anyway, i'll have to disagree with you on that one, b/c i HAVE to be familiar with a song in order to learn it more easily. but someone did say that if you listen to a person's music a lot, when it comes to composing something yourself, you're more likely to PLAY like that person.

You're still building bad habits.

You need to read and play what is on the page, not what you can hear in your ear. If you never master this PERFECTLY, you'll just end up like another one of those dime a dozen pianists who can't count rhythm fast enough and can't keep time. The ability to play by ear is indispensable. But not at the expense of good reading skills. Starting off playing by ear simply makes this so much harder. When you do want to go back and get technical prowess, you pretty much have to start from the beginning and unlearn EVERYTHING you taught yourself. Sure, it is easier to learn music this way. That doesn't mean it will give you the best results. It's a crutch.

Artistry is important. But, if you don't have everything else down, you're gonna have a muddled, unattractive, pile of music to deal with. What's worse is that so many people can't even hear how BAD they sound.....

Last fall? Is that another one of Vanessa's "demo" tracks?

I personally didn't find it hard to learn piano, but I'd been reading sheets since fifth grade (I played trumpet).

I think reading sheets is harder than actually playing.... I've been playing mostly by ear since I was about nine but only learning how to read music for a little over a year, and it's still hard for me.

but even to play by ear i'd need to learn the keys (or are they called chords?  i'm really not all that musically inclined   )

You need to learn both. I don't know how anyone could mix the two up.

Ordinary Day. It was the first I learned and I got it down quickly. The middle is sort of...icky...but yeah.

Afterglow was the first Vanessa song I really learned. It's pretty easy. Actually, I first learned the riff to A Thousand Miles, but that was a long time ago, and it was with Afterglow and White Houses more recently that I actually started playing well.

I learned Ordinary Day recently. I really like to play it, the chords are so inspirational. But yeah, that middle part sucks to me. The way the book does it isn't the way Vanessa does it I don't think. And I do it my own way, and it takes me too long to find the right keys...maybe I should write out the music.
