Who knows about GOOD T.Vs???
« on: September 16, 2004, 07:05:54 am »
I'm looking to buy a new large screen TV for a good friend of mine.

What's good?   HDTV?  Plasma?  Projection?  Flat Tube?

I'd really like to get something over 40" screen size.

Any suggestions as to what I should look for??

Heh. It's a TV that's supposed to take your peripheral vision into account somehow. That's all I know. It's probably just a marketing gimmick that makes no difference.

Hello...friend<3

haha....i'd buy all my friends TVs if I could afford it...

a friend of mine that I work with was diagnosed with cancer last January....before he got sick he was doing a lot of work on his house, including turning his attack into a huge game room....so what I plan to do is get everyone here at work to donate some money so we can get him a huge TV for the game room..... :D

It really depends how big and how much money you want to spend. I've been looking into getting a HDTV too recently.

many of the tvs over 40" is HDTV now anyway. As for plasma & LCD vs. projection, plasma & LCD are better than projection however it's WAY more expensive. For instance, the one I want is a Sony 61" projection and that's about $2200 whereas for the same size LCD it's $5500, and for plasma it's $20,000. Keep in mind, for the LCD you'd also need to buy a stand to put it on to keep it at eye level. The plasma can be hung on the wall. You would also have to pay a little more every month to your cable or satellite providers for HD programming.

You can get information about these that I'm looking at http://www.sonystyle.com

I'm looking to get something around 50"....in the range of $2500.....

I know that I'll have to get a stand for a projection TV, but I actually somehow need to take some measurments of the room to see how high the walls are (the ceiling slants down on two side)....

I've heard that Plasma TVs wear out faster than anything else....any truth to that?

I know you won't get a 50" plasma TV for $2500. I know plasma TVs tend to hum in high altitudes. I really don't know about the wear because let's face it I'll never have $20,000 to spend on a TV.
You'll probably be getting a projection for the price you're looking at and you don't need a stand for a projection (especially not for a Sony.) I know other brands are a little lower than Sony (which is why I buy Sony along with the fact that all I'll buy is Sony because I prefer their picture brightness, color, and durability) but you won't need a stand for 50" projection. You would need a stand for a LCD but those are probably outside your price range anyway.

If you don't want a Sony, I like the Philips and Mitsubishi after Sony but it's personal preference really. I suggest you spend a few hours at Circuit City or Good Guys to decide what you like. I don't like Best Buy because they tend not to have the higher end models.
