IRRC, when she did the football thing and sang ATM, it was pre-recorded as well and there was a very VERY large discussion about it.  I believe for these large events they always do pre-recorded stuff due to a lacking when it comes to sound equipment or something... perhaps the inability to get the necessary vibration needed in that type of venue to have it not sound incredibly horrible.  I'll have to watch it again, but just another point for people to discuss =)

edit: i did venture over to look at the o-board thread and see that was mentioned as well now...

I didn't think it was sound recorded, but did anyone notice that during the song and while Amy Grant was singing "God Bless America" they both had ear pieces?

And Katia's right.  I remember her doing Ordinary Day on Thanksgiving at halftime and you could DEFINATELY tell that was recorded.  This one didn't sound like it though.

I liked the actual version though.

And I thought she looked hot--not fat.  You could tell that her and the cello player weren't ready when they announced her.  I think that's the main reason why the entire nation almost got a boob shot.

Was it OD she performed?  I could have sworn it was ATM with the entire band... or was that at the tennis thing?  :)  Vulture... VULTURE?! =)

anyway, they have ear pieces just to hear communication from the people coordinating the show... i.e. camera is on you, mic is on, we're ready... etc.  It's possible it *was* recorded prior and they used that to queue her when to begin singing.  Either way, that WAS her voice singing the song... if she did it before or performed it live, it was great.

*I* personally would prefer to have her record it prior, than have the sound be SHIT for a live performance :)

riiight =)

i don't think she is fat at all or even overweight.  I think perhaps the choice of tops was not the best (thinks we should ask David his opinion on the outfit) and I was concerned as everyone else was about the running ;)

at least it ended up being a great performance, it is one of the most difficult songs to sing and i was curious about how she would pull it off.  She doesn't have one of the largest vocal ranges but she kicked ass.

Next were the anthems. First up was Michael Buble, who performed a flawless "O Canada," followed by Vanessa Carlton's moving rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner." ( Carlton's performance: 56k | 300k)

The 21-year-old pop singer, named by Rolling Stone as one of the top 10 artists to watch in 2002, was a little nervous after running through her sound check earlier in the afternoon.

"I just hope I don't mess up," she said. "It's kind of nerve-wracking when you know everyone's listening and watching. But I'm excited. I don't think I've felt so patriotic in my life."

I would really like to see just any footage of this, even just caps because this famous top sounds rather amusing. I would be so so so grateful and i haven't really heard much of your national anthem but i know you need a really powerful voice to sing it- go nessa!

I've added the pre-game interview to www.vanessacarlton.info. Some quotes:

"I've never been so patriotic in my life!"

"I know how to play a baseball man!"

Asking the woman behind her: "What team do I like?"
Woman: "The Yankees."
Vanessa: "No, they're not from Pennsylvannia."
