has revealed that she suffered from an eating disorder when she was a teenage star.
The singer told Us Weekly she suffered from anorexia and bulimia during the ages of 14-18, eating only Melba toast, carrots and black coffee for months at a time.
Morissette said the eating disorders were encouraged by the music professionals running her career at that time. She was once called to a recording studio after being summoned to talk about redoing vocals. Once there, however, the person ambushed her with pressure to lose weight, saying, "You can't be successful if you're fat."
On another occasion, she went to dinner with someone she was working on a video with. Though he ordered a big pizza, "all I had was black coffee because he was like, 'You can't eat. And don't even put milk in [the coffee],'" Morissette said. Her meager diet caused her weight to jump up and down between 15 and 20 pounds, making her feel "constantly dizzy."
After one particularly noticeable weight loss, a friend intervened and Morissette began attending therapy and learning about eating disorders. She said "it has been a long process to un-program [my brain]," but she now considers herself healthy and maintains a more realistic workout schedule of twice a week instead of nine times.
Morissette is engaged to Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds. She is currently touring in support of her newest release, an acoustic version of 1995's breakthrough, "Jagged Little Pill."
