Nature vs. Nurture

personally, i think it's both. i don't think you can have one without the other. However i know that there are people who do disagree with that. I'm interested in what people think about it.

i said both..
by nurture, do you mean how we treat others and how we're treated?
and nature is just like born insticts right?

I say both but I tend to lean toward nurture.  I know of too many people who lean toward nature and try to use that as justification for all kinds of prejudices including race and such things.  So I'm the kind of person who aurgues the nurture side all the time just to rebutt them and provide some kind of balance to the backwards conversation.

Nurture... I believe anyone can become anything... In the right situation, under the right circumstances... a person can be changed into anything.  I also believe that that person can eventually fight against every natural instict they have.  Face it, there are skinny people in fat families, there are Democrats coming to the bible belt for Thanksgiving dinner, and there are very successful professionals that commit suicide or turn to crime... I think the Nature argument makes everyone feel good, but like most arguments that make people feel good, doesn't hold much water.

yeah really sis!  Stop being all smarter than me!

Nurture, because humans have learned culture.  Some would even argue that humans have no instincts at all and we learn everything through socialization and enculturation starting from birth.  Intuition can be attributed not to insticts but from learned behavior that's been subconsciously instilled.  When someone talks about "maternal instinct" it does not refer to a programmed resonse (which is what anomals do) but remembering what our mothers did for us when we were infant.  Our brains did not develop so we could visually remember infancy, but we still have that learned behavior.
It is a crime to kill a neighbor, and an act of heroism to kill an enemy.  But who is an enemy and who is a neighbor is purely a matter of social definition.  - E.R. Leach

woo hoo! i'm finally smarter at my sister at something!  :D j/k

Lucy - by nature i mean natural instincts that we're born with. Nurture is how we are raised by others (could be your parents, siblings, guardian...)

Nicole - lol i'm really into the whole psychology thing    we were supposed to do 250 on explaining nature and nurture and mine ended up over 1200....

anywhose, i think it's both because while we are all born with natural born instincts, those instincts can be changed and shaped (insert skinner/pavlov reference here). My example was an adopted child. That child could be naturally loud and outgoing, but its parents may not accept those qualities. So, the child suppresses those qualities to please its parents. Even though it is no longer loud and outgoing, those instincts are still there.

The answer has to be both..... here's why.

Your NATURE sets a percent chance for a person to be a specific way, but your nurture determines the actual choice.

It's like asking "what decides if a basketball goes in the hoop?  The distance of the shot or the person shooting the ball?"

The answer is both.  The person shooting the ball decides if he makes it or not, but the distance from the goal alters his chances.

I believe a very small percentage of it is nature. I honestly believe that people can be brought up to be whatever- you put them in a different situation and who knows what could happen.
