Heartfelt piano-based pop with the grace of the New York City Ballet.
The Skinny
Vanessa Carlton's artistic grace and refinement have a story behind them. Before her debut single, "A Thousand Miles," hit the radio charts and her video started racking up attention on TRL, the young Pennsylvania native had planned on becoming a professional ballerina. But when the strict regimen of the School of American Ballet in New York became frustrating, she turned to songwriting for solace. The graceful compositions she came up with captured the soul-searching of a young woman in transition. On 2002 debut album "Be Not Nobody" (Universal), her sweet voice and gentle approach to her instrument combine with grand orchestral build-ups and catchy choruses. Carlton is a breath of fresh air in the sexy, sweaty, dance-crazed kinder-jungle of MTV.
The Crowd
A mixed group with a shared passion for Alicia Keys' lush piano parts, Fiona Apple's introspective lyrics and the pop sensibility of Michele Branch.
