Oh my lord, I just listened to Kimya's cover of White Houses, and the begining of ATM, those covers were absolutely appaling, I feel sick to my stomach. It was like she took a machete cut them (the songs) up, drenched them in gasoline, lit them on fire, trampled them to death, and still had the nerve to play them. Those covers were absolutely dispicable, I don't care if she is a musician in her own right. That was possible the worse cover song I have ever heard. It was disrespectful, I was listening to it and thinking, okay...now I have reasons to be pissed off at the world. It was completly shameful of her to do those songs with such sloppiness, she sounded drunk and stoned, and when she messed up, she just laughed it off-like, haha, opps I messed up the song...oh well! God! Now I am pissed off, I can't beleive anyone would let her completely ruin two very beautiful songs. *sigh* I'm never listening to Kimya Dawson again-that's fo' sure. You can't take two wonderful songs by a respectable musician and just ruin them, that's a crime. Kimya, I'm suing you!! So watch out!
Couldn't agree more!
I'm a little disheartened to hear this here... I'm a big fan of Kimya. She's an amazing person, and you can't possibly judge that recording because you don't understand what circumstances it was recorded under. I'm not positive, but I'm wondering if that was the same recording that the person next to me made when I saw her.
I saw her playing in someone's living room at a house party.
Kimya's music style is completely and utterly different than Vanessa's. Kimya is completely and utterly different than Vanessa. However Kimya also holds a great amount of my respect. She essentially travels the country, staying on the couches of friends and fans alike, playing at small venues, living rooms and backyards. Her album was recorded in bedrooms, kitchens, etc. She doesn't want the tour bus life with her music playing on corporate radio. She's a crazy hippie. Up until recently she had a green mohawk. She's fun and goofy and spastic and uninhibited... *sigh* I'm digressing.
I guess my big question is, who ever said that a cover has to stick to the same style as the original? Let's look at a few very successful covers in recent years. Alien Ant Farm's cover of "Smooth Criminal" was very different from Michael Jackson's original. Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is different from NIN's. But that doesn't make them bad. I could go on for awhile on this... but my point is that you don't have to like her cover, that's fine. Just like you don't have to like Anti-folk, which is the movement that Kimya, along with others, basically founded. But come on, show some respect.
And give Moving On a listen before you make your final decision on Kimya. Vanessa and Kimya's mom both provide backing vocals for it.
