I was going to reply to a previous Avril thread, but the red writing suggested I start a new topic.  I know there are some Avril Fans out there, so I wanted to discuss!

I've listened to WTH only a few times and it's been stuck in my head for a day and half.  It has a great melody and beat and is very catchy.  With that said, I am very dissapointed in her.  The lyrics do not promote ideas that I agree with!  Especially with the context of her separation/divorce with Derek.  It's a very selfish, self-centered song that does not send a very good message.  I already pre ordered the CD, and I still think I would buy it if I hadn't in hopes that she may return to her roots!  Maybe some of the other songs will not be so lyrically disagreeable to me. 
I realize that she is young (she is only a year or so older than me) and she needs to sow her wild oats so to speak, but...it still doesn't sit well.  Any thoughts?

i really like the new avril. but a lot of things that were precious about her just faded away. lately, a lot of her songs are like "i don't care about anything, i just wanna have fun, you can say whatever you want, i don't care about anything", and i think life's not like that. but sometimes, when you're feeling sad, it's good to hear such a positive song. so, i'm not really disappointed with "what the hell".

Well, it's an empowering song for real. But it just bothers me that maybe she takes it way too much. Sounds Epicurean to me.

And though the song is really fun listening to with its beats and all, I am quite bothered at some parts of the song wherein she sounds like the chipmunks, especially in the "If you love me, If you hate me" part.

I miss the acoustic Avril, somehow. But maybe the rest of her upcoming album would be different?

I love acoustic Avril.  She really is a great singer with a great talent.  What does Epicurean mean?  I have a feeling it's a Shakespeare reference?

I see your point.  I guess to me though, it's not a very positive song because of the negativity she has towards a committed relationship and the me me me sentiment.  It is very upbeat tempo (catchy) and "I want to have fun" kind of song.  Could be empowering to someone who just got out of a relationship (and maybe someone who was cheated on, kind of a "get what you give" kind of thing..)  So with that said..it doesn't make me that mad anymore.  Thanks!  I knew I just needed to hear some other opinions on it.  It's still is most definately not my favorite Avril moment though.

That being said, not judging her character and the fact that she turned from country singer to rock chick to now an all out mainstream artist, the song is pretty catchy. The kind you find yourself humming to.

oh yes, I noticed those product placements!  Too obvious.  You considered her country to start? I thought she was pretty pop from the get go, but more of pop rock than pop pop.

I'm an Avril fan, I do think her best album was Let Go, really some fantastic songs on that album,I'm with You, Tomorrow, Anything But Ordinary etc.. some great melodies.

Her second album was also very good.  Not really sure about the new single, its not that catchy. Will be interested to see what the new album is like.

her album is supposed to be "completely different" from the best damn thing and everything she ever did release. Half the record is solely written by herself .. we'll see. I hope it really is. because i'm sick of songs like girfriend or even What the hell. She says it has a positive message, I'm not that sure about it. And the music video?? she wakes up next to a guy which she runs away from to go touch some muscles and then implicitly has sex with him at the end. Avril claims that she's shy and stuff, i don't see it. But I used to adore her music and if her new album really is raw and not pop at all and IF she really actually can write good songs on her own too, then I'll probably be as big a fan as I was when I was 12-13 If all we got is a the best damn thing part II I probably won't buy her next record.
