worm holes were supposed to be a means of TIME travel.  Not traveling between realities, but different TIMES.

While I am not saying I have the answer to what REALLY happened, I am 100% sure your explanation is wrong.

No.  Same reality, different times.

Are you saying that 1 o'clock today is a different reality as 2 o'clock today?
